I was wondering how FO users inter the Military Service information. I can't seem to get the wording to come out right. Yvonne
I, personally, like a user defined fact better than the standard fact for Military Service. The standard fact does not allow the use of the description field, which you can enable in a fact that you define yourself. When I do a place list, I don't like to see some of the things that I have imported with GEDCOMS, so I don't like to put anything but places in the place field. I have added "Enlisted" and "Discharged" I suppose I could add "Drafted" and/or "Conscripted" too. Just one way to do it: I added 1 day to the enlistment date for the military service start date so they would stay in sequence. Sentence structure: He Enlisted in the United States Air Force on Jan 17, 1955 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., South Dakota. He served in the military from Jan 18, 1955 to Nov 16, 1958 (leave the place field blank and add the list of places in the note, it seems to flow better, in my opinion.) He was discharged from the USAF on Nov 16, 1958 in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., CA. With RootsMagic you will have a few more options for arranging your sentence structure. Alfred D. Yvonne-- What works for me is to use the Military Fact then put the known details, which are usually skimpy and variable, into the Military Fact Note. It then will read: He (or she) served in the military. Edward was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry. A bit choppy, but one can then identify everyone with a military fact should that be needed. --Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: Yvonne To: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 8:23 PM Subject: [FO] Military Service Fact I was wondering how FO users inter the Military Service information.
