Way back in 1993, before I had a Windows computer, I started using the DOS version of Family Origins. When I got Windows the next year, I upgraded to Family Origins 3.0 for Windows, and was pretty happy with it. When version 4 came out, I upgraded again... but I was so disappointed that I returned it and got my money back. I had several complaints, but the real clincher was what they did to the Source feature. In version 3.0, Sources were simple free-form text, much like Notes. And I had made hundreds of such source notes, all pretty much unique. But version 4.0 (and subsequent versions) tries to "manage" the sources, complicating the picture unnecessarily, in my view, and making my old free-form source notes very hard to maintain. And so, I'm still running version 3.0... not exactly happy with it anymore, because it does have many limitations (lack of outline report, no page numbers in registry report...) I have a version of FTM, but I always found it rather bloated. I sometimes download my database there to use some of it's features, but I still keep my "master" database of 15k individuals on FO 3. Long time ago, I suggested to Parsons that they have an option to use the older free-form source method, but heard nothing back from them. Anyone identify with my problem? Also I'm wondering, is there any other genealogy software out there that handles Source notes as simple free-form text? Raymond B. Howard
