    3. What does this have to do with Family Origins? I am not scolding, it's just that Family Origins has no facility for OCR. That has to be done with a dedicated OCR program. I think that some will read characters from a picture file, but the one I have has to have control of the scanner as it works. Once you get the text into a file, clean it up with a good word processor, THEN copy it into a Family Origins note or source. The type of document has quite a bit to do with the accuracy of the OCR too. I have found some OLD newspaper clippings are so yellowed that it is faster, even for me, to type it than it is to try correcting the OCR generated file. A good, clean, well spaced copy works the best. If the copy is small, old, crowded and faded, forgedaboudit. Good Luck, Alfred ========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darci" <djohn@netnet.net> > I want to scan an obituary into the database but instead of image, I'm > trying to convert to text using OCR and keep getting jumbled words. I don't think it has been decided just why some people have the problem and some don't, but a patch has been developed for the program that pretty well stops it. I have one key on my keyboard programmed to print this message: Some of the problems with Family Origins 9.0 are addressed in a program patch. This patch upgrades Family Origins 9.0 to 9.02, and is a free download of about 1MB found at: http://formalsoft.com/files.htm This will not eliminate all problems, nothing can, I know that I have blown things by jumping from one thing to another too quickly. Other times, something goes wrong that I have no Idea what caused it. The only thing anyone can do is to keep a good, up to date backup so that if something does go wrong, it will not be a complete disaster. A rotating backup works well, using about three disks backup to #1 one time, #2 the next time, and #3 the next. then start over with #1. Three is not a magic number, but it is unlikely that you would backup bad data more than once or twice without noticing it. It is a good idea to “Restore” a backup to a fresh folder once in a while, just to be sure that you are really getting a backup, I have heard of people who tried restoring after a crash, only to discover that their backup disks were blank. If you have a long list to input at one time, it isn’t a bad idea to backup your data to the hard drive every half hour or so, just in case something goes wrong. It takes very little time, and is good insurance. Each subsequent backup will overwrite the previous one unless you put it in another folder, so it doesn’t use up too much disk space. Good Luck, Alfred

    3. It all depends on the quality of the scanner, the document, and the OCR program. If you are using the OCR program that came with your scanner, it probably doesn't work very well. You can get a better one for around $100, or a great one for about $1000. AABBY Fine Reader, Omni Page, and Text Bridge Pro are three that I have used and all work pretty well. For me and my arthritic hands, any are an improvement over typing. Norma

Me thinks the list server needs some sort of artificial intelligence or predictive capabilities about which taglines to attach. 3. You need to have the program that will format the CD in the packet mode. This is different than a standard CD burn. It usually takes about a half hour or more to format the CDRW, but then you can use it just as you would any other removable media. To me, this is longer that I care to spend formatting a disk. I have tried it, but had difficulty in recovering the data. With that, I went to straight cd burns, either CDR or CDRW. As CDR disks are as low as $.05 ea in larger quantities (200), its easier to burn the disk and later use it for ornaments or bird chasers <G>. The one problem about the packet mode, is that it is quite often particular to the drive and packet software that you used initially. If you have to change anything, then you may not be able to recover. The safest and most readable in the CD methods is a burn from the hard drive to a CDR in a standard ISO format. You should be able to read this in almost any CD Rom drive. Keith Paul Divan wrote: > > Can someone tell me how to backup my family data on a CD Rewrite Program. I have FO Version 9.2. Thank you. 3. I haven't seen Windows ME, but I suspect that the Find function is still in the START menu. Select that and look for files named "*.CDX" without the quotation marks on your hard drive. That should all the "CDX" files on the drive. There should be several with the first seven letters of your database, in this case "William" one other letter and the extension of "CDX". You can select these right in the find window and delete them. The other CDX files that are found will be of your two other databases, no need to bother them as long as those databases are working. (There could also be some other program that uses the extension of CDX, so be careful to only mark the "WILLIAMx.CDX" files for deletion Then try again, what Norma said. 3. Does Windows ME have a "find" tool on the Windows start menu? If so, search your entire hard disk for "*.cdx" that is Splat dot cdx. I never used version 7, but I don't remember anyone mentioning it being any different from others so it should have cdx files. Especially since your error message mentions one of them as being bad. 3. I worked with Mary on this problem for a bit but other problems with her system forced us to work on other areas. For clarification, this is only one error. The three errors Mary lists occur sequentially until FOW closes automatically. If you re-open FOW and attempt to open the same database often enough, eventually it will open. We backed up all databases and other files and then completely rebuilt her system from the ground up using Gateway's disks. We installed FOW and restored all databases from backups. The problem persisted; three databases are fine but the fourth gives the error and shuts down FOW. Mary: Repeatedly attempt to open the bad database until you get it to open. Click 'File' 'Pack [compress] database'. A window will open asking if you want to do a backup first. Just say no <G>. Then, do a backup of that database to a different place c:\test or c:\1 would be fine. Then close the database and try reopening it several times to see if the Pack has solved the problem. If not, import the backup you just created and try opening that several times. -- Happy Hunting!! -- Paul Houston, TX, USA ICQ #73314929 Researching: VA - WHITE,LIPSCOMB,HILL,JOHNSON,SAUNDERS, TALBOT,TATE,EVANS NC - SMITH, BOSWELL, RHODES, CAPEHART,MORRIS, MARSHE, BRITT,SHAW View my American Ancestry at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paulrsmith **************** FREE Credit Card Referral Program. 2. This may be off topic, but this is my dilemma. Someone who is not at all computer literate sent an FTW file to me, someone who is only mildly computer literate. The problem is that it was sent with FTW version 8. I do own a version 7.5 which I DO NOT use as I am a Family Origins program user. Is there any way I can get this converted so that I might view it either in my FO program or my FTW program? I would write back and ask her to GEDCOM the file, but I had already tried to walk her through that and that didn't work. Anyone have any ideas how I can read this file? Carol
