    3. I think that you have gotten the database corrupted in some way, sometimes it only takes hitting the right two keys in the wrong order to confuse these computers. Have you applied the patch? Some of the problems with Family Origins 9.0 are addressed in a program patch. This patch upgrades Family Origins 9.0 to 9.02, and is a free download of about 1MB found at: http://formalsoft.com/files.htm Once that is done, you can try again, but I don't think it will work right until you restore a backup. I wonder, if you had started a new instance of FOW after the shutdown what the system resources would have been. Most programs use very few resources when first started. 2. No other programs running in background except Antivirus, Zone Alarm, a display manager, Explorer and the usual four or five Windows 98-related files. FO9 is freezing and requires Control-Alt-Delete to exit. Restarting machine and bringing up FO yields: system resources 38% free; user resources 80% free, GDI resources 36% free. Exiting FO and bringing up TMG yields 82%; 82%; 91% free. System is P2-266, 128 ram, and 15 mb HD. This is the first time I have had this problem. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Marilyn

    3. Remember that Outlook Express "sees" digests as attachments, but they are really the individual text messages. If one wants to remain on digest but not "open" the envelope icons, highlight the first item in the attachment field called "ATT" and then use control key/F3 button simultaneously. That will open up the message source and you can maximize the read the entire digest as one continuous message. I believe this method will also work in Juno. If not, then Juno users may prefer list mail since Juno (similar to AOL) may treat anything over a certain size as an attachment. 3. You can get the Family-Origins-Users messages in the regular way, each message as it is received by the list, and there are no attachments involved. The DIGEST list subscribers always get there messages as attachments to an e-mail message. The messages from the list are certified to be virus free, but, (and there is always one of these) In a person's haste, he could get a message that LOOKS like it came from the list when it did not, and that FAKE MESSAGE could POSSIBLY contain a virus. So you still have to be a little bit careful. The real digest messages will be From: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-D-request@rootsweb.com and the subject will be as follows, (the volume number increments with each mailing) Subject: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-D Digest V01 #255 Just be a little careful when opening your mail, You just never know when a Ted Kazinski (sp?) could show up on the internet. If you would rather get the regular list, send me a note with your email address and tell me to change it over. Or, you can do it yourself, by unsubscribing from the digest and resubscribing to the regular list. >UNSUBSCRIBE from the DIGEST list, Send the word: UNSUBSCRIBE(inside the message) and no additional text to: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-D-request@rootsweb.com Then to subscribe to the regular list: send the word "SUBSCRIBE" and no other test to: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-L-request@rootsweb.com the Family-Origins-Users-Mailing list administrator Alfred Eller ================= ----- Original Message ----- From: "Forrest B. I don't believe you will be seeing this, Janelle. But the best undo for a merge operation is a backup of your database just before you start the process. And I believe FO now gives you a query screen that asks if you want to backup whenever you start a merge operation. So, in effect, you already have an optional undo feature in FO for merging (or any other operation where you choose to backup before you do it)! Wayne League

Heres another suggestion: Before you combine a gedcom file into your database that will require a lot of merging, first add a unique general note phrase to every individual in the gedcom file. You can do this with the little program called "addnote" that you can download from http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/ged.html After the gedcom file has been combined into your database, use the "find" feature and next button to find each instance of your note phrase in turn to see if that individual needs merging or his facts edited, and then delete the note phrase. When the note phrase can no longer be found, the job is complete. Wayne League

One convenient and undocumented feature of FO concerning this topic is the fact that when you step backward in the tree view, back to an ancient ancestor, and then you step forward again, FO will ALWAYS follow the same path going forward that you originally took going back to get there and will always return you to the same focus person that you started with. I think FO must mark a "current child" in each family as it steps backward and it chooses that "current child" again when it steps forward to each family. Try it - - - it works! This is most convenient when finding all of one's earliest ancestors in each line. First you step backward along the top of the pedigree tree as far as you can go for the first earliest ancestor. Then you step forward to the next line branch and go back up that line. You continue going backward and forward, each time back up a different line until you have found the beginning of every line! This is the first step in extracting a gedcom file containing only the kin of a particular focus person. (While waiting on Bruce to give us a kinship selection option.) Wayne League

    3. It should not be necessary for us to have to resort to some contrived system of symbols to mark linear ancestry. I am using up arrows for my paternal lineage and asterisks for maternal PLUS a pound sign to indicate multiple lines. What happens, however, if I want one of my sons to be the root person (or send my database to him. Now, the markings are meaningless since my maternal ancestry is now part of his paternal ancestry. The system needs to be dynamic. 1. [FO] Off Topic - Virus
    2. Dick Wells
    3. Based upon some of the responses, most of you are missing the point in dealing with this potential problem. Dealing with a potential virus is very similar to driving a car. You have multiple choices on how to protect yourself. Consider the following analogy: Your approaching your destination. Now to stop you can: 1. Drive in normally and use the brakes. This is possible because you learned how to operated the car and understand what you are doing. You still have all the other protection devices just in case. 2. Turn off the ignition and coast to a stop. You will be somewhere in the neighborhood of your destination, maybe. This is like using old anti virus software. You will be OK most of the time, but there is a chance of problems. 3. Drive into a fixed object and let that stop the car, using the air bag to protect you. This is like trusting something like software to protect you. You accept anything and trust an external force to keep you safe. 4. Same as above, but you did not replace the air bag after your last outing. This is just like not trying to protect yourself at all or not paying attention. There is another choice, you can just jump out of the car as it passes the destination. That is about the same as giving up on your computer and giving it away. Your best defense is between your ears. Use it and understand what you are doing. So far, nothing has come close to Brain Power and Education. Rely on yourself and keep the other tools as backup's. Dick
