FormalSoft own Family Origins, and Genealogy.com manufacture and distribute it worldwide. We are the UK/European importers/wholesalers/dealers for Genealogy.com and as such have had Family Origins version 10 and upgrades in stock since it was released at the end of August 2001. I think that you can import the GEDCOM into an new, empty database, then export a GEDCOM of everyone but those who's given name contains "living" File menu, GEDCOM - Export GEDCOM, Give it a name and a place to reside. Select People to Export - General - and other options- Click the green, Mark button, Everyone, Go to the red side, Unmark, and click on "Find" In which Field, select "Given Names" In Comparison, select contains In Search for enter Living Click OK Click OK Import this newly created GEDCOM into another new, empty database and check it out. If it is exactly what you want in your main database, you can import it there. Otherwise, you can do some more editing. Alfred D. I just received a gedcom who did the responsible thing and changed the given names of all living folks to "Living". Since these people were born long after our lines crossed, I would like to just delete them. Is there a way to identify all these folks and do some kind of mass deletion. I estimate the number is around 700 and I sure don't want to manually delete 700 people. Thanks, Jim

Due to several viruses that got my computer, I now must delete and reinstall some programs. Family Origin is one. I am using V.10, what is the easiest way to do this and to restore my backup disks. Thanks in Advance Barb
ALWAYS, ALWAYS put a "guest" gedcom file in its own database until you check it out. It could be corrupted and render your whole database unusable. Click on file, new database, name it and get it set up following the directions on the screen. Then click gedcom, then import, and let the file import to the new database. Once in its own database, you can make sure that the information is something you want, change place and source formats, etc. Then if you want to import some of the material to your database, make a gedcom from it of what you want, avoiding duplicating names if at all possible, and import that new gedcom to your own database. You want to avoid merging unless absolutely necessary. NEVER do any importing without having several backups in case something goes wrong. I am not sure where you mean. If you told it to add a word that is not spelled right, you can use WordPad to open the file, "SPL_Users.TLX" that is in the Family Origins program directory and change the spelling. Just be sure to re-save it as plain text file. Changing the name of the original might not be a bad idea so you could change it back and still use if you goof too badly. If it is just a word that is misspelled in your document, check the Help menu, search for "Spell" and choose the topic, "Spell Check" Alfred D. How do I correct misspelled words in the spell checker?
I just joined this list, but I have been a long time user of Family Origins--I started when it was still a DOS program. I currently have version 8 and think it's time I upgrade, but I am wondering if version 10 is recently released or if I should hold out a little longer for version 11. It seems like they used to release a new version in late summer or fall. The website claims 10 is new, but that could be leftover from whenever they last released it. :-) Thanks! -- Heather Shelton [email protected] -- http://fastmail.fm/ - A no graphics, no pop-ups email service
I was checking out one of the links sent to our list by one of our users today. In it I found a review of Version 9 of FO. In the review they had a screen shot that was helpful to me. I think it had quite a few things that might be helpful to new users. I have been doing a lot of merging lately. Side by side views in family view. Sometimes, it is difficult to tell which John to merge with another John. The website showed an example of the PEDIGREE view side by side while merging. I had not thought of that. In instances where there is doubt, it makes identification clearer. Also, by showing the pedigree, it can be helpful in deciding whether to merge ancestors - or how many generations. Betty
First of all, I would like to know which version of FOW you are using. If it is 8 or above there is a way to drag and drop individuals from one database to another. Every time I do a lookup for someone and send them a GEDCOM file, I add this note: Create a new database to import this GEDCOM into. Once you have reviewed it you can export and copy to your main database what information you are sure you want. Never import an unknown GEDCOM into an existing database without having a couple of good backups first. To Create a new, empty database: (It is probably best to close any open databases by going to the file menu and selecting "Close Database" until all of the databases are closed. Go to the "File" Menu, Select "New Database" You get a new dialog window: "Name for new database?" Then name of the folder it will be in is at the top, you can navigate to where you really want it and/or create a new folder if you want. At the bottom enter a File name for your new database, the first 7 letters