I am planning on purchasing the Family Origins ver. 9.0 and am wondering if this will include the 9.02 upgrade? If not, what do I do after it is installed? Also, I am using their trial version now and would like to save the info I have already entered and add when I install the program. Can I do this? Sonya
David, There is a tip on page 189 of "Getting the Most Out of Family Origins 4th Edition" that addresses this particular point. The example given is: Your photos are in C:\FOWIN\PHOTOS\ but you moved them all to D:\FAMILY ORIGINS\PICTURES\ All you need to do is globally search the multimedia filenames for C:\FOWIN\PHOTOS\ and replace it with D:\FAMILY ORIGINS\PICTURES\ FL Rose ----- Original Message ----- From: "David E. With version 10 due out probably sometime this summer, I am seriously thinking about installing it as a "new install" into a different directory than I have always had it up until now (C:\Program Files\Parsons Technology\Family Origins), most likely putting it into *\Program Files along with nearly every other application. My dilemma is this. . . . . I also have well over 400 photos also in the same directory, in a folder titled "Photos," and moving this to the same new location will sever the connection to them with the program. Since they will all be leaving the same directory and going to the same directory, is there any way of changing the link to the photos using "global search\replace," either with Family Origins or my Windows 98 SE? I sure do not want to have to change all 400+ photo links one at a time if I do not have to, but that is the only thing I can think of to do. If any of you "experts" out there ("Wayne," "Bruce," "Alfred") have any suggestions, I would sure welcome hearing from you. I have a bad habit of doing things, and then realizing I have "passed the point of no return" and have a mess to fix, so this time I am trying to think ahead a little bit before I go over the deep end. . . . . again. If it matters with anything, I currently have FO 9.02 running on Windows 98 SE. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. David MSgt David E. I recently installed FO Ver9, but don't know anything about a patch. Is there one? What is it for? Is it for all Ver9s? Do I need it? Where would I get it? The problem is not with backward and/or forward compatibility. The problem will be when Bruce will no longer be able to obtain development tools for a particular version and therefore be unable to develop a product for that version. Most of us remember when he announced to the list that anyone running 3.1 needed to upgrade Windows if they planned to buy the next version of FOWin because he was unable to obtain development tools for 3.1. So, to some extent, Microsoft WILL determine when FOWin users need to upgrade their systems. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MScheffler" <figaro@dreamscape.com> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 14, 2001 8:29 PM Subject: [FO] Future FO developments -- Which Windows version? > Windows versions are backward compatible, so that FO 10 when it is > released will most certainly run on Windows 95, 98, 2000 and the next > Windows XP. Margaret and Linda Thank you so much for your help with the changeover. I read through all the notes on the list that I had saved, backed up everything and installed Vers 9, then the patch and finally removed Vers 6. All is going smoothly but I really did my homework first! Margaret: >Windows versions are backward compatible, so that FO 10 when it is >released will most certainly run on Windows 95, 98, 2000 and the next >Windows XP Hugh: XP is built on the 2000 and NT models and they do not have absolute backward compatibility. I have the utmost faith in Bruce's ability to take care of his admirers regardless of their OS. Harrumph. >A word to the wise -- the fact that Microsoft may not support >Windows 98 anymore should make little difference to most of us. I have >never contacted Microsoft for support and I would guess most users have >not. That is a significant point and one that worries MS. New purchases and upgrades are not being purchased as often as in the past which hurts the bottom line. I could do with 98SE, Office and FO9.02 from now on, but I'll get XP and FO10 - probably not Office XP. Then again...... >Also, for most of us, it is prudent NOT to jump to the latest >Windows version when it is first released. New versions always have >lots of bugs when they are released. Good advice. XP seems very stable now but it seems to me that only the very skillful beta test new OSs. Bugs seem to show up most often when users with a wide range of skills start using the program. >Incidentally, the new Windows will only be able to be installed on >one computer, unlike where with other upgrades, one could use the same >cd on all their computers. This is a problem I think MS will have to work on (and they are). Can you imagine service techs at major corporations having a breakdown which requires the reinstallation of the OS? Thousands of techs will be calling MS several times a day to get the reinstall key. Can you imagine Chase Manhattan Bank holding up the world's transactions while a tech is on hold with MS for 3 days getting the key? And I have 3 computers. I may wind up using 3 OSs, or I might not buy XP at all. Just think if millions refused to buy XP because of that one drawback. Then there are always URLs where one can download a program to try for 25 years to determine whether he wants to buy. Bruce, is August the month I need to be in KY instead of AL so I can get FO10 quickly? Bruce? Where did you go, Bruce? Hugh
