    3. If there is no information that you want to keep with the one instance of Tom Jones, you can delete him with no bad effects on the other instance. But, if he is linked to an entire family, you have to unlink the family, or delete the entire family using the Edit menu and then delete. If the person isn't linked to a family you can probably just go through the Explorer list and delete from there. Be careful, and be sure to create a backup before you start. I must be getting sleepy, I copied rather than cut to paste my merge comments in the last post. 3. Finding the duplicates is the hardest part. Once you know which ones are duplicates, you "MERGE" the two into one. Either click on the merging road sigh icon, or go to the tools menu and click on "merge" Then you have three choices: 1. Smart merge that does everything for you, but is errors on the side of caution and won't merge two individuals if there is a remote chance that they could not be the same person. You can try it, maybe it will merge a couple for you. 2. "Merge Individual Records", where you choose John Smith as the "From" person and the other John Smith as the "To person" and tell it to combine/ No/ Merge the from into to. (the advantage of merging rather than deleting is that the facts of the from person are added to the to person) that way you get all the facts. (the disadvantage of merging rather than deleting is that the facts of the from person are added to the to person) that way you get some duplicate facts 3: "Find Duplicates to Merge" - The program goes through the data looking for potential matches, sometimes this gets tiresome, especially if you have several people with like names in your database. You get a chance to set the selection parameters as loosely or as strictly as you want. Works to find some long lost duplicates if you can keep your concentration. (the advantage of merging rather than deleting is that the facts of the from person are added to the to person) that way you get all the facts. (the disadvantage of merging rather than deleting is that the facts of the from person are added to the to person) that way you get some duplicate facts If you just have a few, and you know who they are, number two is probably your best bet. 1. Re: [FO] PAF merging files

    3. It is similar to Family Origins, you just make a backup of both files (just in case!) Export a GEDCOM file of everyone in one of the files and import it into the other file. If there are none of the same individuals in the two files, all you have to do is link the two together by adding the child to a family or marrying a couple. If there are some of the same individuals in both databases you have to MERGE (That is a dirty, five letter word), so it might be better to remove those like individuals before exporting the GEDCOM. I don't remember exactly how the merge individuals feature works in PAF, and I suppose it is a little different in different versions. The main thing is to make a backup or two and keep them safely out of harms way while you are working with the files. Here is a good place for your friend to inquire about PAF: http://genforum.genealogy.com/paf/ Good luck, Alfred =========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yvonne Bennett" <yvonne@monmouth.com> > Can someone on the list answer this question for my friend? <<"Do you > know if there is a way to merge 2 family (separate) files in PAF ?">> I > don't use PAF, and we can't find the answer in the help section. > Yvonne > >

    3. Ooops... Confusing "Source Citation" with "Fact Note". The 32K limit is on "Fact Notes" and will allow about 10 pages of text to be entered. If the size of the text file is larger than 32K (10 pages) then some of the methods discussed in the thread earlier this year could be used. 2. Alfred Eller
    3. The "proper place"? I am not at all certain where that would be, but I did a bit of experimenting: In the “Source Text (verbatim text from the source)” I entered text until it stopped taking it, then I copied the whole thing to Word to let it count what that field would hold. I had: 3 pages, 2073 words, 7862 characters (no spaces), 9912 characters with spaces, 23 paragraphs, and 135 lines). In the citation details field I got: 1 page, 209 words, 785 characters(no spaces), 991 characters (with spaces) 3 paragraphs and 14 lines. So it looks like the citation details only holds 10% of what the source text does, But the source text does not get printed on any of the output pages, so if you want he whole thing printed, you will probably have to enter it as a note. I like to enter the whole thing in the source text field, then copy only the pertinent line or two in the citation text. Once it has been cited ten times, you could have the whole thing printed. 1. [FO] IDEAS: <UNVERIFIED FACT>
    2. ladybyrd
    3. I have a lot of UNVERIFIED information that is useful for further research but not necessessarily true and accurate until proven or disproven. I make a <NEWFACT> enclosing the appropriate title for the fact it in the <brackets>. I set it to print ONLY on individual summery // note & source report rather than a book/web reports. I enable the description and use that to summerize the topic of the fact and use a date if its appropriate. I made a fact called <ROOTSWEB> which contains unverified information from the surname/location lists that I subscribe to. As I find useful information I "cut and paste" the whole note from the list to my database. This way I always know at a glance which is <unverified information>, but the information is "hidden in plain site" so I dont forget about it! (example) the screen shows <ROOTSWEB> 1850 Will names all children & spouses the NOTES would contain the rootsweb note containing information about the will the SOURCE would contain the name and contact information of the person or place to get more information <CONFLICT> alerts me to <CONFLICTING INFO> <CROSS> alerts me to <POSSIBLE CROSSED LINES > spots where family lines may have inadvertantly gotten mixed up due to similar names /dates Just a few ideas....hope they help!

    3. In my experience the easiest way is to highlight the person you want as the start of the line (for example, the grandfather of one of your large families)and then do the following: From the toolbar, choose Reports, then Books, then in the dialog box that opens, choose Descendant book (modified register), the number of generations forward you want (usually three works pretty well for your purposes), select whatever other information you want included, and then under the box at the bottom right, "Print to", select ASCII (txt) file. Click on Create, and a dialog box opens asking you to name the new text file. By default it will be placed in the directory you have your FO program, but I usually change this to the Desktop so I can find the new file easily for email purposes. Type in a name for the file (John.txt, something that will identify it for you) and click OK. FO will make an ordinary text file that can be opened in Notepad or any word processor. That's the file you will then be able to easily attach to an email. You can also edit the text file yourself before sending it. Hope this helps, Linda Scheimann On Wed, 11 July 2001, Michael Dorey wrote: > > Would someone please advise me how to send bits of my data base as > attachments. You might try using the free Ram Booster that you can download from http://www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/ That might help and then it might not. But there is no need to reinstall FO for this problem. That will not help. Wayne League
