    1. [FO] RootsMate Preview
    2. I know this is off-topic for Family Origins, but hopefully Alfred will let it slide <g>. A lot of folks have been asking about our upcoming RootsMate software. And of course, since it won't be released until the end of the year, we aren't saying much about it. However... if you are in the Ontario, California area this week, stop by our booth at the Federation of Genealogical Societies conference to say hi and see a preview showing of this "top secret" program <g>. The conference is being held at the Ontario Convention Center. The vendor's area is free, and we will be there in booth 510: Thursday August 8 from 9:30am - 6:00pm Friday August 9 from 9:00am - 6:00pm Saturday August 10 from 9:00am - 4:00pm I look forward to meeting those of you who can make it. For more information about the conference itself, there is a link to their site on our site at: http://rootsmate.com. - Bruce <A HREF="http://RootsMate.com">http://RootsMate.com</A>

But she cannot restore your backup with her FO5 (because it is an earlier version and doesn't know about the advances in 9.02.) Neither can she open one of your databases. You will have to send her a gedcom file for her to get data from your FO9.02. Wayne League

Alfred suggested that you restore the database to a new, empty FOLDER, not to a new database. You cannot restore a backup to an existing database for the restore re-creates the database at the restore location. If you restore the backup to the same folder as the existing database, it will overwrite it with the backup .... at least it is supposed to. I don't remember whether FO7 would delete the existing database before it restored the backup or not. If it did not then that might explain how you are getting all the duplicate people with the same record number ... if FO7 is adding the restored database to the existing database rather than deleting the existing database first. But packing the database will not cause duplicates to appear. Since you had duplicates before you restored the database, that indicates you also had the duplicates before you backed up and therefore the duplicates are also in the backup. You might try exporting a gedcom file of your entire database and importing it back into a new database. (With a gedcom file, you DO create a new, empty database to import it into.) When FO imports a gedcom file, it ignores the record numbers in the gedcom, starts the first person with record number one and goes up sequentially with no duplicated record numbers. So, if duplicates are in the gedcom file, they should all have different record numbers in the imported database and you should be able to merge them. I can't imagine how FO allowed your database to get in such a condition. The only thing I can think of is if FO7 were appending a restore to an existing database rather than overwriting it. I vaguely remember old versions of FO might have done that and I don't remember if it was fixed by the time FO7 came along or not. Wayne League

    3. If I recall correctly, this was the procedure I followed: 1. Made two backups - one to floppy and one to hard 2. Then I packed and compressed my database as I believed this would overcome some problems I was having with the programme. I then found that I had two of most people. 3. So, I restored from the backup - but with the same result. 4. I opened another database (empty) and restored from the other backup. I now have one database where most people are duplicated, but because they both have the same record number, I cannot merge them as they are the 'same person'. On the other database, it appears all the trees have become unlinked, and the sources are jumbled with the wrong people. What a mess!! You can print the scrapbook as a photo chart or you can include the scrapbook in a journal. When printing the scrapbook, choose 1 row and 1 column to get only one picture per page. That way the document will be full page size. When you go to print, you have the option to print all pages, current page, or a range of pages. Wayne League

    1. [FO] Your dilemma & the value of attachments
    2. MScheffler
    3. Hi Goldie, I cannot answer your question about the digest unless you are simply not subscribing and unsubscribing in the correct manner, but I have some comments on filtering out attachments. First, if you have a working, up-to-date virus program you DO NOT need to worry about attachments. Of course if some email looks weird and it is some subject you know nothing about, you might as well delete the email without opening the attachment. I have been on the net about 6 years, receive over 100 emails a day, have never filtered out anything, and my Norton antivirus has found EVERY potentially bad email. If you want more protection than an un-to-date antivirus program, type Zone Alarm in a search, and find the url to download the free version of the program. Zone Alarm is a software program called a firewall. I used Zone Alarm in combination with my antivirus program before I upgraded to a cable modem (now have a different type of firewall built into my router), and found it a good program to have. Zone Alarm had a feature to scan email for known virus file extensions and rename them before any harm can come to someone's computer. If you were expecting attachments and believed them to be safe, you could rename them and open them. And, if any you opened turned out to have a virus, your virus program would intercept the virus. A firewall program also has technology that keeps someone from breaking into your computer and using it as a server to send viruses out to others, potentially without your knowledge. Your filter won't help this situation at all. Attachments are an excellent way of sharing genealogy materials. Several times a week I send research guidelines, family group sheets, pedigree charts, small computer generated books, or other FO generated documents as attachments. I would hate to think that many or most of the people I share information with, are filtering out attachments. To me it makes no sense, not to use attachments when they are such a useful feature of email and greatly enhances the ability to share genealogy material. Whether you want to be on digest or list mode, is obviously your decision. But I do urge you to rethink your "attachment policy" as you are likely missing material that might be very useful. Have you tried sending an email request to [email protected], putting subscribe as the only word in the body of the message and on the subject line? If you are doing this, and it does not work, the list administrator may be able to unsubscribe and subscribe you to the List (L) mode. To unsubscribe from the digest, use the same procedure substituting D for L and using the word unsubscribe. All rootsweb lists work the same way. This is a very useful list, and I think you will find it helpful once you get subscribed in the manner you choose (list vs. digest mode). Margaret Scheffler

    3. Multiple scrapbooks can be included in FO 10 Journals with multiple reports. Take care to use each scrapbook for sources of similar shape if you want more than one image per page. My current FO 10 project has a mix of very wide and very tall source documents because the registration forms changed in Ontario around 1900. Decided to add the tall ones for the descendant and the wide ones to the spouse scrapbook or whatever combination fits best for each household. View the Journal frequently as the pictures are added to make sure you like the result. Didn't find a way to move pictures with captions from one scrapbook to another. Wasn't able to add family scrapbooks to a Journal, just one picture prints on a group sheet. Planning to use one indented descendant report for each of the children in the main file with an ancestor chart for the oldest or most important child as a kind of divider and the scrapbook(s) of sources following each report. One other decision was to remove facts and memos from the file used for the Journal so that basic events and notes read well enough in book form without editing. More research to be done and I don't want to take time editing sentences in each version of a word processor book. 3. This is going to be a strange post..because I will never be able to read it and unless someone answers me...I will remain in the dark... this is my delima... I started folowing my family roots and discovered Rootsweb and in time discvered all their mailing lists..I joined several and then discovered that my computer won't accept them because most digest individual mails come through as attachments. I have a no attachments filter on Outlook Express... this proved an annoyance but I was able to go to the other groups and unsub from the digest and resub on the individual mail list.. My problem is..I can't find this group listed in any of the lists on Rootsweb..now I'm not saying, it isn't there..I just can't find it... so I tried doing it with the email addresses I have and I get back "mail undeliverable". So now, what to do??? Can someone take pity on me and mail me at my own email address [email protected] and tell me what to try next.. I don't really want to unsub..but I have system that works for most everything and so far it's filtered out a lot of viruses and I don't want to fool with it and risk messing it up. 3. To add to the information: MSWorks has Word 97 and yes it works with .rtf files. I like them cause you can update the information from FO. Take out extra lines, correct spelling and if you put it in 2 column formats it takes less pages than all in one column (Newspaper publishers trick). After you have done the updates and editing, save it in the Word format .doc and it will take less space on your hard drive.
