    3. If I may add my wish to this? I would like the option to include all photos in all reports, if I want. For instance, under the burial fact, i include a photo of the grave stone, if I have it. When creating a descendent book, even with include photo's checked, this photo is not included. I would like to be able to include it when creating/printing the book. 3. I believe many of us use some kind of symbol either after the surname, before the surname or after or before the given name. These are easily seen in the list of children when going "backwards". And if you send a report to someone, they can also easily see your line. Myself, i use a ^ after the given name. This way, the surnames all still sort with the given names in alphabetical order. If I put the ^ before or after the surname, the explore list will sort with all the Surname^ or ^Surname at the top of the list, which if I do a search on a particular person will mean they won't show up in the usual place with everyone else of that surname. Same reason for not putting the ^ before the given name. They will sort at the first of the alphabetical listing of given names for that particular surname. -- Janelle Holmes Wildair Kennels Dripping Springs, TX

    3. Bruce, it wasn't mentioned in the features of Ver. 10 on the "other" website or on the formalsoft one, but did you ever incorporate an Undo feature on the Merge window? I know many of us would like to see this feature, since we sometimes get a little too Merge happy when we are doing a great number of merges and once you hit the Merge button you are sunk. -- Janelle Holmes Wildair Kennels Dripping Springs, TX

    3. I do a similar thing in that I first choose "look for duplicates" and check every box on the "search criteria" screen, setting the date to zero. After it finishes it's search, I just close the window. Then I run a "duplicates" list. It will have a few more people than "Smart Merge" will merge on it's own, but not many. Norma

    3. Good advice from Dick Wells below. Except that I must say that updates need to be far more often than once a month. Norton AntiVirus has new updates available once per week, usually on Wednesday and if some particularly dangerous has appeared, they issue updates as soon as possible. Other programs also make frequent updates available when the nasties appear. The Sircam and Badtrans viruses went around the world in just a few days. I received several messages with Badtrans which were stopped because I update frequently. Since there are so many new ones appearing now, I along with many others, now look for updates EVERY DAY before going to the email or to the web. It takes such a short time to check that I cannot find a good excuse for not doing it. If an update is available, then it will take a little more time but that provides protection. I do not want to use any more space on this list for this topic. A good place to learn more is: VIRUS-DISCUSSION-L@rootsweb.com Clark Rogers At 06:50 AM 8/15/2001, Dick Wells wrote: >The below message is very typical of most computer users who are afraid of >getting a virus. > >Without meaning to sound like I am bashing these people, I want to set some >facts straight. > >You cannot get a virus by looking at, or saving an attachment. I have just finished reading the archived messages (thank goodness for that feature) and see that other people feel like I do. Thank you to all who posted their feelings about waiting...I now know that I'm not the only person that feels that way. I would much rather wait and order from Bruce than from anyone else and anxiously await a message as to when he will be taking orders. Shirley (FO user since Ver. 1) Gig Harbor, WA

It would be great if this were as simple as checking a box to add photos or birth, death and marriage information already is. Of course it would no longer be an ancestor chart in the true sense of the word, but it would be a great way to flesh out a family that non genealogist types could understand with ease. 3. You're losing the citations for the sources. The simplest way to fix it is with a word processor. For Microsoft word six, I would choose to "find and replace". then type in the "find" box, "3 DATA^p4 TEXT" (without the quotes). In the "replace with" box, I would type: "3 PAGE". Then tell it to replace all. There are a good many other things FTW does not do in a standard way that make it a pain! Norma

    3. The script kiddies have made your assurances obsolete. Depending on your e-mail program and level of security patches, you can get a worm/virus by simply checking the box for showing the body of an e-mail in the preview screen. Some of the new little devils are 2 or 3 stage. You pick up one part simply by having an unread e-mail in your in-box, then you get another part from infected websites, and so on. The script kiddies have gotten quite creative. I wish they would use all that know-how and imagination to fix the bugs in Windows! Norma

    3. The below message is very typical of most computer users who are afraid of getting a virus. Without meaning to sound like I am bashing these people, I want to set some facts straight. You cannot get a virus by looking at, or saving an attachment. You get the virus by executing the attachment. The only exceptions to the looking at are files for Microsoft's Word or Excel. They may contain Macros which are small executable programs that are executed when opening the files. Anti-Virus software has two basic modes of operation. First, the scanning capability of your system, either on demand or automatically at a preset time. Secondly, the full time scan for each file opened or saved. Some newer products also scan E-Mail upon arrival. Anti-Virus software uses a "signature file" which must be updated at least monthly to be of any use. If not kept up to date, why bother checking your system. Initially, when you install the program, the signatures are very old. Update immediately. Updates are usually included for some period of time before a fee is required. Take the time to learn about your computer, the software, and virus's. Education is the most important weapon against them and your best tool to prevent getting a virus. Know what you are saving on your computer and where it came from. Unexpected files, even from a trusted friend, can be suspect. Set you trust levels by how educated each individual is about their computers and content, then cut it in half. When in doubt, scan it first. There is no reason to be afraid of attachments. They are a powerful tool which many people use for transporting information. Much of this information cannot be easily transported without sending media through the mail as an alternative. Keep in mind, a virus can come from any source - floppys, CD's, or electronically. 3. The LST file is the GEDCOM error file created during Import. This is a plain textfile. Use any simple editor such as NotePad or WordPad to view. Your copy of Windows has had the LST suffix associated with another program, Armsetup.exe. Normally, the LST suffix is not associated with any program. 3. Since we're doing the annual wish list, I'll add mine again (maybe it will be a bit higher on the list this year.) Following ancestral lines in the pedigree is easy, you just click on the right arrows until you get to the end of the chosen line. Following the path back down, however, is a bit more complex since there can be multiple lines from a given ancestor. Right now, the only way to know that there is more than one line is to right click and look at the 'View relatives' option at each step - a very cumbersome method. Rather than showing just one child in the leftmost position of the pedigree, I would like for the on-screen pedigree chart to show a listing of all of the children and I would like for the program to indicate which of the children are the lineal ancestors of the root person and to display a code to identify whether it's the paternal or maternal line of the root person. In other words, if there are 12 children and you (the root person) are a descendant of two of them, all 12 should be listed (maybe a scroll box?), the lineal ancestors should have arrows like the leftmost person in the pedigree and they should be blue or pink to indicate your paternal or maternal ancestral line. 3. I agree with Paul's concept. In the Family View screen, some type of indicator of which child(ren) is a "direct line" to the Root Person is needed. The paternal/maternal indicator is a plus.
