I think I may have figured it out. One way to get a number and a period is if you have a completely blank source in your source list. Go to the Lists menu, select Source manager and see what the top source is, the one that is highlighted as soon as you get there. Click on the edit source button and see if it isnt completely empty, maybe just a space character.
