    2. I have started to have a problem. After getting a person, then going to a sub area, like to his Note section and typing something there, the screen freezes up and then the mid section go into a white page like with the background of the report behind. The only way out is to close down the computer since the X will not take the command. Anyone else out there had this problem? Stafford-Ames Morse

Of the programs 98, 98SE, 2000 and ME, 2000 is the most stable although I don't find 98SE as unstable as most. Shortly after my son, an MSCP, argued that he had never had a failure with ME, he did. The beta of XP looks good and I'm waiting for the program (10/25?) and the first service release. I prefer 98SE to 2000 but, if I were you, I would consider 2000 for stability. It's probably a year or more to XPSR-1. Some of your 98 programs might not install on 2000 - Norton System Works is an example. If you can use 98, you can use 2000 but there are some differences. My advice? Listen to what everyone has to say, use the comments as a study guide, decide which you prefer and go with it - you'll be happier if the decision is yours in my opinion. Hugh

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. Hugh Sullivan" <sull@adelphia.net> "If you can use 98, you can use 2000 but there are some differences." Hugh - not quite correct. Many programs that run on Win95/98/Me platform will not run on the Win 2K platform. The biggest group is the games, but many application packages (that use graphics) will not work either. Add to this the lack of device drivers. There are several thousand components used by home users that are not functional due to a lack of a driver (the interface to the computer). This include devices of all catagories, not just the obsecure ones. Just visit your local computer store and read the software packages. It must say Windows 2000 to be compatible, not just "Windows 95 or better". As time goes on, more applications and device drivers become available for Windows 2000. This is an ongoing effort by the companies. It will not happen over night. The same will be true for Windows XP. Not everything will be there on day 1. Dick

    1. Re: [FO] Wish Item - Prepositions / Dates in books + enhancements
    2. Dear Jeff: I, too, would like to see that "He/She" taken completely out of the program. I don't know how many people have contacted me about my web page, asking if it was true that my father married the widow of my youngest half brother as his second wife. In the website it starts the next paragraph, after listing my half brothers and sisters, as "He then married Eduth Lavada Boyd". People reading this think that the last child of my father's first wife married my mother, instead of my father marrying my mother. Virginia

    1. [FO] Wish Item - Prepositions / Dates in books + enhancements
    2. Jeff
    3. Hi All Since I don't have much faith in my computerised data surviving me into future generations, my eventual aim is to produce a comprehensive book from that data. Therefore this is one feature I would like to see developed and enhanced. Below are some of my ideas. 1. I would like to see the "enable date and place" box split to allow separate selection of date and place fields. 2. In addition to being able to deselect the date from books, I would like the option to print the YEAR only. I enter full dates for every fact but this makes for very monotonous and repetitive reading in books. If this was incorporated then the "ON" 10 May 1959 would need to become "IN THE YEAR" when selected. 3. I would like to see the preposition "his/her" etc. box contain the option for "given name" This would make much more personal reading on some facts rather that HE SHE, especially on the death fact, e.g. "John died on 10 May 1959" 4. The ability to add photo's to places was a step forward, but I would like to be able to add notes to places also. This could be used to describe the exact location, give a brief history of a homestead or place, etc etc. When a place which contains a photo or description then appears in a book some sort of symbol should appear alongside pointing to the appendix. The appendix of the book can then show a photograph and give a description of those places appearing in the book which have attachments. The user should be able to select the layout of this appendix from a number of pre-defined templates. Happy hunting, and FO is still the best for me. Jeff

    3. If given the choice and you are a home user who plays games, I would choose to install Windows 98 2nd edition. Some computer experts have little good to say about ME. Windows 2000 is said to be extremely stable, but is not designed for many games, should you have ones you want to play. I had purchased ME at the time it was released, then never used it after I investigated Windows 98 vs. Windows ME. 3. This brings up something I've been concerned about. My understanding is that Microsoft support for Windows98 will end this year. So, Bruce, is FOW10 being still developed for Windows98, or do we all need to get our ducks in a row before August for a new Windows installation? Or do you anticipate that FOW10 will be the last version developed for Windows98, giving us another year to upgrade our Windows programs? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick Wells" <dwells@chisp.net> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 14, 2001 7:12 AM Subject: Re: [FO] FO 9.02 & Win2000 or Windows ME > Both versions of Windows are compatible with FOW. 3. Laura, If you have been using Win 98 then a new computer with Win ME pre installed would be for you. Issues with Win ME are found in the upgrades not with factory-installed software. 3. Both versions of Windows are compatible with FOW. The Win 2K (Workstation) costs more than Win Me, and has a few drawbacks due to its design when compared to Win Me for Home users. The choice is yours. If you have been using Win 98, then the logical path is Win Me. Similarly, if you have been using Win NT, then Win 2K is next. This summer, both versions of Windows start their phase outs. Microsoft is releasing the next generation of Windows, Windows XP. It is a combined version of Windows, rewritten without DOS. FOW should work without any issues, but I cannot verify that. 1. [FO] Smart Merge advice
    2. Patije
    3. How exactly does this work? I've not used it in my MASTER database...only in some of the small ones sent to me by cousins. Does EVERYTHING HAVE TO MATCH? What happens if the name and siblings are the same...but the birth date is missing? Or there are two children with same name and one died early? What if there are NO dates or places, but the parents and siblings all match? What if EVERYTHING matches except the name itself...one has a middle name the other doesn't? I am ready to add a 2000 name gedcom to my master database and there are probably 150 duplicates. Is it too dangerous to do a "smart merge" before I go through the ancestors which are thought to be duplicates...the new database has dates/places, middle names, and additional spouses, so I don't want to just delete them. Thanks for your advice! I appreciate it. Patije
