    3. When merging a long list of duplicates, I wish FO would create a log of those merged. Since it doesn't, I create my own with cut-and-paste, toggling between my word processor and FO. I take the merge-to name and record number and create a list so that I can go into these records and reconcile the duplicate facts. --Derick

    3. I do a similar thing in that I first choose "look for duplicates" and check every box on the "search criteria" screen, setting the date to zero. After it finishes it's search, I just close the window. Then I run a "duplicates" list. It will have a few more people than "Smart Merge" will merge on it's own, but not many. Norma

Heres another suggestion: Before you combine a gedcom file into your database that will require a lot of merging, first add a unique general note phrase to every individual in the gedcom file. You can do this with the little program called "addnote" that you can download from http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/ged.html After the gedcom file has been combined into your database, use the "find" feature and next button to find each instance of your note phrase in turn to see if that individual needs merging or his facts edited, and then delete the note phrase. When the note phrase can no longer be found, the job is complete. Wayne League
