If version 8.0 or 9.0 there are patches available for download at http://www.formalsoft.com/files.htm to solve many problems. -=Kevin=- ----- Original Message ----- From: <KMcKellep@aol.com> To: <FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 2:57 PM Subject: [FO] Two windows I am now having problems when I have two files open at the same time. 3. How much memory do you have in your computer? What do you have your "Virtual" memory set at? It sounds like you are running out of resources of some kind, and memory is the primary suspect. Re-installing the program very seldom fixes anything, although an awfully lot of people recommend it. In addition, you can also prepare a "kinship report" for the person you're interested in, and while that report is showing on screen, create a Gedcom based on the report. All people listed in the kinship report will be exported to the Gedcom. This Gedcom would contain more people than an "outline descendant tree" export. >> This sounds like a nice "selective" feature. 3. There is a built in "Fact Type" called "Living" that may give the results that you seek. Or it would be possible to create a fact called "Removed" if "Living" does not produce the desired results. Further expansion of either fact type could be done by using the associated note field. 3. I'm looking for suggestions for the name of Fact titles to cover the following situations: A) My father and grandparents emigrated from Sweden in 1907. I recorded this event by entering the date and place of emigration from Sweden under the fact "Emigration". Their arrival date to New York is recorded under the fact "Immigration". My grandmother was very homesick and she and my father returned to Sweden in 1911 and returned to America the following year, 1912. It seems inappropriate to reuse the facts Emigration and Immigration to record this event, but what should the event be called? "Return to America" or ??? My reluctance to reuse Emigration and Immigration is based on my dictionary definition of immigration, " to come to a new country or region or environment, esp. to settle there". Since they already settled here and my grandfather stayed here during their absence maintaining the household, then it would seem that they didn't emigrate or immigrate on their second voyage to America.. But what do you call this event? B) Another family relation immigrated in 1836 to NYC at the age of two with his parents. In 1852 he sailed from New York to Panama, crossed the isthmus and then sailed up Pacific to San Francisco. What is the best title to document this event? Migration ? I'm open to all suggestions. These are not critical points, but interesting bits of family history which presently lie in paper form in folders, unrecorded in my database. I'd like to share this information cousins. It would far easier to combine it with all the other standard facts so easily recorded in FO, so it would be delivered in one package. I realize that I could probably alter a "Book Report" to add this info, but being a one finger typist, I'm looking for an easier way out. Bob Bjorkman Carlisle, PA.

Byron In addition to the excellent instructions above, which will export ALL the people in the database, the following options are available for creating a Gedcom file. The following are two options that work wonderfully well for extracting a "direct line" or "all related kin" of a particular person. In FTM, you can also prepare an "outline descendant tree" report. Highlight the person of interest, create the report and while it is showing on screen, create a Gedcom from that report. The Gedcom will only contain the people listed in the report. With the report on screen, go to FILE, look for the entry .... Copy/Export Individuals in Outline Descendant Tree about halfway down the menu. In addition, you can also prepare a "kinship report" for the person you're interested in, and while that report is showing on screen, create a Gedcom based on the report. All people listed in the kinship report will be exported to the Gedcom. This Gedcom would contain more people than an "outline descendant tree" export. With the report on screen, go to FILE, look for the entry ... Copy/Export Individuals about midway down the menu Both of these methods are an easy way to filter/gather/export certain people, without having to share the entire database. Mary mleek@bellsouth.net

