    3. You may want to go to http://www.kinkos.com/ and the bottom right hand corner read about Kinko's prep file. It's a program for PC's that is supposed to let you save your documents on disk in a format that Kinko can use without any problems. I have NOT tried it yet, so don't know how it works, but someone had told me about it and said it was pretty good. Just a suggestion. 3. Sue, Let us know if Alfred's suggestion works. I to would like to print large charts at Kinko's. If it doesn't work we need to put it on the official suggestion list. -----Snip------- Large printouts! If you check with Kinko’s and see what printer they are using, set your computer to output to that printer, (If you can find the drivers) Set the paper size, then see what Family Origins output to the screen looks like. I don’t know that this will work, but with my Epson, I can set the paper size to 9’5” by 44” and the screen output shows that it takes just 4 sheets to print my 8 generation ancestor box chart, but I don’t have any paper this size <{;-( Good luck, Alfred

    2. Thanks for all the tips, Alfred. Great ideas! And I guess I must be smoking my socks because I never particularly noticed (duh) I could delete my databases from within FO... I've always done that the hard way. (stop laughing!) I can't wait to head off to Kinkos and make them think I'm a real technogeek by asking them all this stuff about their printer! haha It will be a while before I get to the point where I'm ready to print out again but I'll be sure to post the result of my adventures at that time. Alfred said, in part: #1. right now,(Version 9) the first place the file locator looks is the start in folder, or the last place you loaded a file from in this session. Version ten: http://formalsoft.com/features.htm is supposed to let you set folders for different types of files. Maybe this wish is already granted. #2. I wrote a short macro for word to change all the surnames to “Title Case” in a GEDCOM. It works great, with a change of a word, it would change them all to all uppercase too. #3. Deleting Databases. If you delete the database using Family Origins it gets rid of al 35 files, the “lst” and “ged” files are left for you to do with as you please. You might want to use the GEDCOM again, and the list file might as well be deleted as soon as you get through checking the import of the GEDCOM. Large printouts! If you check with Kinko’s and see what printer they are using, set your  computer to output to that printer, (If you can find the drivers) Set the paper size, then see what Family Origins output to the screen looks like. If it looks right, capture the printer port output to a file and trot down to Kinko’s with the file on a floppy and see what they can do with it.

Does the last message always look complete, or is it sometimes > clipped in the middle? I say: I receive digests from probably 20 different lists at my AOL account - some of them are quite lengthy. (Yes, there are wordier folks out there than we FOers!) I don't seem to have that "ghost post" feeling from the other digests, just this one, and only on occasion. I don't believe AOL truncates the emails, but I've been known to be wrong! My FO digest always looks totally complete. I've never had clipped messages. I have had weirdo things like the text turns to italics about half way through, but that's it. I'm not complaining, though - just making a comment that it 'seems' like I'm missing them occasionally. It's not like I'm incapable of heading to the archives if I am just burning with curiosity to find an original post! ;-)

