    2. J.D. Kotrla-Chipps
    3. When I do a "Relationship Chart", it has a "Copy" button in the tool bar at the top. Problem is, I can't find out where it copies the chart. Any clues as to how I might copy this information to a file?

    1. [FO] English baptisms, etc
    2. Arthur Thomas
    3. This is a busy & fast-moving list where subjects have a very short half-life, & I'm having problems keeping up with it all. The following topics are now a bit old, but may be still of some interest. Baptisms In 1538 Anglican parish churches in England were ordered to keep a record of all their baptisms, marriages & burials, a requirement which continues to this day. Very few churches have a complete collection of registers, & most of the surviving ones are now in the relevant County Record Office archives, where they can be freely read in microfiche format. Many of these registers have been transcribed by the LDS Church & made available as the IGI, where for some reason, the baptisms are referred to as christenings. The microfiches also use christening rather than baptism in order that their contents can be identified by a single letter - CMB is more positive than BMB. Initially all this information was written in Latin in a single register with parchment pages, usually very untidily, but over time, separate printed registers were introduced. The baptismal information recorded also changed with time: at first, only the date, the child's forenames & its father's name were given, but later the mother's name was given, & later still the father's occupation, with his village if he was from outside the parish. The IGI & www.familysearch.org omit the occupation, which with the limited number of single forenames commonly used is often the only way to identify the correct George Smith (for example) out of several men so- named. I do use both these sources, but I mark their data as 'questionable' until I've checked the original parish register. Terminology The baptism of one of my earliest known ancestors is recorded as 'March 27, 1778, Hatfield, William, son of Elizabeth Hatfield.' This is quite a neutral entry, but the absence of a father implies that William was born out of wedlock. Many such entries are more pointed, & some are brutal - it seems to depend on the attitude of the parish clerk. The entry could have said '...Elizabeth Hatfield, spinster', or '... William Hatfield, base-born son of Elizabeth Hatfield' or even '... William Hatfield, bastard son of Elizabeth Hatfield'. My practice is to include all the information in the parish register as a note in FO, together with the source, assessed as 'prime'. Arthur Thomas Hampshire, UK

    2. This request may not fall in the problem area of Family Origin, however, this group seems to be willing to assist anyone specially a beginner. I appear to need a little help in order to go forward. Since I am interest in Italian genealogy, I received an E-mail inviting me to sign up to a new worldwide project identified as gedlink.com. Has any one any experience with this program? Thank you, Walt C.

A Christening takes place soon after the child is born, usually on the first Sunday of the following month. Some churches call this "Blessing the child". A prayer is said for the child and he is given a name. Some churches sprinkle water on the head of a baby soon after birth and call it "Baptism". Some churches wait until the child is seven years old before baptizing it., either by sprinkling or immersion. Other churches wait until the child is eight years old and baptize by immerson. The churches that wait a few years before baptizing believe that: Baptizing is for remission of sins. Until a child is seven or eight years old they are free from sins. Virginia

