    3. DON'T BE TAKEN IN BY HOAXES! The following is an article copied from the virus encyclopedia found at http://www.cai.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/ SULFNBK.EXE Hoax The text on this page is part of a hoax and is not a legitimate warning or offer. We present it here to help you identify any hoax messages that you receive. Please note that hoaxes often have several variations in circulation, so you may receive a hoax message that is similar, but not identical to the message below. This particular hoax may also appear in Spanish. "I found a virus in my computer that was sent to me by somebody. The virus will activate itself on the 1st of JUNE and according to McaFee web site will destroy every single file in the hard drive. If you have the virus it should be in your computer by now. The file name is SULFNBK.EXE. You can find it in the Windows explorer and then eliminate the file. (Do not forget to eliminate it from the Trash as well!)

    3. People sure know how to play on our emotions don't they. We're all geared up for virus' and fear grips us when we hear of one because we know that McAfee and Norton simply cannot be on top of all of them on the onset. And so, that's how people, who are just as vicious as a virus generator, make us panic and do things we wouldn't normally do. What is so unfortunate is that people who really care about people and want to warn others of impending danger all of a sudden become part of the hoax and usually unknowingly. We need to get more educated, remain calm, investigate, and then move forward. Perhaps many of those who informed us this was a hoax could develop a list of good places to go to make that determination and then periodically publish it on the mailing list so all new subscribers are also educated. Further, now that many innocent people have wiped out a perfectly good (and in many cases probably needed) program is there someone out there who can tell them where t! o get the program and how to install it - besides just saying go to a recovery disk or call Microsoft. Withholding of knowledge is not power, knowledge gained and shared is; after all, that is why we're on a mailing list ! Mike Peterson

