    2. I suppose 20 people will answer this question, but just in case everyone is out soaking up sun, what I do is go to Lists>Place. Highlight the "place" you want to change, press edit (at the top of that place window.) You can choose whether to print the citations for that place or the entire list. I just jot down the record number and fix the place, then delete. I usually put the notes that appear in the place list into a note. I think some weird things get into the place list when a GEDCOM transfers from one program to another, some of the things I have seen could not possibly have been typed there by any sane genealogist.

    3. Or go to the entry that you want to find out and print that highlighted one. It will print those entries with that particular place. Be sure that the button next to the Highlighted entry is checked and you can do one at a time. It may take a while, but I found that its easier than printing the entire list and then trying to follow the non-place entries. Note the record number and its very easy to locate the one that you want to fix. 3. Let's say a man has been married, divorced, and then remarried. FOWin's box charts show his first wife connected to him with a dotted line. That's fine. But the second wife is connected to the first wife, not to the husband, with a dotted line. This leads to problems in some families. Would it be possible in some future version of FOWin to show a second spouse connected to his/her mate rather than to the previous spouse? Ron Doctor Portland, Oregon

    3. Suggestion: 1. When you find a place like that, put an asterick (*) at the beginning (or if there are commas in it then after the last comma. 2. After you've marked a bunch, go to Reports Menu, Lists, Place List (with events) and run the report to the screen/printer. All the ones you marked will be at the to of the list, with the events that use them. You can then limit your print out to just the first pages. -----Original Message----- From: Sandra E. T. 1. [FO] Editing FPT Files
    2. Jack
    3. Hi Folks, Thanks to all who have written with the suggestion to use 'search and replace' to remove the unwanted information in my FO10 file. Unfortunately, that's not an option in my case. It would probably take twice as long to do that than merely advancing name by name, and editing each note. FYI, the text that I want to remove also contains the mother and fathers name. Going through the 'search and replace' routine would require that I run that utility twice, once for each parent. 'Search and Replace' is, in my opinion more for e.g., changing California to CA, etc. Frankly, I was looking for a Q & D way of editing the FPT file that contains the offending information. Jack

Included with the info moved over (for each person with a parent) was the "natural relationship" phrase. I've tried creating a GEDCOM from FO10, and removing all of those remarks before re-importing, but haven't been successful in getting the edited/revised file to open.< Select from FO v. 10 screen at the very top <tools> then select <global search and replace> the material is likely in what FO calls the <general note> since FTW has only a single note space and its material goes to the FO general note in my experience. FO should permit replacing with nothing (I haven't tried it myself) Now you will learn how lucky you were to switch to FO <g> One gets to fix screw ups easily. They occur when FOW cannot find a graphics file to move to the website folder. Either you have moved or renamed it, or the name isn't one that is recognized by the web page editor. Any pictures that you have in the scrapbook, or the 'GIF' files that Family Origins uses for buttons or backgrounds that can't be found will cause this error. Now for the fun part, Trying to find which graphics are lost. I think some of the HTML editors will find which links are not working. I have Arachnophilia which will analyze a site to see which links aren't resolved. I know that it is a real job trying to find a bunch of these by going through the site and checking each link. 3. "Sunny" <[email protected]> wrote: >I want to print out an ancestor chart with the numbering to start at # 2 >instead of #1. I think you may mean a pedigree chart since the ancestor box chart does not number people 1, 2, etc. The ancestor book and the ahnentafel list also number the people that way. In the latter cases you can send the report to an RTF file and delete the first person thus leaving the start at #2. But on the pedigree chart, you cannot get FO to do other than start with #1. What you can do, however, is send the pedigree chart to a PDF file. If you have the Adobe Acrobat, I assume you could modify the numbers in the PDF pedigree chart. If you have ver. 5 of the free Acrobat Reader, you can copy the pedigree as a graphic, open it in your graphics program and painstakingly delete and re-enter each number with what you want it to be. The chart then would be an image and must always be dealt with as such. Wayne League

    3. "Richard G. Akins" <[email protected]> wrote: > can a PDF file be used as a note, >source, multimedia, or any other way of reference? Yes, a PDF file or any type of file at all can be linked into the scrapbook as a document. When you double click on that item in the scrapbook it will open whatever program is associated with that file and display the subject file. If you are using a version previous to FO10, then you can link the PDF or whatever file to the scrapbook as a sound clip or video clip and it will work the same way. It will show as a sound or video but will work just as well. What you cannot do is have FO include that document as a part of any report. What you can do is have FO print a report normally and then let Acrobat Reader, MSWord, or whatever print the document and gather it together with the report after printing. Wayne League

You don't "open" a gedcom file in FO like you do in FTM. You create a new database and then "import" the gedcom via the file menu in FO. ========== > >Recently I imported into Excel the particular FPT file containing those >comments, and deleted a few of the offending lines. When I tried to open >FO10 I got an out of memory error, or some such. ========== I'm not surprised at that! Messing around with any of the FO database files can only result in grief unless you are really a bona-fide whiz kid! I haven't fooled with any FTM gedcom files in such a long time that I forgot where the "natural relationship" shows up in an FO gedcom import. I thought FO would ignore it. At any rate, if you want to do complicated modifications of a gedcom file or modify an FTM gedcom file so that FO will import it, the Gedcom Explorer or GedX program is the ticket. You can find it at http://www.gedx.com/gedx/ And remember, don't try to "open" the gedcom .... "import" it. Wayne League
