    1. [FO] Compatibility with LDS program?
    2. Linda Smith
    3. I don't want to stir a hornet's nest. I just 'thought' the programmers know what one another are doing--guess I'm a little naive!! Previous posts to the list mentioned the new XML gedcom. I think a lot of things will be improving, changing, upgrading and we will have to roll with the punches for a while. Then we'll get comfortable and things will 'improve' again. Seems like a never ending learning curve--but I guess that won't hurt too many of us. Linda "Friends are God's way of taking care of us."

    3. Welcome to the list, Jack. Sorry it took you so long to find us. Unfortunately, the wish period for Ver. 10 is over but it's never too soon for next year's list so go right ahead and post. I don't know the official total, Alfred should have that number and post it for you, but you should know that Bruce Buzbee, the programs author, monitors this list closely so this is your best shot at getting your ideas implemented. -- Happy Hunting!! -- Paul Houston, TX, USA ICQ #73314929 Researching: VA - WHITE,LIPSCOMB,HILL,JOHNSON,SAUNDERS, TALBOT,TATE,EVANS NC - SMITH, BOSWELL, RHODES, CAPEHART,MORRIS, MARSHE, BRITT,SHAW View my American Ancestry at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paulrsmith **************** FREE Credit Card Referral Program. 3. A few months ago I bragged that we had passed the 800 subscriber mark. Bruce noted that the unofficial wish list had been stagnant for some time so he started an official one. It comes once in a while, along with nine other notes, as a trailer to these messages. TO wit: ==== FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Mailing List ==== The "Family Origins® Wish List" http://formalsoft.com/wishlist.htm ??? FAQ ??? -- http://www.graabek.com/fow/fofaq.html ------------ The addresses for the archives of this list are in the trailers too. One is browsable and the other is searchable (I haven't checked in a long time to see if the search for the browsable list is working yet.) Welcome aboard, Family-Origins-Users-Mailing list administrator Alfred Eller P.S. note the trailer I left on your original message. ========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack W. Here's an idle comment: If you frequently use different windows color schemes or desktop themes, then if you set the FO screen color to the standard gray background then the FO colors will change along with the windows or desktop scheme colors that you use (as also will the colors of the other programs that you use). 1. [FO] Okla. Bombing
    2. mbraden
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2001 1:12 PM Subject: Fw: OKC Bombing - a forwarded message i received this from a friend today...a powerful message...so here 'tis, for your consideration: Donna worked the bombing site. She recently received an excerpt of Timothy McVeigh's book, and this is her response: Dear Friends, I will not forward the excerpt from the book that has been written by two reporters and a couple of shrinks about Tim McVeigh. It was sent to me by someone I respect, and I have checked it out to be sure that the quote was accurate. And, it was... I fully expected to read this book. I wanted to know a lot of things. And, I believe that the book is an accurate account of what Tim McVeigh has said. I wanted to know why he picked Oklahoma City. I wanted to know if he implicated anyone else. I wanted to know if he took responsibility. But, I won't read the book. After reading the excerpt, I know that it doesn't matter. It won't change a thing. I have to address this. So, buckle up, because here goes. And, before I start this tirade, I want to say that what follows I know to be fact, because I saw it... My husband set up a tent across the street from the building, right next to Little Caesar's pizza, who also set up a tent and made pizzas on the spot. Jim's company donated all the coffee and tea and equipment, and we funneled the water and cokes and other supplies that were donated through that little blue tent and to the rescuers, and the workers. So, we saw what happened, and we know. My husband, whose heart is so soft he swerves to miss a turtle on the highway, stood in that carnage, unflinching, on a knee the size of a basketball and did everything he could. This, to me, is the measure of a man. Tim McVeigh says, and this is the only quote from the man you'll get from me; "It was my choice and my control to hit that building when it was full.... I understand what they felt in Oklahoma City . I have no sympathy for them." First of all, I don't think Tim McVeigh feels at all, and second, no one in Oklahoma City asked for any sympathy of any kind. Least of all Tim McVeigh's. While he was cowering away from the scene, with ear plugs in his ears, the people of my town were running toward the mess he had created. There were not just 168 bodies to be recovered. There were almost 1000 injured people to be triaged and helped. That was done. And, it was done with a speed and an accuracy that stunned the people who came later to help us. Our construction companies had cranes in place within the first hour. Our hardware companies turned their shelves over to the effort. Vets came to help with the rescue animals. Doctors came and worked along side construction workers and lay people. Engineers kept that wreck standing until all but three bodies were recovered. And no matter what the conspiracy people say, that was a damned miracle. When the wind blew, even a little, that building swayed and groaned so loud, it was audible for blocks. When other States sent rescue units to help us, my town fed them, clothed them, held their heads when