    1. Re: [FO] My copy of v 10 arrived -- for real
    2. I actually got mine today and got it installed. It didn't go as smoothly as v 9 did. That is, it was fine until I deleted 9, then no database. BUT--I did have a backup. Also, I wonder why the default directory still includes Parsons Technology in the path. That Frankly, I probably should warn all those still waiting that there are no major changes, still looks and feels the same. The help files for the new journal report are not too specific on how to use. The instructions for LDS support and the new capabilities are okay. I see that FO 10 will accommodate the changes made in Temple Ready for Windows. I am anxious to try the updating ordinances feature. I remember that I had wondered what Bruce could possibly offer in a program that is already so good. I guess I am glad it hasn't changed a lot. Bruce, you've got to give us some capabilites for inserting graphics files into the Journal Report. Maybe some neat graphics like trees and so on. (Forgive me if you have already done this, I haven't actually tried it yet.) If the journal works the way I think it is supposed to, I know I am going to want some illustrations, etc. I have wished for something along these lines before, but I was never too serious about it with the cheap printers I have had. However, I just got a great new printer, the Hewlett-Packard Office Jet G85. It scans, faxes, copies and prints. Pictures turn out really well. The reality of trying to publish a family book is that it is best done in black and white, but with machines like the G85 available relatively inexpensively, I am betting that print shop technology and prices will soon make it feasible to print out your manuscript with clip art and photos in color and using some of the attractive fonts now available, in color. So I think we are going to need that capability in our programs. (Well, I guess you can use whatever Font you have now, but not in color.) One problem I have is that I don't use one of the high-end word processors, so if I don't print the book from Family Origins, I don't get an index. So I do welcome this development of the family journal report. I am looking forward to experimenting with it. Also, I wanted to mention that I think it is worth upgrading the program, because the computer I am using now has Windows ME, and as far as I can see FO 10 works great with my new computer.

    3. Lou, One comment you made caught my attention.... It turns up several versions, for example, they are selling Wordperfect Office 2002 Pro for $379.95.... (that's the current version). However, Wordperfect Office 2000 standard works just fine, and it's only $8.00!!! (the difference between the "Pro" and "Standard" is basically "Pro" includes the database Paradox, which I don't use). I bought this and it works just fine in handling the output from FO; allows you to insert graphics, then create the index. Works great. The only better software deal I've found is FO upgrades. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/
