Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? The heading for index prints on a book in RTF format, but there is no index. Also, is it normal for the pictures not to go into an RTF file? On the ASCII txt file the photo checkbox gets grayed out, but not on RTF. I am on FO ver 9. Should I go to 10? > Regards, > > Guy C. Snyder >

I wish that too. The only thing I could think of to help was to make a duplicate copy (Restore the backup to another folder) and uncheck the events I don't want. That way, they stay unchecked. I renamed the database and if I do anything extensive to my usual database, I drag and drop into it. Our direct lines change less than we think. I have a print out from PAF of my direct line pedigree charts printed on a dot matrix printer that is surprisingly the same as today. I don't always go to the trouble of entering those custom events for people who are not on a direct line family Group Sheet. Another thing might be Wayne's suggestion to make a database template. Make a duplicate database set up the way you want it. Delete all the people. Then use it to import people into whenever you have a special need. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. Since I had to print out a family book, only 7 generations, and had to make changes to it in a word processor to remove information. I can understand where Guy is coming from. I currently have 84 unique fact types (user defined and standard). To print out a book with just birth, marriage, and death information means that I need to change 81 fact types not to print in the book, print my book, then go back and change 81 fact types back again. My wish would be to have an option for the Books to print just basic information. I think that I told this story before, so if you have already read, it you can divert your eyes. I created an empty database, named it NoOutput. Then I went through the Facts List and unchecked all of the output options for every fact. Then I made a backup of it. Now if I want a report with only the birth, marriage and death facts, I Restore the backup of NoOutput and import a GEDCOM that I exported from the desired database. Go to the Facts List and put a check mark in the output options for the facts I want, then create the report. After the report is created you can delete this database, you still have the backup of NoOutput to use for the next project. Alfred D. That is just the way it is when you paste or insert files from your word processor without saving it to text in advance. I have wished for a tab capability in the notes for years. It may have something to do with preparing the text for gedcom. To eliminate the square boxes, save the word processor file to a text file before you copy or insert it into Family Origins and it will do away with the boxes. I get the square boxes in my Family Group Sheets and other screen reports that are printed directly. If they are saved to rtf, apparently .rtf reads them correctly and the boxes disappear. It is too late for version 10. Maybe it will not be a problem in Rootsmate. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: "John S. I would like to create a ancestry/descendant book that does not include all of the facts. In other words. This is the way I would normally get the book info. 1. Simon D. It sounds as if you are using tabs in the text and importing that text to FO. Tabs do not reproduce in FO (unfortunately). Keith Thompson "John S. What am I doing wrong to get square boxes instead of tabs, when I print a Book report from FO10? It doesn't happen to text or RTF reports that I look at with WORD or Notepad. Only the on screen or print view. I don't have a square character on my keyboard to show it. Have A Great Day John S. Wilkinson Rome, NY mailto:[email protected]
The basic problem you encountered is caused by two things. 1. The font being used cannot print the character representing the numeric code for it., and 2. The database report writer (used to create the report) does not permit certain characters such as tabs to function. At this time, and for a long time in the past, a fix for this problem has been on the Wish List. Many users want to add columnized data to their notes. The only way presently is to use spaces, but that only works for one specific font and font size. Any changes to the font and the columns are out of synch. When you delete or merge people, FO simply "marks" the record as deleted, but the record is still there behind the scenes and is still counted when you do the "File, Information" command. So for example, if you have 10,000 people in your database, and then delete 4000 of them, the "File, Information" command will still show you as having 10,000 people in your database. If you then do the "File, Pack database" command, FO will physically remove the marked deleted records, and the "File, Information" command will now show 6,000 people in the database. - Bruce <A HREF="http://RootsMate.com">http://RootsMate.com</A> ==== FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Mailing List ==== The "Family OriginsĀ® Wish List" http://formalsoft.com/wishlist.htm ??? I don't think that it will make much difference in the GEDCOM itself. But, you will know how many individuals should be in the GEDCOM if you pack first, then check the database information. I exported a GEDCOM of my doubled database that I had merged, the one that showed 18208 individuals in the information, then, I packed it and exported another GEDCOM, there was one byte difference in their file sizes. But the Backup was a different story, it had to make room for all of the deleted/merged information. Alfred D. By the way, you can't lose people when transferring via backup, since a backup simply zips up the database, and unzips it on the other end. The database is never even opened to allow loss of data.
