I think that the reports of the death of the GEDCOM standard have been grossly exaggerated. If one part of the genealogy community, Even a part as large as the LDS Church, tries to change the direction everyone else is going now, they will have a mighty big job on their hands. It will take an extended period of time to accomplish anything as big as changing an old standard like GEDCOM. -------------------------- from the pages of the Webopedia: http://www.webopedia.com/ "XML" Short for Extensible Markup Language, a specification developed by the W3C. XML is a pared-down version of SGML, designed especially for Web documents. It allows designers to create their own customized tags, enabling the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations. ----------------- But, if after a few years, everyone has grown comfortable with a new way of doing things, the old way will just fade away and no one will even notice that it isn't there anymore. (When was it that you last saw a 5Œ" floppy disk in a store) It is nearly that bad with the 3œ" floppies now that every program is so large they have to be distributed on CDs. I would Imagine that Bruce will add support for XL transfers to Family Origins when and If it looks like it will become a standard. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. Most of it is hidden from the end user like us so that we have no idea what language is used to write a program. I just read in the latest Ancestry Magazine that the LDS Church has selected XML for future software programs. They plan to create a new file format to replace GEDCOM. It said that XML would allow more programming freedom and better data sharing. It said that GEDCOM would not be improved any further. Does anyone know about XML? If they don't update the standard any more, the others will have to change. The LDS is/was the originator of the gedcom standard, I believe. Mary, It sounds as if you are having problems with more than one program, so maybe you need to step back a bit. You may not have a hard drive in a condition to which you can restore programs successfully. How did you redo your hard drive? A clean format and reinstall of all programs from Windows first and then the programs from their ORIGINAL cds? A restore disk from your computer manufacturer? What operating system? Are you sure the hard drive is ok? If you have a manufacturer's restore cd, I would start all over again with the reformat process. Then install all your programs from original program cds, NOT programs from backups. Leave your virus program to last. If you tried to reinstall programs from information you backed up from the hard drive with problems, you may just have carried on the problems. Let us know exactly what you did, and some of us may be able to guide you through the next steps. Hello All: Thanks, to "All" for trying to help with my problem. But something is not working, are I just don't understand what all to do. But my problem is worse now, then in the first writing. All databases seem to now be having the "codebase" errors come up. I might say that we backed up all on a CD-RW on a formatted cd. Have gone to see if it is checked for "read only" but it is unchecked. (Remember I had to erase all the hard drive, and reload it.) And that when I started having so much trouble. Also it won''t let me reload (import) my address book, or some important e-mails. If you feel like helping me on this subject. Please step by step. Since I am a novice. Mary Braden PS: When I tried to find the CDX files, by typing in the "find" or "search" it gave my a entire page of the boxes, like the databases has ,I think I had about 78 of them. I am scared to delete them, for fear I am losing all my info. So you see I have a mess.-------- mb ----- Original Message ----- From: "mbraden" <maybe@pdq.net> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 10:49 PM Subject: [FO] Codebase Errors > I am having trouble entering one of my databases, and I sure could use some help, please. Linda, With the patch to 9.02 I have found this an extremely stable program as used on my desktop and laptop computers. On the list, you hear mostly about people who have problems and not about the many of us who rarely have one. Through the FO versions I have used (3 through 9), I have found Family Origins one of the most stable programs I have used over the years. I do not ever remember having a corrupt database -- did once create a corrupt gedcom. Considering the number of hours I spend on genealogy per week, I consider this an excellent record and program. Thanks Alfred for your help. I will have to experiment with "new facts" and unchecking in Family Origins. When you used "forgedaboutit" it reminded me of Joey Tribianti using that phrase on a "Friends" episode.
The last two messages I sent to the list I got a reply form Evelyn Barefoot with a virus attached. If you have recently posted to the list, you might have received the same badtrans virus attachment, DO NOT OPEN IT, DELETE IT. I have unsubscribed her from the list until she gets it cleaned up. so it should stop quite soon. the Family-Origins-Users-Mailing list administrator Alfred Eller
Let me add that I recently pulled the Grandma III collection into FO. That collection contains over 400,000 names in one tree. In the notes that the California Mennonite Historical Society sent with the CD they comment that the only program besides Brother's Keeper, that will handle that size of database is Family Origins. A very nice complement to FO. And FO looks a lot friendlier than BK. No, you cannot tag notes so that part of them stays private, but you can make a new fact, call it Private or Confidential or whatever you want, and uncheck all the places for it to be used so that it never prints out anywhere. Put all your Private notes in that facts notes and no one but you will ever see them. I dont know how Moxilla is set up, but with Outlook Express, I have buttons for new mail, reply and reply to all. If I want to send an original message to the list, I use the new mail button, then, I have to enter an address ( <family-origins-users-l@rootsweb.com> ), which I have in my address book, and an appropriate subject line. Another way would be to Reply to all, and erase the personal address and change the subject line. New York? Hummm, I went around the block so long ago that I forgot where it came from, but its funny, I have never been as far East as Chicago. I've found that just scanning the document as a gif or jpg file, not OCR, works just as well. You can adjust the brightness to clean it up once scanned or adjust the contrast to make the print darker. -- Janelle Holmes Wildair Kennels Dripping Springs, TX
Is there any characters like ! or ~ that you can tag notes in Family Origins to keep part of that note from printing in books? I can reply to messages by hitting the "Reply to all" button. How do I start a new message or thread as I have see it called? "New message to all" button? I guess I am still a rookie at rootsweb "mailing lists". I like your New York accent Alfred. Henry
Darci, Many times, using the same computer and scanner but wildly different quality copies of Obits. And the results vary as wildly as the quality of the obit originals. Sometimes you can get nearly every word recognized..... and sometimes it's impossible to get more than about half recognized. General "rules" I follow Scan at 600 dpi Try scanning in "line art mode" and in "grayscale". Sometimes grayscale gives better results, sometimes not. If working from newsprint (what I usually have) and it's yellowed a lot, it sometimes helps to make a Xerox copy of the obit, and then scan that, instead of scanning the original newsprint. If the original shows some print on the "back" side bleeding through, this can really mess up your OCR. Try scanning with a black sheet of paper backing up your original.
