I believe this is a problem with the way Windows allocates memory. Multi-table databases are notorious memory hogs. This is another reason why so many folks sing the praises of Unix. Family Origins is merely operating in the Windows environment, utilizing the memory locations as allotted by Windows. You are probably experiencing the same problems many of us have while merging records between two databases. Frustrating, to be sure. --Derick At 06:02 PM 8/18/01, Betty Stokes wrote: >I hope the problem with the "white out" has been fixed. I hope the problem with the "white out" has been fixed. I mean the one where, after a good bit of editing, the tool bar fades and the program locks. Exiting the program and returning fixes it. I have not experienced any problem with normal operating. No loss of data. Mostly, it is when there is more than one database open. We had this problem in Version 8 also. I mean after the patches. And on more than one computer. With Windows 98 and Windows ME. With 128 memory and plenty of room on the hard drive. I know others have had this problem also. I hate to bring this up too often, because, even with the problem, FO is still my program. It was a little scarry at first and now it is just annoying. Betty
I will unlurk for a moment and say that I received the Newsletter on August 4 and it had the news about ver. 10 with the statement, "here is a brief list of the new features in Family Origins 10.0..." Bruce, thank you for all your hard work and your willingness to listen to our wants and incorporating many of them into the newer versions. I have been a loyal FO user since 3.0 (currently use 9.02 and have ordered 10 from Bruce). If so, what are the requirements? =========== Betty, I will assume that the reocrds you are speaking of are in the Ancestral File program. If so, the accuracy of any records there is the responsibility of the person who submitts them, and no doubt they contain their share of mistakes. You can submit your records and they will be included in the Ancestral File program also, but the LDS Church will not "correct" the others, because they give equal credibility to all information submitted. Records can be submitted to Ancestral File on a 3 1/2 inch floppy in a GEDCOM format made by most any genealogy program. Jim
In searching FamilySearch (LDS website), I find mistakes in some of my families. I have documentation to prove the corrections. I read over the ways to submit corrections, but most use PAF or go to the LDS local library. Can these corrections be prepared and sent using Family Origins? If so, what are the requirements? Betty

I didn't get a nofication either. They said the would fix that last year when I uprgraded from 7 to 9. If it wasn't for this list, I wouldn't even have known of the new release. I'm still not sure whar ver 10 has to offer y=that I don't have already, so I've been reading the list for clues. Usually Bruce sends out a Newsletter of new releases, patches, ets. I haven't gotten one yet, that addresses the new ver 10. Lynn