Would someone on the list please send me specific instructions for generating and exporting a gedcom from FTM and saving it to a disk so she can send me a gedcom. 1. Re: [FO] Combining databases
    2. Alfred Eller
    3. This is my recommendation for importing a GEDCOM into an existing database, whether it is one of your own or one you received from a stranger. Make a backup of your main database! (when I say “Make a backup” I mean, “Make a new backup” don’t overwrite the previous ones here, because if you have a bad error, and you overwrite a good backup with that error, all you have is a duplicate file of your errors.) If you get a GEDCOM from someone, a distant cousin, import it into a new, empty database and study it a bit. You will probably find that it has a lot of duplicate information, but some tree branches or individuals, that you don’t have. To add the single individuals, it is about as easy to type the information in as it is to GEDCOM drag and drop. Although dragging and dropping one individual is quite simple and straightforward. Clean up this temporary file by editing the place names so they conform to your specifications. Check the sources, some people have a lot of redundant information in their sources (looking in a mirror as I type ;-) A source of “GEDCOM file imported July 23, 1998” doesn’t mean much to the first party, and much less to the second. If that is all you have, I think that it might as well be deleted. If you know who it was from, that adds enough to make it useful. Make a backup of your main database! Once you have the temporary database cleaned up, export a separate GEDCOM for each one of those new branches. Import that branch into a copy of your main database and link it to the proper part of the tree, check for any duplicates and merge them. Make a backup of your main database! Import the next branch into your main database, link and merge everything into place. Make a backup of your main database! ETC. Etc. etc. There are some on this list who never import a GEDCOM, they always retype all of the data. I just aint dat good wid a typwritr. Thinking first about why the notes did not transfer, some programs in their gedcom files reference notes to the name on the 1 level and Family Origins will not accept that. You can change the reference from the 1 NAME level to the individual record on the 0 level and then FO will accept the note as a general note. ie: if you see a structure like this in your gedcom file: 0 @I1@ INDI 1 NAME Ava Eugenia /Britt/ 2 NOTE This note will not come through in FO then change it to this: 0 @I1@ INDI 1 NAME Ava Eugenia /Britt/ 1 NOTE Now this note will come through. and the note will appear in FO as a general note. (That's only one possibility of why the notes aren't there.) As for the British pound sign (£) and the umlaut (ü), I can copy and paste both with FO on my computer. Maybe the problem is somewhere in the language settings you have in windows. Wayne League

    3. In my old Star Micronics printer book I found the ASCII character sets. In the extended standard set the number 156 references the ü but in the IBM extended character set the number 156 references the £, which is what I get if I hold down the Alt key and type 156 on the numeric keypad. So, I would suspect that the two programs are speaking different languages. Those numbers above 127 were never set in stone as the first 128 were. But, I don't know what to do about it, unless you could do a search and replace in the GEDCOM. Do I have to copy/paste the notes separately for each person? First of all, have you applied the patch to upgrade your version 8.0 to 8.03? There is definitely problems in 8.0 with the drag & drop that are fixed with the 8.03 patch. Go to http://formalsoft.com/files.htm to get the patch if you have not. Dragging and dropping moves the notes as well as all data for the people you d&d. What it does not do is merge the people you move that way with the same people that may already be there. If you are seeing the people you dragged and dropped and the notes are missing then you may be looking at a copy of that person that was already in the destination database. Look in FO explorer and see if there isn't another person there that is the same one. After you D & D you must then merge all the duplicates that resulted. (Some people drag & drop only one person at a time because it is easier to keep up with everyone you moved that way) If you drag & drop with version 8.0 before you apply the patch for 8.03 then you will get a false source for every one moved. The 8.03 patch provides fixes for other problems also. You can read about what all it fixes from the download site. Wayne League

    3. I can tell Family Origins to not export the notes to a GEDCOM, but I cannot tell it, not make it, not move the notes when I drag and drop. I do not know why the notes didn’t transfer. The merge problem is still there with drag and drop the same as it is with the GEDCOM export and import. I prefer the GEDCOM, because I have more control over what I export. If you drag anyone into a database that is already there, you will have to merge the like individuals. Merging is when you have two instances of the same individual and you combine or merge them into one. It gets to be tiresome if you have many to do. Good luck, Alfred =========== ----- Original Message ----- From: <KMcKellep@aol.com> > Can anyone tell me the best way to move names and notes from one file to > another?