Since similar problems have happened to a number of us, doing different types of editing, I am still convinced that it is the old Windows memory problem. With continual going back and forth between various screens and Windows sometimes not releasing the memory, over time there is a problem. Now I know what the blank spot looks like. It is the same size as the "Place List" frame. About the time I started to use the Place Listing to find people (being the fastest way to find a person if you know the town and your file is 115,000) the problem started thereafter so it may have to do with this part of the programing. >From the place name listing, I find the year and person and then use the # next to them and go back to the name listing and go to # box and type it in, then that person comes up for review. This is my substitute to my old PAF who had the years after the Person Listing which I loved and miss. Windows versions are backward compatible, so that FO 10 when it is released will most certainly run on Windows 95, 98, 2000 and the next Windows XP. It will be quite awhile before a large amount of software that runs beginning with XP will be available. A word to the wise -- the fact that Microsoft may not support Windows 98 anymore should make little difference to most of us. I have never contacted Microsoft for support and I would guess most users have not. Your local computer shop will continue to be helpful. I plan to continue to use Windows 98SE for a number of months after the new release. Also, for most of us, it is prudent NOT to jump to the latest Windows version when it is first released. New versions always have lots of bugs when they are released. I prefer to have someone other than myself troubleshoot. I was so... glad when I read about Windows ME that I had not immediately installed the upgrade I purchased. Also, when a new version comes out, one needs time for hardware manufacturers to update their drivers. You may install the new operating system to discover your printer, scanner, other hardware do not work properly. Incidentally, the new Windows will only be able to be installed on one computer, unlike where with other upgrades, one could use the same cd on all their computers. We should all look forward to the next FO release, planning to install it on our Windows 95/98/2000 series operating systems. Hi list, Thanks to you all for your great responses. I'm glad to see that FO will work on so many Window's products. I think I will have Win 98 put on my new computer for the time being. Then, I won't have to worry about my printer and scanner or other applications working. Laura <I have the opportunity to get a new computer and can have Windows 2000 or Windows ME put on it. Can I use FO 9.02 with one or both of these Windows programs or would it be best to have Win 98 installed again. Laura>
Since you have version 9.02, I am in agreement with Allan Plucinik. I suspect that there is a shortage of resources somewhere. Does this happen when you have only Family Origins open, or when have several other programs open in the background? There are programs for monitoring your system resources, one comes with Windows 98, (I don't remember if it was in 95 or not) In 98 it should be found by going to the Start menu, Programs, Accessories, System tools and finally "Resource Meter". This sounds like an "infamous" problem experienced by many Internet Explorer 5.0 users. If you are using this version...the only thing offered up, so far, is to try "repairing" IE5. Didn't solve it for me...but doesn't hurt to try: 1. Goto Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs 2. Highlight <Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0> in list of programs and click on <Remove> button. 3. A dialog window will open and one of the choices is <Repair Internet Explorer>. This checks/refreshes the IE files and then allows you to finish and exit. Hope it helps you !!! -=Kevin=- In a message dated Mon, 14 May 2001 6:03:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time, MorseSA@aol.com writes: << I have started to have a problem. Stafford, I suspect Alfred is asking you to verify your version of FO in order to determine whether you have applied the latest patch. With versions 7, 8, and 9 there are patches to apply. Your symptoms look suspiciously like some problems that surfaced in FO9 shortly after it was released. If you have applied the patch then your version should show as 9.0.2. If not, then go to www.formalsoft.com and download the patch. If you're on version 7 or 8, then apply their respective patches. Or, you may just have a memory issue with Windows. Try not to have too many programs running all at once. Reboot your PC occasionally to recapture lost memory after you've been opening and closing a lot of programs or doing a lot of data entry/modification for several hours. When it comes to Windows, "new" versions always have lots of bugs when they are ready for retirement! Norma
What version of Family Origins are you running? --While in Family Origins, go to the help menu and select "About Family Origins" and it should tell you exactly what version you have. You get no error message? You say that the only way out is to shut down the computer. Have you tried the three finger salute? Press [CTRL] - [ALT] - [DEL] all at the same time and you will get a list of programs running, you might be able to select Family Origins and then the "End Task" button and not have to close down entirely. It is always such a pain rebooting when you have to "pull the plug" on the whole system. Speaking of which, What operating system are you using. It usually tells you what operating system is when it boots. Or you can try the "Start" button, select help and it should tell you. You can try going to: http://www.familyorigins.com/support/knowbase.html and see what you can find.