    3. Some programs export several types of GEDCOM files. Some are more compatible than others. 59 pages of list file for an 800 individual GEDCOM seems rather excessive to me. You didn't mention which program the GEDCOM was coming from, or what the problems were that were listed in the *.LST file. Perhaps a different type of GEDCOM export would be more to FOW's liking. As far as the actual Journal, you can create one and review it on screen. If you would like things a bit different, change them and create try#2, . . . They don't even have to be deleted if you send them to the screen/printer for review. The template is retained for the next try, so it is easy to modify what you had previously. I would suggest a small test printing of a scrapbook page, with different page layouts to see which you like best. Preview them on screen, change the options, caption and description, page layouts etc. Remember, what you see on the screen are only enlargements of the thumbnail files, the pictures on the printed page will look much better. It is your journal, you can preview it on screen as many times as you want before committing it to paper. Alfred D. 3. Pardon the confusing message with two topics, it was really a test to see if posting to the FO list was working at all. Internet traffic somewhere along the way lost or delayed an earlier message about scrapbooks. Planning to try the indented descendant report with pictures and one scrapbook for each child in the household of the starting couple. Does anyone have any favorite ideas to share about making the best use of the Journal for a family book? It looks like the size of the indent is fixed and might work best for just a few generations. Is it okay for three or four early generations with long notes and pictures of living people in recent generations? So keen to start a new FO 10 file for experiments with the Journal that I didn't follow up on the GEDCOM import *.LST report. Knew of some issues with transfers of FO 10 GEDCOMs to other genealogy programs and should have known better than to edit a file for a book without checking. Tried GEDX before and found it more confusing than trying to edit a GEDCOM text file. It would be easier in the long run to move any data from non-transfer fields in the original program to individual notes. 3. Are you talking about two different things? I have created some Journals with different types of content. But, there is no *LST report in any of them. The only place I know of where there is a *.LST is the error list when importing a GEDCOM file. That can sometimes get rather long if the generating and importing programs look at the GEDCOM standards from a different viewpoint. You might get better results importing a GEDCOM file if you used the GEDX program to modify the GEDCOM file before importing it. 3. You go to the home page at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp Click on the "Search" tab, Enter a name, and hit the search button, Select one of the "Found" individuals (I usually hold down the shift key so that the information shows up in a new window, so that it if isn't one I want I can delete it and be back at the list of "Finds".) Shift - Click on Pedigree or Family until I find what I am looking for. In the upper left corner of the window, click on the link "Download GEDCOM" The "File Download" dialogue window opens where you have a choice to: Open, Save, Cancel or More info. Choose "Save" Here is where my "Save as" Tutorial might come in handy, go to: http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~adelr/index.htm You do not normally OPEN GEDCOM files, you IMPORT them into a new, empty database. Another of my keyboard macros: Create a new database to import this GEDCOM into. Once you have reviewed it you can export and copy to your main database what information you are sure you want. Never import an unknown GEDCOM into an existing database without having a couple of good backups first. Alfred D. 1. Re: [FO] FHS Family Search GEDCOM
    2. Allan Plucinik
    3. Thomas, I'm assuming you have been successful downloading a GEDCOM file from the FamilySearch website since you have apparently gotten to the point where you are trying to open the resulting GEDCOM file. When downloading the GEDCOM file from the Family Search website, make a note of where you are saving the GEDCOM file on your PC. If you are trying to get the GEDCOM file into an FO database, then you don't want to "Open" it. Rather, you want to IMPORT it into the FO database. (However, a GEDCOM file is just a plain text file so if you want to view its contents you can open it with any word processor including Notepad or Wordpad. But you are probably more interested in importing the GEDCOM file. ) So, to import the GEDCOM file, create a new empty FO database. You SHOULD NOT import it in to your working database because you don't know if you can trust the data. While in this new and empty database, click on FILE in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Then click on GEDCOM in the submenu, then IMPORT GEDCOM. Then select the GEDCOM file you want to import. You may have to browse around for the file. As I mentioned earlier, you should have made a note of the location on your PC to which you downloaded the GEDCOM file. Once you've found the GEDCOM file and clicked on the OPEN button, the file will import into your empty database. Allan Plucinik Colorado Springs, CO "Thomas B. 1. Re: [FO] Family Scrapbooks
    2. E.Rodier
    3. Started a new family book in FO 10, planning to use a Journal with multiple reports and scrapbooks for the first time. Suggestions for making the best possible use of the Journal feature (new in FO 10) are most welcome. Single indented descendant report with pictures for 7 generations might be suitable, or perhaps a family group sheet (like a chapter) for each of the children of the main couple would be better followed by one indented report and scrapbook for each child. Book might be displayed as a sample at the computer genealogy conference in October along with family picture book samples from other genealogy programs. One member of the computer group uses FO 8 but I haven't seen printouts. Last season the computer genealogy group had three meetings out of ten with the subjects of family books, scanning and editing pictures. One of the children is my greatgrandmother and there a separate scrapbook file with 750 pictures for her household. Branch file started from a GEDCOM import has simple data entry with few cited sources or computerized sentences joining facts. An outline with notes and pictures comes closest to an illustrated version of the original typed notes of 1970 without the need to add pictures each time a new RTF report is created. Parts of 1901 online Canadian census images can be included to show family groups. A mix of color pictures and text is okay for home printing but can be expensive if a copy service charges the color rate for all pages to print a PDF or word processor file. Same-name relatives will need a nickname or some method of identification in the FO 10 Journal book index. Even if a researcher plans a carefully edited family book for publication, a direct printout is valuable for the draft stage of a project because the wording of notes is easier to correct in the database. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> > Family Origins has a lot of good features, but I think that picture handling > is not one of its best. 2. Family Origins has a lot of good features, but I think that picture handling is not one of its best. You can add a family picture fromthe role of icons at the top of the screen, where you see the camera. There is a choice there for individual or family pictures. It appears to me that the only use for this would be to have a picture on the family group sheets. This prints at the top of the page and the information begins after that. You can also print a family album. I have thought it would be a wonderful idea if we had a book choice called something like "family album book." In this selection, the family picture would print at the beginning of each family story. maybe if you had this option checked, the family picture would be printed just before the head of household information is given. I bet that is what everybody does, anyway. Just put it in by hand. Oh, yes, I see that another part of the questions are referred to have to handle a picture of several people. Because the program only uses the family picture in the family group sheets, and the individual pictures in family group sheets, pedigree charts and book of reports, I tried to putting a picture of the multiple people being in the directory and then and then linking each person shown in the picture to that biome. The problem is that when you use the picture in reports you get it printed multiple times. So one of the things I have done is use my photo-handling software to crop out each individual and then save separately. That way you get just the individual in reports. This is a bit of work. If I have a picture that shows the parents and all the siblings, I generally link that as a family picture as mentioned above, and also use the individual pictures with each family member. I should mention the doubt until just recently I didn't have a printer that did a satisfactory job of printing pictures for reports, I have a good printer now and use pictures more often.
