I vote to continue the Family Origins Users List. Some of us older people are on restricted/fixed incomes and cannot purchase the new RM as readily as others. We would greatly appreciate having help available which would not be the case if this site is discontinued. Thank you for the job you have been doing Alfred. I hope you will continue to help us with FOW. God Bless! Lew ><>
I've gotten a couple people to begin genealogy just in the past couple months by purchasing FOWIN10. I don't think anyone could go wrong as a beginner, especially those both new to genealogy and computers. Many people are not like some of us who look for the new version every year and continue to use one version over several times. Bruce, will you continue to sell FOWIN10 on your website as well as RootsMagic. When the current store of cds is gone, will that be the end? For awhile I plan to use both programs side by side. Also, is Genealogy.com discontinuing all the various genealogy programs it has the rights to. I keep reading on various genealogy lists of how several programs have been dropped and people are looking for a new one. On the Allegany NY discussion a week or so back, Family Origins was by far the most mentioned program as a replacement for those individuals old ones. Once RootsMagic is out, we can begin to steer people to it. Margaret Scheffler
Hi, As a veteran, I use the stock 'Military' fact but to keep from messing up my place file, I just put the inclusive dates in for service. Then in the fact notes, I have input my specific duty station. It reads ____ served in the military between 1951 and 1961. (I may have altered the wording to read 'served in the military') My notes are: 3 Dec 1951 Enlisted and was sworn in at the 7th Street Armory, Louisville Ky. Jesse, That varies by FTP program, and to be honest with you, I had to get some help myself to do the initial setup, but the only hard part is just that. Once installed and set up, the rest is simple. Specific instructions, though, will vary from one software or another and there is no way I can give you a general answer that will fit. David E. Bruce We know that no other commercially available program has the support of the developer like FOwin has had. We look forward to using the new and improved program Roots Magic. We (FormalSoft) cannot do the same thing with RootsMagic (even though we wrote Family Origins), since we do not have access to the list of registered Family Origins users (which was passed from Parsons Technology to Genealogy.com). So I am asking a favor <enter grovel mode>... I received the following in my emails today from Genealogy.com: Special Offer: Stay in Our Family As a Family Origins owner, you need to know of some changes. We have been licensing Family Origins technology from an outside developer who has chosen not to develop a new version of this product. Because of this decision, we regret that we will be unable to continue support of Family Origins products. Support for your Family Origins product will end June 30, 2003. Because we would like to keep you in the Genealogy.com family, we're offering you a special opportunity to stay with a product that will continue to be supported. To help make this transition easier, we would like to offer you Family Tree Maker 10 with a free video (a $14.99 value) that will make learning the features and benefits of this new software easy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "D Wells" <dwells@chisp.net> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 2:44 PM Subject: [FO] User Lists Question > Here are my observations of the subject. > > 1. At 03:09 PM 1/16/2003 -0600, you wrote: >Unless there is a contrary reason, I guess I would pick a date (soon) >and merge the lists. There is one very good contrary reason. Rootsweb does not merge lists. It has been asked for by many list administrators over the years and is always denied. In my opinion, let the FO list stay the way it is. There will always be users of FO. I know several people who at this point in time do not plan to change to RM. They are very happy with FO. This list is then a place for these people to get help. We just need to get to a point that FO questions are posted to only this list and RM questions are posted to only that list. Once we have RM in hand, I am sure we will all be full of questions and the RM list will then get to the business of RM :) Personally, I plan on staying on both lists. I often help out the above mentioned friends with FO, so it will be worth my while to stay. Rene'
I think you may jumping the gun a little. Let's assume the RM will follow closely the upgrade path that FOW did for so many years, annual upgrades. Pricing should be similar also, but that is only speculation. The upgrade process has been discussed before and goes something like this: 1st Quarter - Support for new release, preliminary planning for the next release, and some R&R time. 2nd Quarter - Finalize major details and features for the next release, and initial coding. 3rd Quarter - Finish coding and start in-house testing, and addition of some minor enhancements. Beta testing may start also. 4th Quarter - Beta testing, final coding, updates to book, and production of the released product. If time permits, some R&R. At this time, some items have already been planned for v2 because of the time constraints for the initial release. Only a few of them have been specifically mentioned in the user list. I personally have not had the opportunity to try RM and only know what has been discussed on the lists and what is on the Web site. Now, that's interesting. The last two or three years I have purchased direftly from formalsoft, but I certainly should be on any old lists Parsons had. We bought from them starting in the early 1990's. Not that I am complaining about missing this important Family Tree Maker promo <grin> but I will guess their mail went to an old, defunct email address. I think their lists for FO might not be quite as helpful as they think if they date back to the Parsons era. Bruce, consider the favor done - and we have definitely recommended the program to friends and family over the years. The name of the list contains the name of the program it is supposed to support. I do not have the time to monitor both lists and direct the mail to the proper list. Once You get your hands on a copy of the RootsMagic software, and start asking questions about it, it would get quite confusing trying to figure out which program you are asking about, if we were to use the same list for both. Answering questions on the Family Origins list is already bad enough when there are so many versions still in use and many questions do not mention the version number. I think that after the users who want to use RootsMagic get their copy and start using it, the FOW questions on the RootsMagic list will no longer be an issue. Those that want to stick with FOW will stay here on the FOW list and those that move to RM will probably unsubscribe. By the way, I have seen RootsMagic, and it is Magnificent! Alfred D. Eller http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adelr/ =====================================
My two cents: I believe both lists, FOW and RootsMagic, should continue as separate and individual lists. Many will continue to use FOW, even if they also purchase and use RM. Then some will continue to use FOW exclusively, and some will use both programs. To me it would be mixing Apples & Oranges. I vote to keep the lists unique to the programs.
