The one I use is http://www.getzips.com/default.htm Free lookups or you can purchase the program and run while online or off. Fortunately for me I got the program a few years ago when it was free to download so I still get all the updates for free. And Jerry, wipe that smug look off of your face, you still have the original 9.0 if you haven't applied the patch yourself. Family Origins was never shipped as a complete package with the patch applied. You and I have never had any troubles with the original 9.0, (although I applied the patches as soon as they were available) but some people did, and the ones with the problems were the only ones we have heard from. (Mostly, once in a while someone writes to say how happy they are, but it is usually to complain) Alfred =================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry Bryan" <c24m48@hotmail.com> > I upgraded to version 9 after 9.02 was available. Many of us continue order the new versions as soon as they are released. Usually any problems that turn up are minor. However, a program that may be very stable on most computers may have "glitches", at times due to differences in systems and combinations of programs that may not have shown up as the program was being tested. Normally these "glitches" do not result in the lost of one's data. However, no matter what the computer, user, or program, we should all protect ourselves with backups of our personal data. Our programs may continue work fine, but a hard drive, floppy disk, etc. could fail. I am not reluctant to order version 10 and install it immediately. We are fortunate that Bruce monitors the list and attempts to correct problems should they arise. Monitoring the list is also a good way to learn how to use new features of a particular version. I upgraded to version 9 after 9.02 was available. Therefore, I am not too sure what the problems were with the 9.00 base, but I certainly didn't encounter them because I waited. What's the conventional wisdom, get 10.0 now, or wait for the 10.x patch? Jerry Bryan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
Jerry, From the tone of your note, it sounds to me like you intend to upgrade, and the only question is "now, or later?". Since the patch (if one is needed) will be free, there's no real economic reason to wait ($20 won't earn you very much interest in a couple of months these days). Order now and you'll get to join in when everyone starts discussing the new features. Jerry Bryan wrote: > > I upgraded to version 9 after 9.02 was available. Just thought I'd also pass on the site I use for my UK place names. (The maps aren't the greatest but it can't be beat for locating a place.) This place allows you to type in short lead-ins to a name and will bring up, for you to choose from, all places that start with that lead-in (also showing their county at this time). http://uk2.multimap.com/home.html Ted Bremer Sr TBremerSr@aol.com
Thank you, this was the problem. I searched through the program helps and was not able to find this solution. I am greatly appreciative for this list and the ability to come here and ask and find an answer to my problems. Dennise
Two good reasons. 1. Some city fathers have no imagination and copy the names from other locations without regard to previous usage with states and/or counties. 2. Some cities actually exist across county boundries, and in some cases state and national boundries. I got place finder when I upgraded last year and have gradually been trying to make sure I had counties for all the cities in my database. I have found more than once that some states have the same name city in different counties. An example: Plainview, TX list Planview in 7 different counties. I looked up on the zip code finder on the Internet and find only one Plainview that has a zip code. I also looked in my atlas and there is only one Plainview mentioned. Could someone please explain this? Eleanor
I can think of three possible causes: You haven't got the LDS option set (Options Database Options LDS support) You are exporting the wrong type of GEDCOM, (On the GEDCOM export dialogue window, check the destination option(General, Ancestral File or TempleReady) [I dont know anything about these] You have the fact types set so that some of the LDS facts do not get exported to a GEDCOM: (go to the Lists menu, select Fact Types then click on the fact that you want to be in the GEDCOM, and see if it is selected for export to a GEDCOM.) If none of the above, then try this list again, you might get a better answer. I am trying to send my data with the LDS ordinances included. The GEDCOM is a perfect copy of my data without the LDS ordinances. What am I doing wrong. I have Family Origins 7. Thank you so much for your help with this matter. Dennise

First of all, you have to have at least Windows 95 to run any version of Family Origins later than 6. To upgrade to version 4 or later from 2 or three, you have to create a GEDCOM file and import it into the newer version. It all works quite painlessly. USUALLY! Once in a great while something goes wrong any the user gets desperate and writes a note to this mail list. I dont remember version 2 or three, but in later versions, there is a way to rearrange the order of marriages and children. It is under the edit menu, and headed by rearrange, Oh heck, I gota start the old computer and check or else I will tell you a lie. In Version 2.5, highlight a parent in the family you want to adjust, you hit the slash key to bring up the menu, then the M key for modify, then select Rearrange, then Children or spouses move the highlight over the individual you want to move, hit the enter key, then the arrow keys will move that individual to where you want him or her, hit enter again to make the move stick. Then move another if you want. (I had to read it in the help files it is there plain as day ) Good Luck, Alfred ----- Original Message ----- From: <ncsdfrsd@juno.com> > In replying please remember I am not totally savvy with technology so > please be as clear with any directions as possible. In replying please remember I am not totally savvy with technology so please be as clear with any directions as possible. For instance I have not even imported or exported! 1) Four years ago when I started putting my life's work on Family Origins 2.0 I listed myself first. I am the child of a second marriage. Now I am unable, of course, to put my mother's first marriage and my half-brothers before me. Is there any way to correct this? There are many, many names that follow both marriages. 2) David Cann and Janet Tift bailed me out and sent copies of a 2.0 and 3.0 Family Origin floppies both of which worked. I was able to load them and all my data. Everything has been backed up so hopefully this will never happen again. My question is this - both David and Janet said that floppys are notorious for not staying stable or some similar term! Can you tell me, Alfred or anyone out there how to upgrade from a 2.0 or 3.0 floppy to a newer version on CD ROM? I don't have a clue how to do this. Frances Santos de Dios P.S. Today I confirmed that two people were indeed a set of Great-Grandparents. What a thrill. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Due to a programming error, PAF 5 reads and stores information incorrectly within its database from GEDCOM's. This bug does not effect every individual during GEDCOM Imports, but just certain individuals. The exact failure mode for these individuals is not known, but the symptoms are "Application Error" and program termination, when attempting to open the Edit screen. The same GEDCOM file will Import correctly in PAF 4 and the database can be transferred to PAF 5 without error. Sources in England tell me that this sometimes happens with PAF 4 GEDCOM's and GEDCOM's downloaded from Family Search also. I am not planning to investigate futher, but have two different GEDCOM's created by FOW that are currently causing this problem in PAF 5. This message may appear to be off topic initially, but the symptoms make it look like a FOW issue. It is not an FOW created issue. Your counter parts using PAF may beleive that you are sending bad data. Try to explain to them it is an issue with PAF 5 only. Dick
