    3. I just tried it, I got the same message you did when I put a brand new disk in the drive and tried to backup to it. I used the Adaptec DirectCD Wizard to format the disk, then tried a backup, it worked slick as "frost on the back stoop", much faster than to a floppy. Now I remember why I hadn't done this before. There was a warning when I removed the disk that it wasn't readable by regular CD drives, only writeable or rewriteable CD drives would be able to read it. I have a couple of the old, read only drives and there is always the possibility that this drive will go bad and I will have to use the old ones. (does any one know how to spell writeable/writable? It must be too new for Microsoft Word 2000) The Adaptec Create CD, where you write everything in one session and can not write to the same disk again, writes in a format that is readable by all CD drives. Good Luck, Alfred ========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arlene" <aparnes@earthlink.net> > I've been backing up both to MY DOCUMENTS folder and to a CD-RW. > > Now I need to use a new CD. > > I am getting the following message: "You do not have permission to open > this file. 3. Have you formatted the CD? I have to study up on this usage, but it seems to me that to be able to write directly to a CD in multiple sessions, you have to format them first. You can burn a CD in one session without formatting it, but you can not write to it again. If you are using the rewriteable CDs, of course you can, but then the first part is erased and the new files overwrite it. (I think!) Good luck, Alfred =========== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arlene" <aparnes@earthlink.net> > I've been backing up both to MY DOCUMENTS folder and to a CD-RW. > > Now I need to use a new CD. > > I am getting the following message: "You do not have permission to open > this file. 3. With DirectCD, before you can write to the disk like that, you first have to format the disk to be readable and writeable as any floppy would be (but NOT on any PC). Then after you write to it, before you eject the disk, you have to change it to be readable on any PC, whether or not it has DirectCD software on it. This can be done by right mouse clicking on the little open icon for DirectCD. If you close the session without closing the CD, you can write to it again the next time you insert it by right-clicking again and making it writable. It will not overwrite existing files. 3. I created a fact entitle obituary. In this fact I place the name of the newspaper and the date of publication. The notes hold the text of the obit. When I do a "Book" it reads: John had an obituary published on 1 January 2001 in Anycity Record, Anywhere, ZZ. Text of obituary is:..... This allows me to create a custom report listing everyone that I have an obit for, or those I need to find. 3. I do both. I have a source called "Obit (General Source)". For a new obit I create a citation with the person's name, the newspaper, day of publication and page number followed by the text "For full text see death note." I put the full text of the obit in the death note. I use the "memorize" button and "paste" the obit source with the citation for each fact entered from the obit. Dan "Frank L. 3. I'm creating a Descendant's Book - indented type in FO 9.02 Occasionally the line "XXX & YYY had the following children" will be clear to the left margin instead of included in the previous paragraph or on aligned with the previous paragraph. Also, occasionally there seem to be extra blank lines between siblings, or between an individual's vitals and the paragraph of their marriage vitals. At first I thought these incidents resulted from "empty" notes, but after clearing several empty notes that showed an "*" the above anomalies still occur. Does anyone have an clue as to a cure? And what's the best way to Global Search for Notes that contain spaces? Thanks for any help, Dick Chroninger chrono@asde.net www.asde.net/~chrono http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrono/

    3. Yes! That is what the patch is for. Yes! It is too late now. Unless you have a recent backing up of your data. And, Yes! It is only the one database, (at least for now – Get the patch installed!!!) If you do not have a backup, follow Linda’s advice and get some professional help to recover your data. If you have a backup and cannot get into the program to restore a backup: You can rename or delete the file in the windows folder named “FOWIN32.INI” and then you can reopen Family Origins and restore a backup or open another database. (If you don’t install the patch to make it 9.02, you will probably have it happen again) Some of the problems with Family Origins 9.0 are addressed in a program patch. This patch upgrades Family Origins 9.0 to 9.02, and is a free download of about 1MB found at: http://formalsoft.com/files.htm There are thousands hardware combinations, thousands of programs, thousands of ways to set up Windows, and only a small percentage of Family Origins users have that problem. Bruce has it pretty well stopped with the 9.02 patch, but the only real safety net is a good, recent backup. Even one on the hard drive in the same folder as the data files, where FOW puts the backup by default, would solve your problem. And, with only one keystroke each time you shut down. 3. First, do you have current backups? Second (especially if not) do not run defrag utility on your computer, and stop using it if at all possible if you think you want a professional to try to recover your data files. Every time you use Windows and write to the hard drive, you run the risk of overwriting a file you need to recover. 2. Alfred Eller
    3. Going to Internet, then clicking on “my home page” only takes you browsing to your home page, it won’t let you edit it in any way. To get there so you can edit your home page, you have to go to the “internet” menu item, select “go online” and follow the links: “create or edit your Web site” in the top paragraph, then in the right column of the resulting page are three choices, “Create”. Edit” or “delete” your home page. If you delete it, everything comes down, all your uploaded data pages and all. About the only thing you can edit is the text that appears on the home page, your name and your e-mail address. And of course cerate makes a new home page. I have never found a use for the username and password that Genealogy.com sends out, I wonder if they do some good for the FTM people? Now that you have created a new home page, I don’t think you will ever gain access to your old web page again, that new home page made a new file in the windows folder (fowinonl.ini) that seems to hold it’s own access code to your web page. This new file overwrote the old one so there isn’t much chance any more. You can probably send an email to Genealogy.com support and ask that they delete it for you, but I think that is about the best you can do now. Good Luck, Alfred P.S. It was probably the link to the FTM generated site that blew it up in the first place <};-) ============== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald Hunter" <ronaldjhunter@netzero.net> > I can NOT access my home page: > http://www.familyorigins.com/users/h/u/n/Ronald-J-Hunter-OH/index.html > > I used the user names and password that was set to me when I created web > page. 3. I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you entered a photo at "double the size" instead of 100%. If you used photographic software to change the size of the photo it should be possible to resize to a smaller photo. Remember do NOT use the original photo. Make a copy of the photo to work on. That said, there are several ways to prepare a photo to send by email. Make a copy and save it as a JPEG file. This does some compression of the photo data making a smaller file that can be sent as an email attachment. Make a ZIP file from the photo. This compresses the photo file into a smaller file that can be sent as an email attachment. Many of the photographic packages have the capability to send photos by email while using the software. The process formats the photo into a smaller file, usually JPEG, and attaches it to the email. This process works from the original photo without modifying it. (I would work with a copy of the photo just to be on the safe side.) Whatever method is used you should work with a copy of your photo, NOT the original, before attempting the process. Or even better backup your photos before doing any work on them.
