    3. I am having trouble entering one of my databases, and I sure could use some help, please. I am running 7.1 They are as follows: (three of them) I get these messages; No. 1 Codebase Errors Error#: -60 Error# 90615 Open File file4open C:\MyDocuments\FamilyOriginsDatabases\Williamm.CDX (OK) No. 2 Codebase Error Error#: -935 Error#: 94001 Null Input Parameter Unexpected d4field (OK) No. 3 Program Error Exiting Application (CLOSE) Is there anyway to save this database? It is one that I have made myself, no part of it is imported. I will appreciate any and all the help I can get. Thanks to all for a find program. Mary Braden

    3. From Windows Explorer, you can delete all of the files that end with CDX. When you open that database again, you will see a box that says "re-indexing". When it is done, you will have your database back. (P.S. if you are using Win 98, the CDX files will go to the re-cycle bin, which always makes me more comfortable about deleteing things.) Norma

    3. Evelyn, Are you sure you are not confusing a Descendant Chart with a Descendant Book? I don't see any way in FO9 to number the generations in a Descendant Chart (maybe someone else on the list knows of a way that I am missing). If you click on the BOOKS tab in the Create A Report area you have a choice of 4 types of Descendant Books. I know at least one of them numbers the generations. Thank you all for your > explanations. ============== I guess that I could never grasp the logic of what it is that you are trying to do, or what a "non-computer read chart" is, but I'm glad that you have figured it out. If you are talking about manually putting a number on each individual, you might consider putting it as a prefix or a suffix (the places where you would put "Dr.", or the place where you would put "Jr."), because if you put different numbers in the same field with the surname they will likely come up as different surnames because of the different "spelling" (number) you gave each one. 3. I've added an imported gedcom into a database, that went well. One source I used was identical to both databases. I use the "merge source" to combine the exact same sources together into one but still shows as a double listing. I changed each to just New York State Men without any other data, publisher, year, etc., and it still doesn't combine. Anything I can change when trying this? Thank you. Darci

They have a numbering system on them like that to be able to keep the sheets of paper in the proper order. If all these folks could be printed out on one large piece of paper there would be no need for the tracking numbers because the whole thing could be in view at once. Since we have to "cut it up" into 8 1/2 by 11 inch "chunks" to print it the numbering system helps keep a bunch of small papers (the print-outs) in order. For instance, if you have four generations print on sheet number one and run out of room, the direct line has to be continued on the next sheet, or sheet number two. So, if a person is person number 8 on sheet number one, their name will be printed again as person number one on sheet number two, in order to continue their line. If you print a few cascading pedigee charts and lay them out on the floor, it becomes much clearer. The cascading feature can be turned on or off by going to "reports" then to "pedigree charts". You then get a screen giving you some options. On the left side is a box you can check that says "cascding charts", and in the center of the screen are some more options you can choose so the charts will print like you want. Jim

    3. The record numbers for all individuals is computer generated at the time of entry. First come first numbered. I have heard that you can export yourself to a new database, thus creating Record number 1 for yourself, then import all the others (you can bring your self in again, just make sure that you merge into record 1 and not the other way around. If you are a database programmer, it would be possible to change numbers, but the next time you export a gedcom and re-import it, the record numbers might change again depending on how many and where in the database, you deleted or merged individuals. Allan: I have been getting some new data from Ellisisland database, but I often have the husband without the wife, etc., because they haven't travelled on the same ship. I woud want husband and wife and children to have close numbers (just sentimental I guess) but I often don't find the missing spouse for a few days or weeks. I guess I could create a xxx record until I fill in the person. Does that make sense to you ? Now I see that you are asking about a record number and not about a record itself. I never pay any attention to record numbers. In my main database I set myself up as the "root person" and let FO do all the numbering automatically. That's done by going to "options", then "root person", and then picking yourself from the list. In other databases I use for reference, I set the person I connect with as the root person. Jim

MHKalman wrote: > Hi, all: > > I am using FO 7.01. > Does anyone know a way of changing the record of an individual after that i. > has been added to the DB ? ========== Marilyn, Perhaps I misunderstand you, but if you need to change some "fact" about a person (birth date, death date, etc.), you highlight the person on your screen, do a right click with your mouse and that will open a menu that says "Edit Individual". Click on Edit Individual and a screen will open with all the individual's information on it. Highlight what you want to change and do another right click with your mouse. The will bring up a menu with "Edit Fact" on it. Click on "Edit Fact" and a screen will come up where you can change the information you want to change.. After making the change, click the "OK" button. Look to see if the change you wanted was made on the "Edit Individual" screen. If so, click the OK button again and you're done. Jim

I was concerned because I notice that in printed forms, many have person #1 etc. is the same as person#.. in another chart and I wanted to be able to be intelligible to people who don't use computers at present (are there still those adventurous souls abunding ?) So what is the purpose of the record# in FO ? That is , is there any genealogical purpose to which it is put ? Does it appear on report forms ? Or is it a hidden behind the scenes thing ? And what is a Reference number in FO ? Are there any implications(does it show up unannounced anywhere or do you have to set it ?)Does it conflict with the person number ? Is there a correct way of entering individuals numerically ? I am not getting my info in orderly pieces, and I don't know if I should leave # spaces where I think someone ought to be .
