I normally place a GEDCOM on most of my genealogy web pages to share with others, and I recently noticed something that I have never noticed before. After uploading the page last night, I tried to download my own GEDCOM using IE 5.5 (my default browser, if that matters) and got only the text version of the information to show up on my monitor, and not the dialog asking if you want to "save it to disk." And yet, when I try the same process using Netscape 4.77 (also installed, but rarely used), I can easily download the GEDCOM normally, and with the usual dialog asking where you want it saved. Is this a problem with the way I am doing the upload, or anything else I can correct? I have not downloaded a GEDCOM off the Internet in quite some time now, so I have no idea how long it as been like this, but I would love to hear from anyone who can help me correct the problem. If someone else wants to try it, following is the same URL I was using: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~decann/genealogy/brewer/ Maybe someone else can try it with Internet Explorer and see if it downloads normally, and can tell me what the problem is. It may well not be a FO problem, I just don't know, but I have not changed any settings (that I know of) in IE in a very long time. If it helps any, here is my computer information: IE 5.5 (default browser) Netscape 4.77 (rarely used) Windows 98 SE Family Origins 9.02 Pentium II 300? 64 MB of RAM 2.5 GB hard drive (0.5 unused) I am not sure this is a FO problem, so please respond privately unless you think the information might be of help to someone else. Woops! I gave you the wrong URL. The one in my original message has no GEDCOM on it, but the following one does. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~decann/genealogy/brewer_notes/ Thank you again for any help you can give me. I tried it with IE (I normally use Netscape) and it downloaded just fine but when I went to Netscape I got the text version. Course, I can go to File, Save and save out the text that is showing, but it did not download like it did with IE> Keith Thompson "David E. Cann" wrote: > > Woops! I gave you the wrong URL. This is because in your folder options, under file types, you have the gedcom or .ged file type set up with the "content type (MIME)" box showing it to be a text/plain file. To make your browser ask if you want to save it to disk instead of displaying it, edit the gedcom file type and delete the contents of that "content type (MIME)" box so that it is blank. Your browser will then ask about it because it won't know what to do with it. (That will not bother or change any associated action you may have for when you double click on a gedcom file in windows explorer). (There is nothing wrong with the way you have your gedcom file on your website.) Wayne League