    3. OK ALREADY <};-) I already admitted it once, don't make me say it again, PLEASE! I have used only Outlook Express and didn't know any better. Don't think you get all the messages? I wonder if AOL in it's infinite wisdom has decided to truncate the messages at a certain length rather than bounce them? Does the last message always look complete, or is it sometimes clipped in the middle? I have been getting the digests, I haven't checked to see if all the messages are there or not, I just assumed ( there I go again) they were, gotta go now and check. Yes, AOL serves them up differently. That explains why so many people reply to something and the subject line is something like " Re: [FO] Re: FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS-D Digest V01 #254 " Hay people, I just had a thought (rare occasion ). It would make it easier to understand what you are talking about if you would cut and copy the subject of the individual message to the "subject line", or type it in. The digest volume number doesn't say much about the message. Alfred ========= ----- Original Message ----- From: <SueDotLund@aol.com> ------SNIP------ > > Huh? 3. 2. >I believe many of us use some kind of symbol either after the surname, >before the surname or after or before the given name.  These are easily >seen in the list of children when going "backwards". And if you send a >report to someone, they can also easily see your line.  Unlurking again, for a moment.... Although I think this is a super idea to highlight an ancestral line, it is totally ineffective if I want to change the root person -- say, to run a report for my cousin and have her as the root person. That is why I think it would be great to have the program know the correct ancestor line from whichever person is listed as the root. I liked the idea of marking the ancestors pink and blue on the screen so you could immediately see the line - especially in the family view screen. However, additionally, I would like a mark to be included on a printed family group sheet - something like an X or an * in front of the name of, or perhaps bolding the name of the ancestor when they are listed as the child on their parent's sheet. I do much of my research from printed family group sheets and it is a royal pain to try to remember who the ancestor is when I am searching. It's also a royal pain to go through FG sheets with a highlighter. Anyway - I would want the marking to be generated based on who is the root person at the time of printing. Other ideas -- I also work a lot with other's GEDCOMS. I import them into new databases and fiddle around with them for a while and eventually delete the whole thing when I'm done. I run into quite a lot of annoyances (not problems - just slow things) that I would like to see improved. 1. When opening the "import GEDCOM" screen, I would like the file tree to "remember" the folder to which I last had it opened. I have an elaborate file system and usually have to trace through the same six or eight folders just to get to where I store the GEDCOMS. This is a pain when I'm trying to import 4 or 5 of them into my new database for playing privileges. It would be nice if it remembered the location after I find it the first time. 2. I use the Global search and replace feature a lot, mostly to change surnames from all Caps to Upper/Lower case. I hate all cap surnames. SO.....one of two suggestions here.... I would like for the Global Search feature to stay open after executing a change so that I can then select another change without having to go to the menu and get the tool each time. OR...how about some gizmo that would turn all cap surnames back into Upper/Lower case? I know that would still foul up the occasional name (ie. LaFlamme would become Laflamme) but it would be easier to fix the abherrent names than to fix the whole list the way I like it. 3. This is a housekeeping plea: Maybe I'm missing something that's already available, so let me know if I'm smoking my socks, or something... Referring to new databases generating those 34 little files that start with the name of the database, as well as all the LST files for all the GEDCOMS that get opened -- When I'm done with my newly created databases, I have to delete all these other little files along with my database when I'm trashing it. I would like for a database to create a folder for itself to hold all these little files so I can just click on the folder to delete all that stuff, or alternately, when I click on the database to delete it, could it "know" to automatically clean up all the related files that go with it? This may sound like a silly request but I often have 5 or 6 new databases including 30 or more new GEDCOMS that I work with in an evening. This creates a big pile of stuff that I need to weed through for deleting and hope I get it all without deleting the wrong things, too. Kinda scary when I'm already bleary-eyed from staring at a computer all day. Some questions: Someone recently mentioned something related to this that caught my eye but I've lost track of the information. I would like to have my wall chart printed out on one large sheet of paper rather than my having to tape 24 sheets of letter paper together. I know my local Kinko's has a huge printer that would do this but I need to know how I could create a file (what kind of file?) to give them that they could print. I know they don't have a clue what a GEDCOM is because I've asked that before, so I know they don't have any sort of genealogy software loaded. (The fools! If they only knew the business they'd get!) Anyway - any ideas on how to create this, or if it is even possible for them to read the data file for a wall chart? Thanks so much Bruce for this WONDERFUL program! I've been around since V4 and I can't believe I held on to that for several years before "daring" to make the move over from PAF! hahaha! I originally bought it just to get some "fancier" reports than PAF produced. I haven't ever looked back since I got fully functional in FO. I LOVE this program! Okay, I'm done talking, for now... :) Susan Lund

    3. Hi Cliff, No, they are not attachments, they are *seen* as attachments in some mail programs. I use Outlook Express and each message "attached" and *in* a digest is identified by an envelope icon that can be individually replied to and pick up the subject line. Evidently, this method was a Bill Gates idea, because no one using Outlook Express is thrilled with it. If an AOL user forwards an email to me, my OE also *see* that item as an attachment. It does not arrive inline and I must open the attachment (text email) to read it. As I mentioned earlier, using control key/F3 keys simultaneously after highlighting (not opening) one of the subject lines in the "attachments" area of an OE digest message, will open up the message source and allow you to read the entire digest as a plain text message. Rootsweb computers filiter out attachments. People using Netscape (probably Eudora and Pegasus as well as other mail programs) do not *see* attachments to Rootsweb digests. Only the chosen few like us do <grin>.
