XML is a "new, improved" version of HTML, used for creating web pages. I put new, improved in quotes, because a better description would be bloated and unwieldy. Personal opinion <G> At any rate, the only connection it could have to FO, is if Bruce decided to implement it in the Create a Website feature. I sincerely hope he does not. There is an excellent Danish calendar called "Dage" (Days in English) that list member Eva Mckenna told us about recently. It will instantly convert any date between Gregorian, Julian and even the French Republican calendar and it goes all the way back to the year 600. It also names lots of religious holidays. You can download an English version of it from http://octhygesen.homepage.dk/ I keep mine handy in the quick launch bar where I can pop it open whevever I need it. Wayne League

    3. I found a freebie calendar calculator that will go back to 600 and calculate in Julian, Gregorian or Republican calendars. will calculate etc for date differences and elapsed days. Available at http://pages.zdnet.com/wasaywasay/wasaywasay/id4.html Was listed in Lockergnome. 3. NO! FTM exports files in it's own file format by default, you have to select GEDCOM (*.GED) or something like that to export a GEDCOM. But, what can you expect from someone who is satisfied with FTM? Well, it isn't only Family Tree Maker users, a lot of people don't know the difference between a GEDCOM file and a website. Some of them might have a good heart though, and would convert the FTM file to GEDCOM for you. I suppose that it is like most other programs though, it would have to be opened by a version at least as high as the one that produced it. See if you can get your friend to export a real GEDCOM file for you, maybe if you tell him how your little program just can't read his big seller's files, or something to that effect, he will take pity on you and put in a little extra effort. Good Luck, Alfred ========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "John and Joyce Kistenbroker" <Tennridge@blomand.net> > I received a file from a Family Tree Maker user - he said he was sending me > a GEDCOM but it has an .ftw extension instead of a .ged extension. 3. It is surely would be an idealistic dream for me, when I don't know what you mean by the old or the new style. Or are you talking about Gregorian and Julian calendars? ---------- On another note, While browsing the archives, I finally thought of a way that I could keep Immigrate and Emigrate straight in my head. I can remember the difference in an Export and an Import so: Immigrate = Import = Intake = come In Emigrate = Export = Exit = Exhale = Eject Alfred ========= ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack W. 3. Jack I beleive your asking for something that is nearly impossible. Calendar conversions did not occur at the same time from location to location. Also, there different calendars for about everybodys desire. Even considering the main calendars, you are still talking about a large number. Add to this the "official" change date for each governing body, the number of combinations is staggering. Dick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack W. 2. Linda Smith
    3. Hi Jim, I was just whining privately to Paul Smith about this. The greatest feature on the new Windows program is 'Update Your Records". You take a backup copy of about 100 people, not gedcom, and click on the 'update my records', and it finds matches and copies the dates to your disk which you then take home and reinstall. So you don't have to hunt and peck them individually. Nice, but because of the temple codes in FO being different, Jordan River vs. JRIVE, it does not go--sad, huh? Standards don't happen overnight, it takes years to work them up, get everybody up to speed (Including all the companies who produce our applications like FOW & Legacy & UFT), get code written and publish programs to the field. Give Bruce some credit, if there's a new standard being released, he knew about it LONG ago and has made the appropriate changes/enhancements. If the LDS, for whatever reason, has kept the genealogical world in the dark about their new program, then FOW won't be the only program that is incompatible and it is inconcievable to me that the LDS would do that. Along the same lines, you need to understand that you don't write a program overnight. The vast majority of what you will see in ver. 10 was already "in the can" last August when ver. 9 was released. That leaves a year for coding, testing, bug fixes and maybe a few minor enhancements. So what we will see in ver 11 is all of the stuff we have been talking about and requesting during this past year (that isn't already in ver. 10) -- Happy Hunting!! -- Paul Houston, TX, USA ICQ #73314929 Researching: VA - WHITE,LIPSCOMB,HILL,JOHNSON,SAUNDERS, TALBOT,TATE,EVANS NC - SMITH, BOSWELL, RHODES, CAPEHART,MORRIS, MARSHE, BRITT,SHAW View my American Ancestry at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paulrsmith **************** FREE Credit Card Referral Program. 1. [FO] Compatibility with LDS program?
    2. MScheffler
    3. Perhaps I have missed something in the discussion of the new LDS program. However, why would we expect other genealogy programs, including FO, to be compatible with a brand new program if it does not conform to the existing gedcom standards? I would think it would be the responsibility of the LDS programmers to make their new program compatible with the others, not the other way around. They were the original creators of gedcom to address compatibility between programs and data. Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- > The list for version 10 is over???? 3. Thanks to all who replied to my initial query. To Margaret: Thanks for telling me that there was an "official" Wish List and for telling me that Bruce monitors this list and that I could post my "wishes" here. To Alfred: Thanks for telling me how many people are subscribed to this list. It's nice to know how many people are "listening" when I ask a question. Thanks also for giving me the link to the "official" Wish List. I have read the list and find than many of my own personal "wishes" have already been requested by others. I will not repeat them. However, I have a few that weren't mentioned. Should I post them here or on the web page? To Paul: Thanks for your welcome message. The reason it took me so long to "find you" is because I have never "needed you" (the list and the group) in the past. If fact, I don't even "need you" now <VBG> Family Origins has been so easy to install (starting with version 1.0), use, and upgrade, that I never found a need for "help" from a support group. I joined the list tonight because I thought of a couple of things that I thought would make Family Origins even better than it already is and was looking for a place to request them. To Linda: It is my understanding that the LDS conversion from GEDCOM to XML is years away. It is way too soon to worry about how other programs will be able to handle it. I am sure that Bruce is working on it already. To Bruce (if you are listening): It appears to me that you have written your wonderful program in Visual FoxPro. This is based on the extensions of the files in the database. Please let me know either way. I could be wrong. If it is true, I would like to correspond with you privately regarding the direction Microsoft is taking with VFP and it's removal from VS7. By the way, I am a longtime VFP developer. 1. Re: [FO] patch won't install
    2. Wayne League
    3. You may have another version of FO still hanging around on your computer and could be trying to apply the patch to that version. Other versions use the same filenames, ie: Fowin32.exe and Fowin32.hlp. If you have more than one copy of these files on your computer you should probably delete one of them. If the Fowin32.hlp file from one version had been copied into the folder with another version's Fowin32.exe then that would cause the specific problem you mention. It may be necessary for you to reinstall FO from your install CD right over your existing FO. (Doing this will not bother your database data, but having a backup is always indispensable.) After that you should be able to install the patch with no trouble. (Be sure to note which folder you install FO into if it is different than the default directory on the patch) Wayne League "Parkinson" <wraithp@charter.net> wrote: >Okay, started getting code base error, so double checked to >see if the patch installed.