    3. You also have the option of including or excluding the detail in a source. If you exclude the detail, then the pages of source will cut down to a reasonable number. I use the full detail for an exchange or where the person would be interested in the full information. For my family, who is more interested in the extra that I have placed in notes to help flesh out the genealogy, I leave off the detail, but still include the source. You will not get the page after page then of repeated sources for each reference. Keith Thompson TBremersr@aol.com wrote: > > You should source your data as Margaret explains. 1. [FO] Source setups
    2. You should source your data as Margaret explains. To come back at a later time, and try to do it THEN, that's a BIG problem. I can vouch for that. One thing you MUST keep in mind when you do source your info, whatever info you set up in the Source Manager itself will print out in your footnote listing at the rear of the books (if you so choose). When you reuse the same source, you will NOT reprint the source words again. It will just use the same footnote number for all further times you use the same source. (This cuts down on LONG footnote pages.) Once you use a source CITATION DETAILS Field for ANY purpose, the rule changes. You no longer get one full printout of the source and further usage of it referencing back to the original. EACH DETAILED source footnote prints out in its entirety again, again, and again; as many times as you differentiate each by using the DETAIL field. NOW, your book, when you print footnotes, becomes VERY big. The footnote pages expand greatly. For my ancestors, I want all the data I can to print out in the books so, for them, I overlook this problem. For other folks. I try to setup and use a very generic source in the Source Manager, thus using the repetitive, no-print feature. I STILL have footnote pages that are too large. When I run this type of book thru Rand's program to bring footnotes to the pages where they are refereed to, in some cases, the footnotes take up MORE space on the page than the data itself. Oh well. To each his/her own. 2. Frank L. Rose
    3. GEDX has several options which includes the conversion of FTW GEDCOM to FO GEDCOM. It is fairly well documented and has tutorials. So far it has done a reasonable conversion of FTW GEDCOMs. For example, I recently imported a FTW GEDCOM with over 10000 names. The LST file had nearly 800 pages of "errors". After using GEDX there was only one error message in the LST file. It's not a panacea but can be helpful. FL Rose ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. Wife: Polly . . . etc. >1 SEX M The 2 SOUR level & tag refers to the 1 NAME above it. In FO you cannot reference a source to a name. It must be referenced to the individual at the 0 level and then it will become a general source for that individual. Also, the DATA and TEXT tags in the above configuration are unacceptable to FO. The easiest way to change the above gedcom lines so that FO will import them is like this: 0 @I1674@ INDI 1 NAME John W. /Smith/ 1 SOUR @S48028@ 2 PAGE Sheet 9-A & 9-B 3 CONT Smith, John W. age 25, farmer. Wife: Polly . . . etc. 1 SEX M Note that all the text on the 3 CONT line must be all in one line in the gedcom file, extending as far right as it takes and not wrapped to the next lines as it was in your email message. If you do wrap the text, each new line thus formed must begin with 4 CONC FO will now import the source as a general source for John W. Smith and the text will all be in the citation detail. Getting the text to go into the source text field from the gedcom would be a bit more complicated. After you import it as above and in FO, move the text into the source text field via the source manager, you can have FO make a one person gedcom file and see how it constructs the gedcom file if you would like to learn how to do that. 3. Although I try to use standard bibliographical practice for book resource citations, there is a lot of room for personal preferences with Family Origins. For verbal information from a live family member, I would likely use their name in a format such as: Smith, Mary Jane -- for notes from the person, I would likely use the name plus something like personal notes, personal correspondence in the citation details section. For some sources including documents and certificates, I tend to use generic sources such as birth certificate, death certificate, tombstone, cemetery records, 1850 federal census, etc. Then I give the necessary details such as date, certificate #, location, etc. in the citation details section of the source screen. The important issue is to cite each source in such a manner so that if at all possible, you or someone else can locate it with minimal difficulty at a later date. The exception might be family members, where you might just use the person's name. If you have questions about how various types of source entries print out in a report, try printing some sample reports and look at the format of what prints out. You should try for clarity and consistency. You might want to look at some professional genealogies and see how they present the sources as well as looking at some standard books giving pointers on citing sources. 3. I am not too sure of this, but the "4 TEXT --- " line looks to be way too long, there should be either a CONT or CONC flag every 80 or so characters (Not sure of the number). Otherwise I can find all the flags listed in a GEDCOM exported by Family Origins. At or near the beginning of the GEDCOM the program and version number that exported it, should be found. Is it Indented? FTM seems to like to indent things to make them hard for other people to use. You could always look up the GEDCOM EXPLORER program and see what it can do for you. http://www.gedx.com/gedx/default.html Good luck, Alfred ========= ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. 3. The subject is very complex. Messing with gedcom files can get you in big kimshee very fast unless you know what you are doing. Suffice to say it caused by the two genealogy programs are not using compatible standards. Norma ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. 3. I don't have a lot of experience working with GEDCOM files. I have downloaded a cousin's file and imported it into a new database. The remaining list file is 270kb and has lots of entries that didn't import. Below is an example of what was in the GEDCOM and following that is an extract from the .LST file. Can someone explain to me what it was that didn't import and why it did not? Can I work with the file to change it so this source information will import? If so, how do I go about it? Thanks... 3. Darci, What dpi do you use to scan the images? And does anyone have any suggested places to look for help in building web pages that have links and photos? I am still such a newbie at putting web pages together. Thanks, Diann P.

    3. I sure do need some help! I am trying to import an LDS Gedcom file into a new "Family Origin" database. I have tried to follow the instructions in the Family Origins Handbook, "Importing A Gedcom File" I am unable to read the LDS Gedcom file - it is not in English text. Can someone walk me thru the procedure - I am really new to this. Most appreciative Greta in Lake Placid, Florida. Greta in Lake Placid, Fl mailto:gretasgarden@htn.net

    3. Hi Greta -- It sounds like this is NOT a gedcom file. If it's a gedcom, you can open it with MS Word, WordPad, NotePad or any other text editor. What is the extension on the end of the filename (e.g. .dat, .doc, .txt, .fow, etc.)? -- Happy Hunting!! -- Paul Houston, TX, USA ICQ #73314929 Researching: VA - WHITE,LIPSCOMB,HILL,JOHNSON,SAUNDERS, TALBOT,TATE,EVANS NC - SMITH, BOSWELL, RHODES, CAPEHART,MORRIS, MARSHE, BRITT,SHAW View my American Ancestry at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paulrsmith **************** FREE Credit Card Referral Program. Thanks in advance, > > -- Matt Matt, An excellent genealogical citation guide is Elizabeth Shown Mills' book, "Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian". I strongly recommend that you purchase the book if you're just getting started, or even if you're not. I refer to my copy constantly. It has detailed citation format examples for all the major record types, and some not so major. Although nothing is covered that would fit your notes specifically, I would probably go with using the ERA Personal Papers that you mentioned, and modify the citation for either a personal letter or an unpublished manuscript that are given in the book. These two come closer to the category of your grandmother's notes than anything else. Peggy
