Jack, This was what Rand Putnam gave for information: 1. Follow surname only. All daughter's descendants will be deleted and the daughter's info will be moved under her parents. Her spouses and references to spouse's parents will be retained. 2. Renumber nondeleted descendants. Deleting nonsurname families leave holes in the numbering. This portion of the program will eliminate those holes. 3. Include a back reference to ancestor's given names (e.g., John Smith (Erastus, William)). You can also download this program (ANCESTOR) separately. 4. Convert endnotes to footnotes. You can also download this program (NOTECVT) separately. Several important comments here: 1. Unzip the DESCEND program to the directory where you normally create your descendent reports (c:\Program Files\Parsons Technology\Family Origins). 2. You can run DESCEND from DOS, Windows explorer, or from a shortcut, perhaps on the desktop. You can create a shortcut on the desktop by right clicking on DESCENT, scroll down to "Send To", scroll down to Desktop. 3. The descent report filename must follow the DOS naming convention (xxxxxxxx.rtf). It cannot be longer than 8 characters to the left of the "." and 3 characters to the right. 4. When you create your FO descendent report, you must turn on the "Include Sources" option. Otherwise the program will crash with that warning. 5. If you encounter any problems, please email me your descendent report with a description of the problem. 6. If you are not computer literate, DESCENT may not be a program for you. I suggest you get someone who is computer literate to help you set the program up or ignore this program completely. Rand Putnam I would be interested in the results.