It is still there. Genealogy.con only sells and distributes Family Origins, it is still FormalSoft's baby. I don't know why you couldn't find the FormalSoft site, but the web has been a bit flaky lately, maybe some hacker messing things up some more. Try this URL: http://formalsoft.com/index.htm Yes, Genealogy.com owns Family Tree Maker. I own a 1986 Ford too, but I don't brag about it much <};-) the Family-Origins-Users-Mailing list administrator Alfred Eller =============== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Thigpen" <rst10480@yahoo.com> > What happened to FORMALSOFT? As I recall, it went something like this... Parson's marketed FO for Bruce. This went on for a long time. Then Parson's was bought by the company that owned FTM. I don't recall what they were called at that time, maybe it was Mattel. Anyway, that apparently failed, and Genealogy.com was "spun off" as a separate company. The genealogy programs went with it. I think at about that time, they decided to drop Ultimate Family Tree (formerly Roots). Then recently G.C was bought by the same company that owns the Arts & Entertainment Channel on Cable. (That's why we see so many G.c advertisements on A&E now). So anyway, it seems to be that G.c still "markets" FO, but as far as I can tell, Bruce still "owns" it. Hi List May I as a newbie on this program, v9.0 say ditto, ditto, ditto, as a family history researcher of over 30 years with a huge database. As yet I can only find one fault Why did I not find it earlier Bruce! I upgraded from GEN5 and am updating from my first machine that still sits at the end of my desk winking its little green screen. An Amstrad 6128 running John Campbells Masterfile 128 from 3" diskettes. the only hands-on Family History Database producer that I came any way like liking, was the producer of Family Scrapbook which I loved till he cocked up v3.2 then did a bunk after selling Visionary Endeavours or so I'm told. the address on the tag is right. What happened to FORMALSOFT? Have they sold Family Origins software to GENEALOGY.COM?? Went looking for them on the web this morning and could not find the FORMALSOFT web site. Then I searched for Family Origins... and now I find we have a version 10.0 that is available. Can someone please updated me as to what has happened? I normally get notified about new versions of Family Origins, but I didn't this time. Doesn't GENEALOGY.COM also own Family Tree Maker??? Someone please bring me up to date. Thanks!!!!! Hello Listers, There's been a lot of discussion about identifying other spouses and siblings from the Tree View. I thought maybe some of you would be interested in the way Family Origins did it back in the good old DOS days. When you open a database in v3.0a, the screen gives you a 3 generation tree view with #children:, #marriages: and Notes/Sources? (Yes or No) in the lower left corner of the screen for the highlighted person. As you move around the tree with the arrow keys, the numbers change as does the Yes or No. If you want to see the Spouses of a person with more than 1 marriage, you can hit the S key and a pop up window will show the Spouses with the current one marked with an arrow. You can cursor up or down to the one you want to display and hit Enter. The tree view will now show the new arrangement. If you want to see the siblings, hit the B key (Bro/Sis) and the pop up window will show all the brothere and sisters with an arrow on the current one. If you want to select a different child, cursor up or down to that one and hit Enter. The tree view will now show the new arrangement. In the case of Spouses, the pop up window shows names and marriage years. In the case of Bro/Sis, the pop up window shows names and birth years. I think this system is pretty slick. It is a lot easier than switching to the Family View (which v3.0a doesn't have) to find other spouses and children as we must do now. I'm not proposing this but think that if Bruce wants to respond to some of the requests, this might be an easy solution. Charles Gohlke

Hi all I'm going to be a stick-in-the-mud for a minute. I love seeing the list so active, and I love learning more about FO. But.. -There has not only been alot of activity lately, but long messages caused by cutting and pasting the whole previous message and/or the previous 6 messages. -When I try to follow a certain topic, it continues with the same subject line, but has gotten way off topic, re: Software Development Cycle. Which started out talking about Ver 10 and ended with a long string of reviews on Kinko's. May I request that when you start a new topic that you change your subject line? -And don't the requests for changes on future versions belong with the "Wish List" list? -And then there are way too many "Me too's". By the way, on the subject of Version 10...me too!! :) Thanks Bruce for all your hard work. Jeanne
Which genealogy software does the author/programmer actually provide "hands-on" tech support??? (Betcha can only name one: FAMILY-ORIGINS!!) I had a problem installing my software several versions back. Of course it was a Saturday evening and I actually didnt expect to be able to solve the problem till Monday, during business hours. Within TWO hours of e-mailing a note, Bruce himself, sent me the answer (I needed to download a file from Microsoft) I followed his suggestion and within 5 minutes had the program up and running!!! If I had a faster modem it wouldnt have taken so long!!! <G> Knowing that Bruce listens to our requests and ACTUALLY incorporates many of them in the annual updates, makes me even more enthusiastic about using and recommending the FAMILY ORIGIONS program rather than those "OTHER" program(s) whose attitude is: "...our program it good enough...like it or lump it...and dont bother us till business hours Monday-Friday!" I must admit, making a new "FO Wish List" just after the new version is released has always made me feel a bit guilty...It has struck me as a bit like kids making next year's Christmas list ...on Christmas nite...because they "only" got a Ford not a Ferrarri under the tree ...or someone complaining that there was no caviar at the Christmas party...Just be thankful you have a car and got an invitation!!! <G> HOWEVER, Dick Wells note giving inforrmation on the timeline that Bruce is working under for software development and also Earnies assurances that "now is the time to give Bruce all our new ideas" has cleared up that point, and I will no longer feel guilty!!! THANKS A MILLION, BRUCE!!!
