Another thought. I know we can drag and drop a database to another database and one of the choices is to choose spouses as well. But that only works with descendants. I really didn't want all the descendants. The only way I can figure to do this is by individual Families and that is not what I wanted. I have seen some programs that do this. Paul mentioned RootsMagic, but since nobody has really seen it, I will answer the questions for it. When publishing to a web page, you have several privacy options. You can have the persons name displayed, or just the word "Living". For facts (events), you can have them printed in full, or not at all, or just date, or just place, or just year. RootsMagic *never* makes up data of any kind. - Bruce http://www.RootsMagic.com
Is there a way to create a gedcom which contains all a person's ancestors which includes spouses of siblings. I would like to make a gedcom of approximately the same amount of information that would be produced in cascading Family Group Sheets for ancestors of an individual. I could not find it. The choices were just ancestors. Just ancestors and children, or collateral. I was pleased to see that all of my husband's collaterals did not end up on my gedcom (I'll do his later). >>I have a question about the program re: privacy of living individuals. If I have living individuals in my database, and were to publish a webpage using the program, how will the information of the "living" individuals be displayed, e.g. dates, etc. Will they be displayed or would I have to omit that information? FO optional book at p. 194 states you can privatize for the living. No death or burial date or less than 120 years old is treated as possibly living. Only the name without any other data will be listed. Privitizing is optional. If you are fairly sure of demise, any death fact even if you do not know the date or place will force treatment as a deceased person. I.E., you know great uncle John is dead some 20 years or died in the War, but you just do not know the date and place. >>Also, if a date field is left empty, does the program estimate a date and fill it in automatically? I have seen some programs that do this. Not generally, you may however add your own estimate or range. I generally use something like < est 1890s > or < 1870s/80s >, this is treated as textual malerial because of the addition of non numeric data. Program estimates I have seen in FTM are so broad as to be meaningless in my opinion. I generally use the rule of thumb convention that a child is 25 years younger than the father. As crude as that seems, when data are later acquired, it proves to be remarkably close. A 3rd possible program choice is the new RootsMagic by the Family Origins sogtware author due out this January. Pre Febrauary orders get a bargain price. I am hoping that someone can help me. I have Family Origins 6.0, and Windows 95. Recently we started having trouble with the computer and took it to the shop to be fixed. They ended up saying that they would have to re-format the hard drive. I had backed up my FO databases to a 3.5 floppy disk as part of the computer’s problem was that it would not communicate with the CD writer or the printer. After we got the computer back my husband re-installed FO along with the other software, but we have been unable to restore my databases into the program. He has been able to re-install some earlier back-ups but not the last ones. They are zip files and when the floppy is inserted in the tower it shows that both of the files are there, (one shows 546 KB, and the other 330 KB) but we have been unable to restore them into the program. My husband and son have tried everything that they can think of with no success. The way that I tried was to open a new database in FO, go into the file menu and click “Restore” It then asks “Backup to restore?” I selected 3.5 floppy. It shows the two databases that are on the floppy, I selected the first one and clicked on open. I get this error message. “DynaZip Unzip Error: Zip file structure invalid (Problem reading zip file)” I clicked OK and the next pop up says “ The file you selected does not contain a Family Origins backup” When I clicked OK on that one it returns me to my empty database. I have been backing up my databases frequently, and it appeared that I was doing it correctly, but now that I need the backup it is not available to me. There are many, many hours of work that will have to be re-done if I cannot get these files restored. I had heard that there was a FO list and I am hoping that someone can help me. I hope that I have explained it so that you can understand. You are my last hope! (c: Thank you. Marge Howes Battle Creek, MI

I know this is not what you are asking, but generally it is not wise to use social security numbers in one's database and reports, as these numbers can be used in identity theft. Perhaps there is no problem for people already dead, but I don't even use them for deceased individuals since sometimes the spouse numbers are almost identical with just a letter indicating they are collecting on the account of a deceased individual. Peggy, You said, "I have checked the define fact type and everything is unchecked"? If everything is unchecked then that would explain why the SSN is not showing up in the report. The Define Fact Type dialog box says "Use this fact in ..." Therefore, Family Group Sheet, Books, etc. must be checkmarked in order for that fact type to show up in reports. I guess I have answered my own question. I went to the list and scanned down to "Birth" on that list and found that enabling the birth information to show up was not checkmarked. I just had not paid attention to this feature, and I guess I am not absolutely familiar with all of the new features of version 10 yet. Dogonne. Sorry for the question, that was stumping me! This one baffles me. I have just spent the better part of this day trying to figure out why the "birth" information is not showing up in my printed book. When I go to write a report, on one single individual, the first thing that the sentence states is death information. I have gone to see if "birth" information was deleted from the printing setup, but I do not see that that has happened. I even tried to see if by adding the information to the "note" would cause the birth date to appear, it does, but then not immediately after the name of the person in the report is given. I would prefer to have it as the first source of information in a book or a report. I believe that it used to work correctly in my previous Family Origins programs, versions 4,5 and 7. With all of the strange things that have happened to my version 10, I am wondering if something was deleted to cause the birth information to be deleted when writing up a report. I would like to have this show up! in my book in a reasonable sequence, is there any way I can correct this problem? I have converted at least 3 machines from Win 98 to Xp. Strongly recommend it. Only incompatibilities noted were with old DOS programs. The increased stability is worth the cost. I have not had that old a version of FOWIN. Mine, one one machine is ver 10. I've never run ME but I've upgraded to XP from 2000. > If so, what was your experience? Works fine. > Is anyone running ver 8.03 with XP? FOW has proven stable on all versions of Windows.
