    3. There was more to Dick Eastman's column about the change in technical support. When it becomes available on the Web archive, It might be a good idea for people to read it. Also, I'd invite people to the Online Help Center at www.genealogy.com/help/ to see the help that is available. You can also read the specific support policies about any product or service that you may have. Sincerely, Paul Burchfield, Genealogy.com Technical Support http://www.genealogy.com/support ------------------------Reply Separator------------------------ >>> "Paul Smith" <prsmith@pdq.net> 06/24/01 01:29PM >>> Great: "Genealogy.com's customers got an unpleasant surprise this week. The software producer has announced that they will now be charging for technical support. Apparently this applies to all of the company's products. The announcement was placed in the company's support message boards for Family Tree Maker, Family Origins, Ultimate Family Tree, Family Tree Creator, Family Tree Detective, and the online GenealogyLibrary.com division." The paid-phone support is 800-326-8733. Talking with a technical support representative on the phone will cost $2 per minute billed to a credit card at the time of service. The letter from: Rob Armstrong Sr. Vice President, A & E Television Networks General Manager, Genealogy.com Division About the new technical support and customer service policy can be found at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/fo/messages/3399.html I don't want anyone to forget and spend their life savings on hold <};-) Formalsoft has a rather new message board at: http://formalsoft.com/forums/ There isn't much activity there yet, so I am assuming that not many people know about it. He was merged into the "to" person. >Always put your highlight on the "to" person before the merge and >then you will not lose your focus. I don't think it's that simple. For example, sometimes I change my mind and swap the to/from persons before the merge. I like Alfred's suggestion that if the from person disappears, place the focus on the to person. Or described more simply, simply always place the focus on the surviving person after the merge. However, I suspect that a problem with either of my suggestions is that it might get a duplicate search out of place. In any case, I agree that it is extremely irritating when it happens, and it seems to happen to me quite a bit. 2. Wow, I would have had to strike it rich if this had been a few weeks ago. I joined Gen.com and after two months of trying to get me enrolled I gave up. I was on the phone with them for hours and got no one who knew what they were doing. Now they are calling me every week to join again. No thanks. Pat

    3. It took me a little time to work my way through the genealogy.com web site. The policy differs by the product. For FTM it's $2 a minute as of June 21, 2001. This is also true for the CDs: http://www.genealogy.com/help/ftm_curr.html For FO there is a grace period right now: http://www.genealogy.com/help/fo_disc_more.html and for Ultimate Family Tree, which has been discontinued, there is still a toll number, but without credit card fees: http://www.genealogy.com/help/uft.html The GenForum boards and other on-line resources will remain in place for all the products as of now. 3. Alfred and Margaret: Thank you for your answers. The need tree5exe message came up when I checked the floppy and tried to look at it under "my computer". Obviously not the way to do that. Did go back and redo the import Gedom process twice and the second time it worked. Guess what. One person listed. Oh well, a learning experience. Thanks again. Sally Thoreson

    3. Can you tell us exactly the steps you take to arrive at that message. I don't know when the GEDCOM standard began, but 1970 was a *very* long time ago as far as computers go. If it is a GEDCOM, then Family Origins should be able to import it. But, remember that you should always import a GEDCOM into an empty database to check it out before importing it to your main database. I have Windows 98 and FO 9.2 and the system gives a message that tree5.exe is needed to read the gedcom or that is the way I understand it. He was merged into the "to" person. Always put your highlight on the "to" person before the merge and then you will not lose your focus. Wayne League

Maybe, in a later release, the highlight could be moved, along with the data to the "To" individual so that someone stays on the display. Alfred

    1. [FO] merge within database via drag and drop
    2. Derick
    3. Again, I'm merging two databases, one name at a time via drag-and-drop from another database. On some occasions I encounter identical children in the same database. Auto merge doesn't always cure the problem (since they came from different sources and sometims have different facts). Would it be possible to merge individuals via D&D from within the same file (in future versions) ?

    3. To Alfred and all of the others who have responded, I have found the connection via the relationship calculator. Since I enter information from printed Individual Summary sheets anyway, I simply took the "oldest" ancestor (King Edward I, in this case) and printed his Individual Summary, and then went to each of his/her children who were shown as a direct grandparent (11th, 10th, etc.) one at a time, printing out an Individual Summary as I went along. Alfred's (Wayne's?) suggestion works as well, but doing it this way gives me the means to enter the information afterwards, since I have chosen not to merge databases as a matter of personal preference. Thanks again to one and all who responded. 3. Easy as pie: Highlight one of the people you want to connect in the tree view. Click on Reports/relationship chart (at the bottom of the list). Choose other person. Click on create, and there you are. As far as I know it will only give you the shortest path. If there is more than one descent FO won't tell you that. I wish it would. Out of curiosity, who is the gateway ancestor (the immigrant) who connects your wife to Edward I? JSG ----- Original Message ----- From: "David E. For example, taking a specific person and printing out (or at least displaying on the monitor) each person between him and his 11th great grandfather? I have a very large database given to me on my wife's line that shows one of my her ancestors to be the 11th great grandson of King Edward I of England, and I have gone through the maze one trail at a time and have yet to find the right path, but it is there. According to the relationship calculator, this ancestor is the 11th great grandson and the "common ancestor" is King Edward himself, but there has to be a better way of finding the right path than reaching a dead end and then going down a different trail. I have never been that impressed with being descended from royalty, my main concern has always been accuracy, but on the other hand, it would be interesting to show the connection if it is there. 2. Alfred Eller
    3. Wayne has shown how this is done enough that I think I remember it. Go that youngest person that you want in the line, and export a GEDCOM of his ancestors. Import this GEDCOM into a new, empty temporary database and go to the Oldest ancestor in the line that you wand and print a report on his descendants. You could work in reverse and export the older relatives descendants, then print the ancestors of the younger person. It all depends on the way you want the final report to look. (there are usually less ancestors of the younger to export to the GEDCOM than there are descendants of the elder too.) Good Luck, Alfred ======== ----- Original Message ----- From: "David E. 1. [FO] New On-Line Tutorial
    2. Guest, Jim and/or Olline
    3. While traffic is slow let me get off topic enough to pass on to those who are interested, that Brigham Young University (which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) has just put online a tutorial on internet research that they have been working on for over a year. It comes in two versions, both of which are free. One version includes coverage of LDS Temple ordinances which will be useful to members of the LDS Church. The other version, which omits references to the Temple, will be of benefit to those who have no interest in that part, but are interested in increasing their research skills on the internet.
