    3. I am sure you will be pleased to know that after I updated my driver(Intellimouse)from Microsoft,I can now use my wheel on my cordless microsoft mouse with FOW Explorer (lefthand panel only). I am slightly surprised about this as (i) I updated when I first obtained Windows XP (ii)It has worked with all of my other programs. As an aside, the download from Microsoft for the Windows XP driver came up with the statement that it had not been approved by Microsoft? So what are to make of that!! David (puzzled)

    3. Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >As for concordances, that may take a while for me to understand, but I'm saving the responses until the time may try to build one.< At times folks want more to their genealogy publishing that just what FO creates in a book. The problem is how to get other material in and still preserve an accurate index. Routing FO book output to an RTF file, causes the records to be marked in a fashion that WordPerfect / Word can recognize and then WordPerfect / Word actually creates the index. Some may even use a publisher type program for greater control over printed output, for example to accomplish two sided printing, by printing pp 1,3, 5 and then turning over and printing, 6, 4, 2. on the proper reverse sides of the paper. FO's newly added "journal" feature is an element in this kind of stuff. "concordances" as a word is probably more frequently encountered in indexing things like the Scriptures or Shakespeare. For example indexing the Shakespeare phrase "neither a borrower nor a lender be", the key words being Borrower and Lender. Computer text searching these days tends to lessen such indexing. Today one can enter the entire phrase in a <google> web search and determine the proper Shakespeare work and location of the phrase within the work. The computer makes one forget what used to be the only way pre computer, kind of like beating carpets pre vacuum cleaners. Paul Studly Cleveland/Chesterland, OH [email protected]

    1. [FO] Re: TempleReady
    2. Thank you all for your responses to my previous inquiries about TempleReady and concordances. I think I knew what TempleReady meant, and hadn't used it since I am not Morman. As for concordances, that may take a while for me to understand, but I'm saving the responses until the time may try to build one. I also have a Trackman with wheel - and it works all the time. I just put the cursor in the correct "pane" - and, whoola! Down come the names or facts. I also like the fact that in the index, when I have a name highlighted, I can go to the person's parents, spouse, or siblings, click on that name, and that person's info comes up. Further, you can Edit from the small panes, rather than returning to the regular view! And finally, there are shortcuts in FO - to Find anyone from the built-in list, I just click: Ctrl+F. To add a new person: Ctrl+I (Individual); spouse: Ctrl+S, etc. Works everytime! =) I love FO - and have sat for hours with friends who use FTM - while they try to navigate through their database - frustrated when it doesn't work the way they "know" it should. I examined several genealogy programs that friends had recommended to me until I finally decided that FO was the most User Friendly - and for old fogies like me, that is important! AND - you really don't have to read the Help info, just use a little of the knowledge you have stored in the back of your brain from other programs you use. (This is not a put-down, since you see I do have a question from time to time - and perhaps I'm just too lazy to read the Help files. lol) Thank you Bruce! Laurie Royal Oak, MI

One of my problems is having common names like Smith and Brown in unrelated branches and hundreds of individuals with less common family surnames that are normally kept in a few separate files. If you're not Mormon, you will probably ignore that. If you are Morman, you should already know what Temple Ready is. A concordance is not actually an index, it's a list from which you can build an index, with some word processors (Word, WordPerfect, etc). In it's basic form it's simply a list of things to be indexed. It may look like a list of names (usually a genealogy file will be indexed on names). When I've used a concordance to build an index, I use a genealogy program custom report to generate the list of names in two columns.... The first column lists the name the way it might appear in the text, ie Joe Smith Jim Monroe Charles Brown etc. The second column lists the name the way I want it to appear in the index. ie Smith, Joe Monroe, Jim Brown, Charles (These lists are very easy to generate using a custom report). Then in the Word processor (I use Word), just tell the program to search your file, comparing everything it finds to your "concordance" file (the list of names I described). Word dutifully goes through the file and creates an index, recording the names and page numbers on which they appear. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/

The equivalent keystroke in FO is Control-F. Once there you again sinply type in Tyler,Sandra (leave the space out), and there you are. The hot keys are just like any other Windows program..... you can tell what the hot keys are by looking at which letter is underlined in the word commands on the menus. For example, either click on the word "Lists" along the top of the screen, or the keystroke Alt-L (becauls the L is underlined), from the list that appears is tells you that a direct way to get to the Lists | Individual List is the keystroke Control-F. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/

    1. [FO] PNG size & Journal scrapbooks
    2. E.Rodier
    3. Does anyone include scrapbooks in FO 10 Journals with multiple reports and charts? This looks like a good feature but FO list participants seem to edit reports in a word processor more often than use the Journal. 161 kb uncompressed TIF saved as 124 kb PNG (scanned census photocopy) 36 kb JPG saved as 68 kb PNG (FO chart saved as JPG) XP small setting converted these images to 24 and 26 kb. The FO charts included as individual pictures are too small to read in a descendant report but serve the purpose of identifying the male of each cousin marriage. Used different color borders for first and second cousin marriages. Windows XP has the most efficient and fastest method I've found for batch conversions of mixed image formats to a very efficient JPG image size. The converted images would not be suitable for editing but look just as good to my eyes when printed as the original scans. 640x480 pixels high is suitable for a half page printed on a color ink jet. Image size may not be critical for Family Origins projects until there is a need to get the maximum number of pictures on a backup product or perhaps included in a report saved as PDF. Noticed that the 125 page Family Origins 10 report would not print whole from screen preview but it did print from the PDF file.
