For example, sometimes I change my mind and swap the to/from persons before the merge. I like Alfred's suggestion that if the from person disappears, place the focus on the to person. Or described more simply, simply always place the focus on the surviving person after the merge. However, I suspect that a problem with either of my suggestions is that it might get a duplicate search out of place. In any case, I agree that it is extremely irritating when it happens, and it seems to happen to me quite a bit.
