Windows 98 has a magnifier (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Accessibility -> Magnifier) that can be used. It may take some time to get use to it. Also there is an Accessibility Wizard (under Accessibility) that allows other modifications to be made. I use a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 on my 19" monitor. For almost all applications that is a great combination. I get a wide view of the data and it's big enough for old eyes. But at that resolution, FO's edit and pop-up screens are too small to be used. Right now, I go in and change the resolution whenever I use the program. Is there a better solution? I know Legacy lets the user make these windows as large as they need to be and employs scalable fonts so that the fonts "grow" with the size of the window. Is that possible in FO? (I've been with FO since Release 2 and this hasn't been a problem until the past couple of years. It coincided with tri-focals I recall). Thanks, Jim Winfrey
I am not sure that I understand what you are doing, but it sounds like you are double clicking on a GEDCOM file and expecting it to open in Family Origins. It doesn't work that way with Family Origins. ( it does with FTM ) First, you start Family Origins, go to the "File" menu, select "New database" and create a new database, give it a name that you can associate with the GEDCOM file you have, maybe even the same name. Now, while in this brand new, empty database, go to the "File" menu again and this time select "GEDCOM" - "Import GEDCOM" and navigate to where the GEDCOM is stored and import it. If that is what you are doing, and you are getting the error you mentioned, then there might be something wrong with the GEDCOM. Write back if this doesn't help. I have a gedcom from a person using FTM . When I go to open it, Family Origins opens but I get a warning --quote-Fatal Exception OE has occurred at 017F:bff9Dfff. The current application will be terminated.unquote. Any suggestions on what is happening and any solution to my problem???? Marti Geare
Dear Listers, My first personal database (PDB1) was started about 10 years ago with my great grandfather entered first (Rec#1), my great grandmother next (Rec#2) and then their children Rec#3, Rec#4, etc. As the database grew, I would pause every year or so, make a gedcom and then rename the database and go on from there. Last year, I was up to PDB8 with 607 individuals. Due to deleting and adding, some of the higher record numbers have changed with the gedcoming out and back in but the original entries have remained the same. A few months ago, I had a breakthrough on my research. I found my great grandfather's parents and a bunch of his siblings. I renamed PDB8 to PDB9 and added these new people separately, including my great grandfather again. Then I merged my original gGF into the new gGF and everything went smoothly. PDB9 now has 614 individuals with proper links. BUT, I gedcomed out and back in and now gGM is Rec#1 and the children are 2, 3, etc. gGF is Rec#604. I would like to put my gGF back to Rec#1 but don't know of any easy way to do this. Of course, I could go back to PDB8 and manually add the parents to my original gGF (Rec#1 in this database) instead of adding them separately. Then I could add the siblings as children of the new parents. But there were a lot of other changes in PDB9 - like dates, places, some additional facts, sources, notes, etc. on other individua;s besides the ones discussed here. This would be a major chore to redo. Does anyone have any suggestions or should I just live with PDB9 as it is? Charles

Trying to answer a couple of questions. When did FAMILY ORIGINS first come out? I dont know exactly, but: My first Family Origins Users guide, the one with no version number has the date of April 1992 on the title page. From page ii of the guide: COPYRIGHTS AND TRADEMARKS FAMILY ORIGINS is a trademark of Parsons Technology, Inc. The FAMILY ORIGINS software is licensed property of Parsons Technology, Inc. and is copyright © 1991 1992 by FormalSoft. Manual copyright © 1992 by Parsons Technology, Inc. All rights Reserved. ------------------ Why dont they sell FAMILY ORIGINS in stores? That is a marketing decision made by Genealogy.com, the owners of Family Tree Maker, Maybe they do not know that it is *much* better than FTM, (Or, Maybe they *do* ) ------------------ When will version 10 come out? As for when the next version will be released, no one knows. It will be here when it arrives. The release date has always been a secret, so there is no need discussing it. The last few versions, at least, have arrived before the autumnal equinox. (I just said that because I like the way it rolls off the keyboard <};-) Why do we care anyway? Version 9 is not yet a year old. V-10 will be here someday I will buy as soon as it is sold Alfred

I have Version 8. When will Version 10 go on sale ? Why don't they sell FO in the retail stores? It's much better than FTM. Thank you everyone, I was planning to upgrade to version 9, guess I would be better off waiting for version 10 if it is only a couple months away from release. Carolyn
I looked through the archives and found that Bruce put out the Family Origins Newsletter on August 15, 2000, 21:23:34, and announced that version 9 had been officially released. Would anyone happen to remember when Version 9 was released? Thank you, Carolyn
Had you given us the correct URL in the first place, you might not have gotten so many bad answers <};-) http://www.familyorigins.com/users/d/a/v/Jesse-F-Davis/index.html To update a page or site on the Genealogy.com server that Family origins sends them to by default. you have to delete your personal home page, and start all over. Where you have yours linked to the site you gave us, you will have to be careful to re create your home page using your name exactly as you did before and upload your individual pages in the same order as you did before too. For instance you uploaded one site titled: "Descendants of Johannes Henrich BRUMBACH", but it's URL for linking purposes is: http://www.familyorigins.com/users/d/a/v/Jesse-F-Davis/FAMO2-0001/index.htm That "FAMO2" tells me that it was the second one you uploaded to your home page and the URL will be different if you upload in a different order next time. Another problem: You have to re-create and upload a site all in one session of Family Origins. You cannot get all four ready to upload, then delete the home page and put it all up quickly, like you could on another site where you can FPT it yourself.
