Of the programs 98, 98SE, 2000 and ME, 2000 is the most stable although I don't find 98SE as unstable as most. Shortly after my son, an MSCP, argued that he had never had a failure with ME, he did. The beta of XP looks good and I'm waiting for the program (10/25?) and the first service release. I prefer 98SE to 2000 but, if I were you, I would consider 2000 for stability. It's probably a year or more to XPSR-1. Some of your 98 programs might not install on 2000 - Norton System Works is an example. If you can use 98, you can use 2000 but there are some differences. My advice? Listen to what everyone has to say, use the comments as a study guide, decide which you prefer and go with it - you'll be happier if the decision is yours in my opinion. Hugh

Many programs that run on Win95/98/Me platform will not run on the Win 2K platform. The biggest group is the games, but many application packages (that use graphics) will not work either. Add to this the lack of device drivers. There are several thousand components used by home users that are not functional due to a lack of a driver (the interface to the computer). This include devices of all catagories, not just the obsecure ones. Just visit your local computer store and read the software packages. It must say Windows 2000 to be compatible, not just "Windows 95 or better". As time goes on, more applications and device drivers become available for Windows 2000. This is an ongoing effort by the companies. It will not happen over night. The same will be true for Windows XP. Not everything will be there on day 1. Dick
My post was not very clear. I meant that "if she had the ability" to use 98 she would have the ability to use 2000. I agree with your analysis as I run both on swappable hard drives. I use Norton System Works 2001 with Windows 2000. No problem. I could not keep Windows 98 se running I get crash after crash and have never found the culprit. Windows 2000 seldom if ever crashes.
