    3. In my Word 97 under File it says Print to PDF... but you have to have Adobe Writer installed to do it. Go to www.bluesquirrel.com and take a look at their PDF writer. It's only $18.95. http://www.bluesquirrel.com/so/specials.html#congress And while I'm at it: Does anybody have a problem with FO creating a report with an index in .rtf format and the index doesn't show up? 3. Woops!!! My sincere apologies, but I just posted a message on this list that should have gone to another one. My apologies to Alfred and all others concerned. Unfortunately, sometimes my fingers go faster on the keyboard than my brain does, and when you subscribe to 6 or 7 lists, you need to pay closer attention to how you address messages that you post. Again, my apologies. Talk about "off topic". . . . . . . . . . . <g> David <clip> MSgt David E. 2. Hi Listers, What is the reason for printing to PDF files? Is this a better format for sending infomation via e-mail or did this discussion come about because someone wanted to upload files to a website? Thanks, Margie in Washington State

    1. Re: [FO] PDF files
    2. Charlie
    3. Margie, PDF files are compressed, so they are efficient for sending by email. Also, it's easy to include graphics (with the right PDF generator). But I use them for very efficient distribution of my genealogy books, which I put on my website available for downloading by my relatives. A PDF "book" with index enables cousins to download the entire book, and only print out the pages they are interested in. I used MS Word and WordPerfect files originally, but this involved generating two versions, and still I wasn't able to provide a version that was readable by everyone. Anyone can get the free PDF reader, even those "strange" cousins who use a Mac. <vbg> Beldin4@aol.com wrote: > > Hi Listers, > What is the reason for printing to PDF files? 3. Ooooooh. I just tried gedliving. Have to say I like it much better than gedclean. However, if you want to exercise some control with people you know are living but for whom you have no date of birth, especially if their spouse is dead, you might want to use gedclean. With gedliving, the date of marriage will be shown if the living spouse does not have a birth date entered. With gedclean, you can tell the program to delete that information for that couple. 3. Thats true. I have Word 97 and have the option to print to PDF, but I have the PDF print driver from the Adobe PhotoDeluxe (ver 3.0) that came with my digital camera. You can purchase this program for about $50 (much cheaper than the price of the full Adobe program <G>). I use this option directly from FO for books that I want to send to others. It then has all the photos, formating, etc that a printed version would have. 3. I may get thrown off the list for this but there's another way to do it. Download the free version of Legacy 3 at www.legacyfamilytree.com . It includes the PDF print driver. Just gedcom your data to Legacy and create the reports there and, then, select the PDF print option. If you print pictures, you'll have to reestablish links to them. I haven't found out how to keep the links in a gedcom transfer. Jim Winfrey

    3. Actually, you are right about Word, but wrong about WordPerfect. WordPerfect 9 does include the ability to create a basic PDF file. word only provides that option if you have Acrobat (or at least PDF Writer) installed.