they vomited at the carnage and comforted them when they cried. Being close to that building wasn't easy during those 19 days. It was bloody, it stank, and it was dangerous. And, in spite of this, we had trouble getting people to stand down and take a rest. Thank you, New York Urban, and Phoenix, and Fairfax, and Dade County, and Denver, and Everyone else who came. You showed up on our door step like a good neighbor, with your equipment, and tears in your eyes, and we will forever be in your debt. You are heroes to the person, and always in my prayers. Saint Michael's heart beats in you all. Buildings around the site stood wide open. Their foundations sprung to the extent that their doors wouldn't lock. But, locking the doors wouldn't have mattered anyway, since the windows were all gone... There was not one incident of looting. Not one. And, Joe Q. American did everything else. By midnight, that first day, we had an ample supply of blood for all. I saw people lined up around the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Hundreds of people lined up, waiting for hours, to donate their blood. Businessmen in suits talked casually to homeless people who felt the blast and came. And, the rescuers didn't just exist on dry sandwiches. Oh no. Little Cesear's, the Outback, Subway, the local Barbecue and Steak houses, Hooter's, Taco Bell, Sonic, and others too numerous to mention, some from Texas and Kansas fed everyone well. And for free. This wasn't easy. Food had to be labled as to date, origin & time of arrival, and kept clean and cold in a very inhospitable environment. And, this was done. Everyone at the site was sick, but it was never because of the food. While we tended to the needs of the rescuers, the FBI, the ATF, FEMA, and the Oklahoma City Police Department worked around us, and under our feet, sometimes with tweezers, and plastic bags, picking up minute pieces of the barrels that held the explosives, and pieces a big as the axle of the Ryder Rental truck. They were professionals all, and sensitive to our feelings. When the authors wanted to donate a portion of the proceeds from the book to our Memorial, the Memorial committee quietly said "no thank you." I am so glad, and so proud of them. No sympathy, or no money needed here. We'll handle it, thank you. PLEASE, DON'T BUY THE BOOK... Send the $20 to the Memorial, or to the Red Cross, or to the Education fund for the children of the victims, or to the Oklahoma City Fire Department, or the Phoenix Fire Department, or Dade County, or to Feed the Children. This is not about Tim McVeigh. It's about the human spirit. And, it's here, and it thrives, and it asks no sympathy. Love to All, Donna Prather >From An OKC Fireman: I hope that Tuesday when Tim McVeigh's book hits the newsstands, that NO ONE WILL BUY THIS BOOK... This man is being given to much publicity and shows NO REMORSE for the HORRIBLE CRIME that he committed! He has admitted he is guilty. He refers to the 19 precious children he murdered as "collateral Damage" and his only regret is that "their deaths proved to be a public relations nightmare that undercut his cause". OF ALL THE GALL!!!! The pictures of these children and the adults will always be in our minds... 168 innocent people died that day. This man murdered them ... please do not make him some sort of hero... He wants part of the proceeds to go to the Oklahoma City Memorial ... The OKC MEMORIAL Declined the money...... Send the Money to the Memorial ...... but PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK....!!!!!! Thank you.... and remember the precious children... so innocent.... Please pass this on to everyone you know, so this monster does not get any more publicity... That's all he wants, is the publicity. Paul Hinchey,Captain Guymon Fire Dept. Guymon,OK

I have been a Family Origins owner/user since version 1.0 and have welcomed and enjoyed every upgrade since then. I am currently using version 9.02, which I believe is the latest. Earlier today I visited the "unofficial Wish List" web page and found that it hasn't been maintained for over two years. What's with that? I have some enhancements for version 10.0 that I would like to propose but do not know how to go about presenting them. Is this the correct forum for doing that? 3. Hi Kathy -- From FOW's Help file: You can customize your screen display by choosing your favorite colors and fonts. To set your screen font and color, 1. Choose Screen Font and Color from the Options menu, or click your right mouse button on the main screen when the mouse pointer is not pointing at a person on the screen. 2. Click the radio button preceding your choice of background color. You can use the standard gray background, choose a custom color by clicking Choose color, or use a textured background such as denim or lace by clicking the down arrow at the end of the field and choosing the background you want. If your computer displays in 256 colors or less, you cannot choose a textured background, and the option is dimmed. 3. Click the Choose Font button to open the standard Windows font dialog where you can select the font that will display on your screen. Click OK when you have made your selections. 1. [FO] More FO Reminiscing
    2. Howard Ford
