WRONG ! You have 2 of the best Tech Support options right here. First, there is a large contingent of members of this list who can solve a variety of problems. You may get some incorrect information from some who may misunderstand your needs or are trying to help based upon their own experiences. Secondly, the author of Family Origins is a active member of this list and provides guidence as well. Now to your specific problem. You need to tell us a lot more. On your XP laptop, did you back up your data before trying to add this other batch? What program were you using to perform this "USB data exchange"? What files were you trying to move or copy? What do you mean FOW 10 did not like this? - specific messages. The message you detailed about the error opening the program is from XP. It sounds like you corrupted the installation of FOW 10. Just re-install it and try again. You may have also created other faults within Windows, which could be a much more serious matter. Isn't that ceremony usually referred to as a "Solemnization"? You either could make a fact for that or list it in marriage notes: "The marriage was solemnized on --------- at ---------------" giving the church name, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick Wells" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 28, 2002 9:23 AM Subject: Re: [FO] marriage event question > There is no correct answer, but let me ask you a question. > > How many divorces would it take to dissolve the marriage? Thanks to all whom made suggestions on handling the 2 marriage "events" I'll probably go with just including the data and place of the religious "marriage" in the note field of the civil marriage date. I do realize that the civil marriage is the actual marriage event, but wanted to record for posterity that there was a second event and where and when it occurred. Thanks for all the suggestion. -- John Chapman "THESE are the times that try men's souls.." Thomas Paine 1776 Home Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~johnjay/
In Belgium, for example, the civil ceremony is required and the church ceremony is "optional". I made another mistake, but have caught it. I now need to see if this is the way to fix it. I as the subject says, put the same family in twice, Do I just delete the parents, in the error entry? If this is not the correct way, what is? Thanks Debby
If you only duplicated this couple, and the other entry is complete, just delete the extra family and included individuals. If your duplicate entry has some new facts, or some new children, then it would be probably best to MERGE the two fathers and MERGE the two mothers, so that you retain those new facts. You may, then find that you have two marriage events for them, you can compare and delete the extra facts. Alfred D. This is not a Family Origins problem, but a request for a solution to a "minor" problem I have with a marriage event. Our son eloped last year and of course we entered the data of his civil marriage, which is the actual date of his marriage. However, he and his wife have now had religious ceremony. Can anyone suggest how to handle this in FO 10? I doesn't seem logical, to me anyway, to list two "marriage" events. Or is it? with a note that the 2nd event was the religious ceremony. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks -- John Chapman "THESE are the times that try men's souls.." Thomas Paine 1776 Home Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~johnjay/
There is no correct answer, but let me ask you a question. How many divorces would it take to dissolve the marriage? I suspect only one since the second marriage was only a cermony and probably did not have the legal paperwork. Regardless of how you record it, for clarification and completeness, use the marriage notes to add this supplemental information. Since there were two "marriage" events, it would seem perfectly logical to enter both of them. Thanks Wayne, good idea. I'll have a look at what impact, if any, that might have on other reports, but it sounds like the answer. I occasionally (but not often) use the Author field as such, but I could always move that data to the description to free the field for this use. There's a few hundred sources to change, but it should be worth it. Naturally I shall experiment on a test database first. The suggestion is much appreciated. If you wanted to change the filenames of a thousand image files, you could use the Ulead Photo Explorer program which is a pretty good photo management program and in version 6 it is freeware. With it you can highlight from one to all the files in a folder and have it rename them all very quickly. Or it will renumber them, or change the case, replace part of the names, add some text, or crop some text from all of them, all in one operation. It will also do other neat things, such as arrange photos on a sheet of photo paper with the number of pictures you specify per page and print all the photos you have highlighted using as many sheets as necessary.