have to be different than any existing database in that folder. Hit the save button and the new, empty database is created. While you are in the new, empty database, go to the file menu again, this time choose "GEDCOM" then "Import GEDCOM." Navigate to the GEDCOM you want to import and select it and click on the open button. NOW, look over the new database and make sure everything is truly what you want to add to your existing database, if it is not, now is the time to edit it. If your GEDCOM has a lot of the same people in it as your original database, importing the whole GEDCOM might cause a mess that you will never get cleaned up. MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP of your original database before importing a GEDCOM or dragging new information into it. With version 8 and later, you can open the new database and your original and drag and drop selected individuals, families, or groups of individuals from one to the other. But with a version before 8, you have to import a GEDCOM: GO to the File menu, select GEDCOM and Export GEDCOM and export parts of the file or the whole thing from your newly edited database, then import that GEDCOM into your original. I hope you are not as confused as I am right now, If you are, ask again and I will add more, (Hopefully, more information, not more confusion <};-) Alfred D. This has been mentioned in this thread, but I don't think it can be emphasized enough. Obviously, when merging two people, sources will not merge if they are not exactly equal. But, when merging two people, two different sources will not merge even if they are exactly equal. When merging two people, two sources will merge only if they are identical -- which is to say, if they are the same source and if the citation information (page number, etc.) is the same. The trick is that you must merge equal sources to make them identical )(i.e., the same) before you start merging people. You do this in the source manager. Terminology is difficult here. By "identical" I mean it's the same source. Here's an example. Start with an empty data base. Add one individual, say John Doe born in 1710. As a source, add "Doe Family History, 1689-1900" by James Doe, Jr. Your data base now has only one person, and only one source. Also, for John Doe, there is only one citation to the "Doe Family History" book. So far so good. But you can certainly add a second citation to the same source. There are bad reasons and good reasons to do so. A bad reason might simply be that you have made a mistake. A good reason might be that you are citing both p.20 and p.211. (I think most people would make this a single citation, say to "pp.20, 211", rather than two citations, but I am trying to keep the example simple.) But the point is that for the same person, you can by hand enter multiple citations to the same source. You can also add a second instance of the same source by hand. For example, you could enter "Doe Family History, 1689-1900" by James Doe, Jr. as a source for a second time. I think it would always be a mistake to make such an entry by hand, but it would be a mistake that the program allows you to make. On the other hand, such duplicate instances of the the same source can arise very naturally when you import GEDCOM. So the bottom line when importing and merging GEDCOM is, first merge duplicate sources. Then, merge duplicate people. Otherwise, you can (and usually will) end up with people who have multiple citations to the identical same source. Having said all that, I have a few instances of multiple citations to the identical same source in my data base. Most of them are leftovers from when I first started using the program, and didn't yet fully understand the merge process. Such multiple citations to the identical same source are dreadfully hard to find. I usually find them only by accident. Does anybody know of an easy way to find them? Finally (and this is a wish list item for RootsMate), I wish the list of citations in reports didn't have so many duplicate entries for citations to the same source. Several pages of "2 Ibid.", "3 Ibid.", "4 Ibid." etc. are not very efficient. I wish report references to the "identical same" source (including the same page number or the same whatever else) could point to the same item in the list of citations, rather than having so many duplicates in the list of citations. I'm new to all this and am trying to decide what to get. I've downloaded v8.0 and although it looks nice (I like drag and drop and seeing 5 generations at once), but would like to know what the differences are between the demo version and what's being sold now. I've also told about something new coming out by FO's author, and that has really confused me. Any advice and information would be more than welcome. Thanks. Doug

The family journal publication tools in v 10 are alone sufficient difference. To a casual look 10 is identical to 8, the differences are added underlying functions. FO will create a web site for you, then send it to your website on Familyorigins.com, if you choose, and there is a 10 mb limit. As far as adjusting things, it's a simple matter of deleting the outdated page, and creating a new one.