    3. Alfred, you sparked some reflection in me so I did a little looking back and made a few discovers. Here is a little history. (I must have too much time too.) I purchased a copy of Family Origins v-5 and for the first time really became interested in searching for my family. If I remember correctly my wife gave it to me for Christmas 1996. Not being too computer wise nor software wise I struggled with considerable confusion trying to learn how to use it. I was able to do most things but there were always those little things that I did not know how to do that blocked me from progressing. I sooooo wished I had someone to ask how to solve my dilemmas. I thought there must be others that are having the same experiences and that there must be some who know the answers. On March 11 1997 I wrote Larry Stephen, at the University of Indiana about starting the list. I knew almost nothing about lists and very little about the internet. I had been on the internet only a few weeks at that time. I just looked in my archives and found the email Larry returned to me. We proceeded to set up the list and I think the following heading was probably the first post. It was my welcome message to me. It was different then. First it was not Rootsweb but the Maiser system at the University of Indiana and Larry Stephen that made it possible for a bunch of genealogy list to come into existence. Another difference is my address was different. Later the Masier system crashed because of spammers and the lists were picked up by Rootsweb. I want bore you with the entire Welcome Message. Take a look. Subject: Subscription information Date: Thu, 3 Apr 97 16:19:03 GMT-0500 From: Mail Server <Maiser@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu> To: hlf@rain.org WELCOME to FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS LIST (snipped) Alfred, you have shown me what tired me out. I read every message then, all 5000 or so a year. I did my best to keep the list on topic. Lists were new to a lot of us and a number of people wanted to talk about a little of everything. Not wanting the list to deteriorate resulting in a massive number of emails resulting in people unsubscribing, I worked hard trying to keep it confined to FO as the welcome message stated. I still believe the list got off to a good start and that start has been instrumental in having a productive list. Some of you gave me a lot of static and I finally decided to give it up. Others of you, who are still on the list, provided a lot of valuable information for the subscribers. I just looked at some of the post made in the first month and recognize some of you are still on the list. By April 14, 1997 (a little less than 2 weeks of existence) we had 72 subscribers. Bruce is the best thing that every happened to Family Origins but this list, in my opinion, is the second best thing for Family Origins. (Bruce is the best thing that has happened to genealogy software, period.) Enough of this reminiscing. Have a great day and keep it on topic :). I was going to sign off here but I just have to share this little "funny" with you. When I put the little smiley face above I remember something that happened early on. A certain person, who may remember it when he reads it now, posted something that was off topic and then put a smiley face. At that time I hardly knew what a colon and a parenthesis meant when they were written together. I did not see it and got on his case for the post and he used the list to "tell me off," another off topic post. We have sure come a long way and a LOT of emails have gone under the bridge. Have a great day Howard Ford, the original list owner.

    3. Wayne Jones wrote: > If they don't update the standard any more, the others will have to change. > The LDS is/was the originator of the gedcom standard, I believe. =========== Wayne, While the interest in family research has exploded among the general public in recent years, many of the "standards" have been adapted from the original system developed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the core doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ is the performance of proxy ordinances for one's deceased family members in an LDS Temple. In an effort to computerize the system several years ago, the Church wrote a DOS based genealogy software program (Personal Ancestral File) for it's members to use, and developed the GEDCOM as a means whereby members could make a floppy disk on their PAF software at home and send it by mail to the nearest LDS Temple. The information would then be loaded into the computer at the Temple. I understand that it had a few bugs in it, but it sure beat the old hand-written paper family group sheets that had been used up to that time. (Although some were neatly typed, everyone didn't own a typewriter). As interest in computerizing and transferring family research information became "popular" among the general public, commercial software makers saw a new market for their products in genealogy software. Each begin to adopt the system already set up and working by the LDS Church, and the Church willingly cooperated in sharing it's system. The GEDCOM standard works fine for what it was developed for in the LDS Church, but new technology replaces old. How many of us still use 5 1/4 inch floppy disks, or, in many cases, have even seen one? If the LDS Church decides to go with a better way of transferring computer files, I'm sure that it will work with those commercial software developers who may be affected, as it has done in the past. At the same time, the LDS Church is not in the software business, and it will develop and use the best system that will meet the needs of it's members. I have heard for a while now about a possible "intra-net" that may be set up between the main Family History Library in Salt Lake City, all the local LDS Chapels in the world, and all the LDS Temples. Quite an undertaking. If some new method of file transfer other than the GEDCOM would be necessary to move information through such a proposed "intra-net", I'm sure that one would be developed. Jim
