    3. Dear Wayne Thanks for your reply. I think you may have put your finger exactly on the problem, because the trouble started when I was editing a very long note on my of my entries. This entry also included a long ========= dividing two parts of the note. And the note was about entry no. 400 in my database, which is where the GEDCOM export stopped each time. As you may have already read, I received a tip from Ron, and when I went back and restored from an earlier back-up (but not the most recent), the problem disappeared. Anyhow, I will certainly know what to do if I encounter this error message again. BTW, I am using v9.02 so the problem obviously occurs in newer versions of FO. Thanks again for your help! 3. Dear Ron Thanks for your very quick reply. I appreciate it and it pointed me in the right direction. Assuming that I was facing a corrupted data entry situation, I went back to my *second-last* backup, restored that, and all was well. I had a moderate amount of new data to key in again, but it was worth it. I wonder why it happened? Anyhow, I've ordered v10 and will look forward to trying it out after it completes the long trip across the Pacific. Best wishes Patrick

    3. If you install one version in a different directory than the other, then there is no overwriting done. The upgrade is really a complete program, not something that is added to an earlier version to make it better. The only distinction between the full version and the upgrade is that the users of an earlier version get the "Upgrade" price. I don't know if this is a discount for being loyal customers, or a because there will not be as much technical support required for a previous user as for a new user. Or something altogether different. This sounds sort of like the problem some are having with the tool bar buttons disappearing and then the computer hangs up. It is thought to be a memory management problem. Some computers that even have 128mb or more of RAM have the problem. Windows is a very poor memory manager and that is believed to be the problem. You might try running as few programs at the same time as possible. Also, check the task bar tray and see if you have an unusually large amount of things running all the time there. It would be best to get rid of as many of those as you can do without. There are RAM memory restoring programs that will restore the memory that has been lost during a computer session that might help the problem. One is called "RamBooster" and you can get it at http://www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/ It may or may not help your problem but it won't hurt to try it because it is free. Wayne League

