Perhaps RM will leave it open at the last person you are working on...this was a feature of UFT To change the root person in FO, click on options, then root person, and set the program to open with the person you select. It will remain on that same person until you change it again. The process has remained the same since at least version 6. 1. [FO] FOW 10 on a computer network
    2. Børge E. Torgersen
    3. I would like to introduce my students to genealogy and tried to install FOW 10 on the server of a classroom computer network. The installation went smoothly and I experienced no problem creating a new database. But when I tried to add an individual to the new database the following error messages appeared: Codebase error Error #: -20 Error #: 90602 Creating File file4create C:\programfiles\parsons technology\familyorigins\fowevlst.dbf This message was followed by: Codebase error Error #: -935 Error ": 94001 Null Input Parameter unexpected d4field After that the program shut down (fatal application exit). My understanding of the problem is that when adding information to a database the program creates a permanent or maybe temporary file (fowevlst.dbf) in the program files folder. But since this folder is located on the server, the program is denied access to the folder for network security reasons. Is it possible to make the program create that file in the default folder for the new database? The program will have unlimited access to that folder and no security problems will occur. I know that FOW was not constructed as a network application but I would very much like to be able to use it for educational puposes. Børge E. Torgersen, Norway

    3. Right click on the tree icon and click on Properties. Find the file name and note the extension. It should be .ged If so, save it to a folder on your computer. Open FOW, create a new database and then click on 'File' 'Gedcom' 'Import GEDCOM'. Find the file you saved and it should open in the new database for you. 3. The zipped file has to be unzipped first, using a program for that purpose. You should get a file of the form xxxx.ged. 3. Floreda, I am not sure what you mean by FAV (Family Archive Viewer possibly), but the icon with the tree appears to be a gedcom file from your description and perhaps the FAV program is trying to open it. Try the following: Open the FAMILY ORIGINS program Create a new database in FO (Click on File, new, etc.) With the new empty database open on the screen, Click on file, then gedcom, then import Navigate to the folder where your icon with the tree is located Click to import it into that new database Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- From: "Varick" <tallygators@earthlink.net> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 3:11 PM Subject: [FO] GEDCOM > I normally do not "do GEDCOM". A little-known fact: The majority of people in the 13 Colonies supported the King of England during the American Revolution! The more active supporters of the King (called Tories) were labled traitors and lost their properties. Many moved to Canada or back to England to avoid hotility to themselves and tehir families. Unfortunately, I can name a few other American (USA) groups who lost their property to the Federal government, the right to vote and practice their religion, even their freedom because of their beliefs -- AFTER the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were adopted. 3. If you're running Windows XP, there is an easy way to 'fix' things, XP has a beautiful 'restore' feature. Click on start, then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools to reach the System Restore tool. Pick the time you want to go back to [an hour or two before you had the problem - or a day or two or whatever]. It doesn't 'goof up' any of the work you may have done, will just go back to the time before the problem. Nothing will be deleted. Jocelyn in Ohio

    3. The database appears to have become corrupted due to your computer getting shut off during packing. I would try going into the directory with the data files and deleting the cdx (index) files. Once you do that the program may simply rebuild the indexes. If you cannot get FO to open, you may also need to delete the FOWIN.INI file from your WINDOWS subdirectory. If the above steps do not work, restore your backup and you should be fine. The reason the program reminds you to backup before packing is to help you get back to business if something happens during the packing process.
