And the "Parsons" thing was a slip of the tongue (or the fingers on the keyboard). Heck, I still call the other company Broderbund, then correct myself twelve times until I get it right. I definitely was on the FormalSoft site today, so I was in the right spot. Thank you for clarifying the web space issue. Yes, my recommendation in the book to come is for people to use the software to create the web pages, then find a host elsewhere. Just needed to be sure that there wasn't already space provided *with* the software. Now, how do you want me to include Rootsmate? My questions would be these: 1. Does it create web pages from the genealogy data? 2. Is web space provided to users of the software? Thanks Bruce! See you in California, Cyndi

He wrote Family Origins and is the sole owner of it. But Genealogy.com now has the exclusive rights to distribute and market Family Origins. Bruce can sell you a copy of Family Origins but in order to do so, he must buy the CD's from Genealogy.com just like any other reseller. And he doesn't make very much profit from selling it. Genealogy.com also owns and sells Family Tree Maker which seems to be their "fair haired child" while, from all appearances, Family Origins is more like their "red headed step child", and I believe they would like to see it go away. For example, if you live in Australia and order FO from genealogy.com they will likely charge you about $35 US just for shipping charges on top of the price of the program. If you order it from Bruce at FormalSoft.com, he will charge you $5 for shipping the same CD to Australia. Bruce is in the process of writing a completely new genealogy program called RootsMate. He says it will be out by the end of the year. It is not clear whether or not there will be a version 11 of Family Origins. This is a summary of the information on this subject that has appeared in parts on this list in the past. Wayne League

Is there actually a RootsMate users list yet? And on the subject of the posting, above, I recall when I first set up my web site (before FTM was G.c), Paul Burchfield said that the space available was unlimited (for all practical purposes). I've never heard anyone say they ran out of space. :-) Also, I do believe that you are entitled to one web page for each product that you own. AT one time I actually owned two copies of FTM (bought the second one just to get an updated copy of the SSDI CDs, on sale for about 5 bucks at a local store), so I set up two separate Web pages. I now actually own 3 of their products (since I started using FO), but I've never tried to set up a third web page..... but I believe it would be easily done. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/

    3. Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >I am using F.O. ver. 7.0. I tried someone's suggestion of exporting it as a gedcom to the floppy and that worked - but I got it back as ver. 9.0 which looks totally different and is on a peach colored background. It has a timeline which I like but I can't get a decent ancestor chart, just big box charts or fan charts. Has the original plain and simple working chart - no boxes just lines - been left out of the newer versions? Also I can't seem to get the horizontal chart where you enter the names and than add parents, etc. Is this done differently in ver. 9.0. Lois< You should not have lost any functionality going from v7 to v9. From the box chart choices, select standard, THEN pay close attention to other available choices. In the lower right you should see <box style>, click on it and another choice is <box style NONE> if you are into plainness, a view I share. From <options>, select <screen font and color> and you should be able to get rid of the peach. <Textured background parchment> is the delault as I recall. Some of the changes from 7 to 8 then to 10 are shown below. I suspect your peach etc comes from somebody else's previous choices. An upgrade from v7 to v10 brand new should only be about $19. The $14.95 book is clearly worthwhile. It looks like it could be useful for inserting a family branch story in a book middle without having to resort to more complex techniques involving genealogy software and fancy features of the word processor to preserve index pagination accuracy. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/4550.asp Version 10 review The Family Journal allows you to create a single document comprised of multiple reports and charts. This document can include narrative books (modified register, etc), pedigree charts, family group sheets, and more. The document can also include a shared index and source bibliography covering all the sections in the document. To create a Family Journal, you add sections (or chapters) to the document, and arrange them into the order you want them printed. You can select various options for the Family Journal, and then click the "Create the Family Journal" button to actually generate the document. FO will recognize this type of reference for general notes but it will not recognize it in a source. FO thinks the reference is the comment. But the comment is still in the gedcom file. You can use your text editor to open the gedcom file and find this code, NS214741, near the end of your gedcom file and there you can see the comment that is supposed to be in the source. 3. My favorite method for making sources match is to print a source list as an RFT. With the two sources one above the other, the difference between them is usually quickly apparent. My source list is large, but I use the Windows "find" feature to locate the sources, note what needs to be done to make the two versions identical, fix them in FO, and delete the RFT when done.