It sounds like you are saying that you found a gedcom file somewhere that has 65000 people in it and and all the notes are written twice, or duplicated. If that's the case then there's not much you can do about it. Since all the notes are different, any kind of global editing is out. You'll have to fix them one at a time. Someone has really fouled up years and years of work by doubling the notes. But that's not so far out, since you normally need to go over any new gedcom with a fine tooth comb anyway, to check the data and make its format agree with your data. Fixing all those notes is not too much extra work besides what you would need to do anyway. The unusual thing is the enormous size of the gedcom file. 65000 people in a database is the result of years and years of research work and you should not expect to zap all that into a database with little or no effort. 3. You're running out of system resources, Nori. There are three things you can do to help with the problem. First, memory is really cheap and you should put as much memory as you can fit or can afford in your system. This is the easiest and cheapest way to get a performance boost from an older machine. Next, (These instructions are for Win 2000 but all of the OS's have similar settings) go to 'Start' 'Settings' 'Control Panel' and double click on 'System'. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and then the 'Performance Options' button. In the box marked 'Application Response' make sure the 'Applications' button is selected. In the box marked 'Virtual memory', click on the 'Change' button. With the C:/ drive selected, make sure that the 'Initial size (MB):' box is set for 2 1/2 times your local memory (e.g. 64 meg times 2.5 = 160) and that the 'Maximum size (MB):' box is set to four times your local memory (e.g.64 meg times 4 = 256). That takes a chunk out of your hard drive and you need to make sure that you have enough available space to do this but, if you don't, a second hard drive or a hard drive upgrade might well be in order. Finally, regardless of how much memory you have installed, if it isn't being managed properly (and Microsoft does a horrible job of it), memory can get used up in a hurry. I have a memory manager installed on my system and I have FAR fewer crashes or locked applications than I used to have. The program I use is called MemTurbo. It is simply marvelous!! It's WELL worth the $20 they ask for it and I install it on all of my friends' machines when asked for help. You can get an evaluation copy at http://www.MemTurbo.com From their web page: Give your system that "Just Booted Feeling" with a single keystoke! The safe, effective, and easy way to boost your system's performance! ...but don't take our word for it: try it yourself for 30 days! * Increases available RAM for applications and the operating system * Defragments system memory * Recovers RAM from applications and the operating system. * Recovers RAM leaks from poorly behaved applications. * Performance-tunes your file caching. * No performance-robbing compression. * No system files modified or replaced. * No drivers or VxDs are installed on your system. * Complete uninstall facility (which we hope you'll never want to use!) Oh, one other thing I thought of. You need to do some housekeeping REGULARLY on your system. You should run scandisk weekly and then defragment your hard drive(s) at least once a month - more often if you do a lot of work on your system. -- Happy Hunting!! -- Paul Houston, TX, USA ICQ #73314929 Researching: VA - WHITE,LIPSCOMB,HILL,JOHNSON,SAUNDERS, TALBOT,TATE,EVANS NC - SMITH, BOSWELL, RHODES, CAPEHART,MORRIS, MARSHE, BRITT,SHAW View my American Ancestry at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paulrsmith **************** FREE Credit Card Referral Program. 3. I would create a new database into which I would import the gedcom. Then, I would find and export ONLY those families or lines that were tied to my genealogy. 3. I have 128MB Ram. I ran into this problem several months ago. This mailing list has helped resolve the majority of the problem as it relates to memory. Through time, and although I have no infallible proof, it is clear and peaceful in my mind that I have this problem only when I have four or more FO databases open and I am trying to edit one of them and even then it may or may not occur. If I have one database open and am editing and I have word open, paintshop open, my email software open, my browser open, etc or all of them, it does not matter, I just don't have the problem. Although it is very convenient when I open FO to have all my databases opened; I've learned that when I plan on doing a lot of editing, I get down to the basic number of databases. 2. I actually got mine today and got it installed. It didn't go as smoothly as v 9 did. That is, it was fine until I deleted 9, then no database. BUT--I did have a backup. Also, I wonder why the default directory still includes Parsons Technology in the path. That Frankly, I probably should warn all those still waiting that there are no major changes, still looks and feels the same. The help files for the new journal report are not too specific on how to use. The instructions for LDS support and the new capabilities are okay. I see that FO 10 will accommodate the changes made in Temple Ready for Windows. I am anxious to try the updating ordinances feature. I remember that I had wondered what Bruce could possibly offer in a program that is already so good. I guess I am glad it hasn't changed a lot. Bruce, you've got to give us some capabilites for inserting graphics files into the Journal Report. Maybe some neat graphics like trees and so on. (Forgive me if you have already done this, I haven't actually tried it yet.) If the journal works the way I think it is supposed to, I know I am going to want some illustrations, etc. I have wished for something along these lines before, but I was never too serious about it with the cheap printers I have had. However, I just got a great new printer, the Hewlett-Packard Office Jet G85. It scans, faxes, copies and prints. Pictures turn out really well. The reality of trying to publish a family book is that it is best done in black and white, but with machines like the G85 available relatively inexpensively, I am betting that print shop technology and prices will soon make it feasible to print out your manuscript with clip art and photos in color and using some of the attractive fonts now available, in color. So I think we are going to need that capability in our programs. (Well, I guess you can use whatever Font you have now, but not in color.) One problem I have is that I don't use one of the high-end word processors, so if I don't print the book from Family Origins, I don't get an index. So I do welcome this development of the family journal report. I am looking forward to experimenting with it. Also, I wanted to mention that I think it is worth upgrading the program, because the computer I am using now has Windows ME, and as far as I can see FO 10 works great with my new computer.

    3. Suggest you go back to your backup files and restore the database to the condition it was before the GEDCOM import. First, you violated one of the preachings of this group by importing the GEDCOM into your live database. Thats a No No! Always import into a blank database and clean it up. Then make small sections of the cleaned up data and merge it into your live and backed up database. The problem you describe sounds like Notes Merging for duplicate individuals. 1. [FO] Strange FO Error Message -- Please Help!
    2. Patrick McDonald
    3. Dear Friends Since v6 I've had absolutely no problems with FO, but now a strange one has cropped up. Whenever I try to export to a GEDCOM, FO stops after processing about 400 entries into my 17,000 person database, and gives the error message: Error #: -902 Error #: 95909 Out of Memory u4allocErDefault FO then aborts. (This doesn't happen when I try to back up.) I first restored my recent backup and tried again. Same problem. Since then, I've completely re-installed FO and checked my memory allocation (I have 128 megs of RAM) but nothing seems to make a difference. I've been running FO on this same computer for nearly two years without a hitch. Any ideas? I use the export to GEDCOM function a lot and am worried that something further will now go wrong. Version 10 should arrive in the mail soon, but I still want to fix this problem! Thanks in advance.
