I have generated a genealogy book through FO but I copied and pasted into Word because I wanted to add photos, create indexes and some special indexes. When I first built a concordance file ( a word document with table) and matched that against the book, many names were omitted for one reason or another, primarily because Word saw the name with the superscript in it as being different from that name without it. Anyway,, I have been editing the book and building a special concordance file for those names which were not marked for the index. Many names in the uplines were marked for index which need not be, so I was deleting those marks. However, when I perform the mark index function again (with just my new entries) some of those people whom I deleted the markings show back up again as marked. I realize that this really does not have a lot do do with FO, but I felt that some of you may have run into this before. Jim Elting (704) 544-7559 [email protected]

Using the 'rearrange spouses' in the edit menu will sort the families in the proper order even when no dates are given. The liason gets no marriage event but is still treated by FO as a spouse and gets sorted in the order you specify. Within each family section in the book report, undated events may appear out of order, ie: the divorce in 1893 may appear before the marriage if no date is given to the marriage event. Therefore an arbitrary date for the marriage may be necessary (such as 'bef 1893'). Here is a modified register with your basic data created by FO and sent to a text file: Descendants of John Jones - 17 Jul 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. John Jones. He was married to Loopy Loo before 1893. He was divorced from Loopy Loo in 1893. John Jones and Kitty Skids had the following children: 2 i. Whoop Jones was born in 1895. He was married to Mary Permente in 1896. from Wayne League
I'm in the process of putting together various charts and books for an upcoming family reunion. While doing this I thought that it would be nice to have a Photo Tree of my father's generation. The problem that I ran into was that my father was the youngest of 13 children. Needless to say when I created the Photo Tree and chose to include the siblings, they all appeared except my father - the chart only allows 12 siblings. Now one sibling had died as an infant and if she was not included I would be able to show everyone that survived. My other option is to print out 12 Photo Tree's each showing only one of the siblings. Any ideas on how to do this without printing out 12 charts, or am I stuck? I thought I was fairly proficient at using FO, but with a wounded ego and head a couple hat sizes smaller I submit this: One of my cousins had a marriage end in divorce in 1893. He remarried in 1896. In 1895 he was engaged in a liason with another woman which resulted in a child being born. I have tried everything I can think of to get these events to appear in the proper sequence in his book - first marriage and divorce, liason, second marriage - without success. Help, Please. Earl B. Highlight the man with the three "spouses" Go to the Edit menu, Select "Rearrange" - "Spouses" They appear in the reports in the order that they appear here, not necessarily the date of the union. Earl The marriage and divorce dates should work with not problem. Do the facts appear in the correct order in the Edit screen? Secondly, check your order for his spouses, all 3 of them. Arange them in the correct order from the Edit / Rearrange / Spouses. This controls the order in the book reports. Remember the term spouse does not mean marriage, but the association of a couple. This is the first time that I had seen this suggestion (and been using FO since v5). Thanks and more thanks. My problem list is rather large (I know some of them because they are not resolved), but it always seemed so overwhelming. There are 10 items to check in the potential problem list report. If you run the report with only one item checked it will be much less confusing to correct only one item at a time if you print out the report. FO will not let you enter more than one marriage for the same two people, so the situation you have must have come in via a gedcom import from some other genealogy program. I expect the only way you can fix this one is to unlink the spouses from each other and then relink them. As soon as you unlink one spouse, all four links and both families should disappear since they are the same two people. Be sure you make a note of the marriage event and all pertinent data before you unlink so you can reenter the data after you relink .... (including links to children). It's not surprising that the H. initial appeared for both instances since they both are the same person (not duplicates, actually the same person). Wayne League

I have looked at the *Lists*, I would like for quick referral a list showing all that I have in my data base, including names, birth dates, and marriages, so when I am on AOL Genealogy Forum, I can readily answer others. Debby
Through time the Problem report has been improved with range and parameter selections. I have only two issues with this report: 1. Message "Born after Father's Death" which can be OK if withing the normal pregancy period of 9 months, 2. The lack of a way to tag a specific message for an individual as correct. Example died at 100+ is correct for John Doe. Do not want to change the range check, but just tag this one as OK. I do not know of any standard built in report that will give you what you are asking for, but an easy to create Custom Report will provide this type of information. The Custom Report feature is provided to permit anyone to build about any desired report. Two known drawbacks to the reporting are known. First, only the first occurance of any fact will be shown, and secondly you cannot include the notes or sources, multi media files, address info, or To Do info. Sample Report Templates are included on the CD. Just start with one of them as a pattern and make your changes. Operationally, the Report Generator is the same as with any Relational Database program. It may take you a little while to grasp the mechanics, but once that is done, your in business. Marvin, Good advice - also be sure to run the Problems Report anytime you merge data with your master file. Best to create a new file of the data to be merged and bring it up to par before the merge. Saves a LOT of issues later.
