Perhaps the import into an older version of FO strips some info from the original records? Or the export back out of the older version?? You all keep saying that I have different versions. I don't. They are both the same :) I would have expected the imported GEDCOM to have done what you said, but it didn't. No one was more surprised than I was when I discovered that my spouses and children had doubled! I have transferred like this many times and this is the first time this has happened. Clare

Can't do that. Before I realized there were duplicates, I had already added many more people to the database, so it is now changed. You said in your original message that you thought I had confused "importing a gedcom" with "merge" which was not the case. I should be able to do a duplicate search, tell it to merge and come out with all the duplicates gone. Didn't happen. Just made it worse. Clare
HTML code does not know one hundred spaces or a tab from one space. So it would make no difference on a web page if Family Origins accepted tabs or not. Any white space is treated as one single space. I have hand coded a few census reports to be used on a web site and it gets to be a real pain in the keyboard fingers. To keep columns, I create tables to try to keep things in order. There may be an easier way, but I havent found it. To get the text in a source or note to automatically format on a web page, just as it is in your notes, some plain text, some tabular, and maybe another type or two, you could, probably use the PRE and /PRE tags, but to come out right, the web page would have to use the exact same font so the spacing would be the same. Then, what would happen it someones computer didnt have that font installed? It would substitute something close, but would the tabular report still line up.? It could get to be a big job. I think I remember that you had used "Smart Merge" and it didn't do as well as you had hoped. Have you tried the "Find duplicates to Merge" under the merge road sign? It can get to be a pain in the fingers when you have a large number of individuals with the same name and no birth dates known, but it isn't too bad otherwise. It finds individuals that it thinks could be the same and sets you have the final say on whether to merge them or not. If you have ten John Smiths, and five John Smythes, with no definitive birth dates, it will probably ask you 14 times if the first one is related to each of the others, then 13 times if the next one is related to anyone etc (that is 105 possible combinations that it will ask about and you will begin to loose your patience) BUT, it is easier than looking through the Explorer for each duplicate. Or, if the FGS had lines for "Other spouse", and a link form there to that FGS. The Regular, printable FGS has such a line if there is another spouse, or two or more. I notice in the index, my grandfather is listed four times, one sheet has him as a child in his fathers sheet, the other three are for the three spouses he had. As long as we are wishing, we might as well have him listed only once, with links below his name for: "as child of Joshua and Susan", "as Husband of Laura Reynolds", "as Husband of Mable Ingalls" and "as Husband of Mary Boyce" And then, once I get to any one of these sheets, the other three links would be there. It looks like Patricia are in agreement except on one point, I don't want the last spouse to be the default, My grandfather married his last spouse when he was about 80 years old, she wasn't quite that old, but there were no children. Most of the "children" from the previous marriages were not happy about it and wouldn't want to see her name as the first one shown. Am I "Wishing on a star"? or am I wishing "For the Moon"? All that would be nice, but then it would be nice to be rich as well as good lookin. I am still dreaming, don't wake me! Alfred ======== ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. Alfred (and Bruce, if you're listening), I see that all of the family group chart web pages ARE created. It's just that, when you open one and follow the links down a descendant line, it leads to the FGS of the first spouse only. In order to get to the group sheet with the 2nd spouse and family, you have to go back to the fowndx.htm page and select all available links for a person to get to the sheets which lists other spouses and families. It seems that following the descendant links should lead to all families, even if there is more than one spouse and family. The group sheet should have a link associated with each spouse's name so they could all be followed directly. ***I would think the default would be to include the latest spouse and not the first in the direct links. Or the one set as the "default" spouse. Better yet, that on the fgs web page where the person is listed in the family as a child and it shows their spouses, that there were links to each spouse that led to the individual family pages.*** Patricia At 09:05 PM 6/11/01 -0500, Alfred Eller wrote: >I could be wrong, But -- it wouldn't be the first time. > >It seems to me, that when you ask to select a bunch of family group sheets, >asking for the descendants and their spouses is redundant. Yes, I hit the wrong button and didn't notice it. It should have been "(FOW 9.02)" Sorry about that. Some of the problems with Family Origins 9.0 are addressed in a program patch. It may be a waste of paper for small snippets, though. The cut and paste method most likely would allow the grouping of small "snips" of common info into a body of text that can then be printed or pasted into another program. In addition, the <ALT>+<Print Screen> key combination will allow a "snapshot" of the current window to be stored to the clipboard as a graphic. One can then run Windows Paint program and choose Edit - Paste to view the snap and save it as a .JPG or .BMP (for future viewing, editing and import into other programs). The desired purpose behind the snip will dictate the best scenario from above. -=Kevin=-

Just like you would highlight something in WordPad or anywhere else, EXCEPT! You might have to break it down into little pieces to copy it. Sometimes as you are highlighting, the highlight will seem to jump to, and include something like a graphic or something, and that will mess up the text you are trying to scan. So, you carefully backup the mouse pointer until the extraneous bit is no longer selected, copy that portion, then start selecting just below the unwanted part. It isn't too bad, once you get the hang of it. Another way to do it would be to right click the page and select "View Source" and see if you can find what you want in there to copy. I could be wrong, But -- it wouldnt be the first time. It seems to me, that when you ask to select a bunch of family group sheets, asking for the descendants and their spouses is redundant. (the same goes for ancestors) If you ask for a family group sheet for John Doe and his descendants, he is listed as the father/husband in the first one, and no more, but his children will be listed as children on his sheet, and again as a parent along with their spouse in their own family, If they ever married. FOR INSTANCE: If I select my grandfather and all his ancestors (No need to select their spouses) and then I select him and all his descendants, (again, no need for spouses) I get a family group sheet for all three of my grandfathers marriages, and three marriages for the two grandchildren that I know of that were married three times.
