    3. Hi, Dennis, Keith, Jim and others : Thanks for advice. I was concerned because I notice that in printed forms, many have person #1 etc. is the same as person#.. in another chart and I wanted to be able to be intelligible to people who don't use computers at present (are there still those adventurous souls abunding ?) So what is the purpose of the record# in FO ? That is , is there any genealogical purpose to which it is put ? Does it appear on report forms ? Or is it a hidden behind the scenes thing ? And what is a Reference number in FO ? Are there any implications(does it show up unannounced anywhere or do you have to set it ?)Does it conflict with the person number ? Is there a correct way of entering individuals numerically ? I am not getting my info in orderly pieces, and I don't know if I should leave # spaces where I think someone ought to be . Thanks again for any further insights. Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "D. They have a numbering system on them like that to be able to keep the sheets of paper in the proper order. If all these folks could be printed out on one large piece of paper there would be no need for the tracking numbers because the whole thing could be in view at once. Since we have to "cut it up" into 8 1/2 by 11 inch "chunks" to print it the numbering system helps keep a bunch of small papers (the print-outs) in order. For instance, if you have four generations print on sheet number one and run out of room, the direct line has to be continued on the next sheet, or sheet number two. So, if a person is person number 8 on sheet number one, their name will be printed again as person number one on sheet number two, in order to continue their line. If you print a few cascading pedigee charts and lay them out on the floor, it becomes much clearer. The cascading feature can be turned on or off by going to "reports" then to "pedigree charts". You then get a screen giving you some options. On the left side is a box you can check that says "cascding charts", and in the center of the screen are some more options you can choose so the charts will print like you want. Jim
