(FYI, After complaining about not being able to get the "advanced viewer" for the 1930 census, I recently received this message from Ancestry help people.) "Dear Yvonne, Currently the Advanced Image Viewer for the 1930 Census only works correctly in Microsoft Internet Explorer. For full access to the Census Images for 1930, you will need to download this software. You can download it for free at the following web address: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp" Now they tell us! 1. RE: [FO] Saved E-Mail
    2. Bob Meador
    3. Sandra, From my understanding of your e-mail - you want to save your e-mails in some organized fashion so that you can read them later. I have been doing this for years and it is very easy. Rough steps (using Outlook, not Express). Set rules to have mail go directly to specific folders. If you don't want to do this, have all mail come to your inbox and hold and drop the mail with your mouse to the special folders you want them to go into. (I always delete unwanted e-mail immediately upon receipt). When you have many (50-100) e-mails in a specific folder you can then "export" it to a file. This process starts with the "file" menu with the selection of "import-export" You then select "export to a file" You then select "comma separated values (windows)" Then they will ask you for a folder to export Then you are asked for name and "path" top put the new file into. Do this, I usually include a file name such a c:\documents\Family Origins e-mail 8-8-02. This will give you a file that you can open using Word (be sure that all files are shown). The file you want to open will be an Excel file with the name you have given it. Then you do a "save-as" and select "rich text" for the format. - use the same name. You now have a Word document that you can read and manipulate with all the features of Word. I use the "replace command to rid myself of a lot of the unnecessary information. You can use this process to create several files and use the file insert command within Word to combine files into one larger file over time. Don't forget to delete the e-mails from the outlook folder. I use a text search program (Quick Find) to locate strings of information (text) that I am researching. I have over 30,000 pages of e-mails in documents. Hope this helps. Bob Meador -----Original Message----- From: Sandra E. T. 3. Sandra, I use a very good shareware database called TreePad available for free download at www.treepad.com to manage information I want to keep rather than keeping e-mails. I just highlight the information that is important, copy it and insert it under the proper heading in TreePad. For instance, we've had a lively discussion on backup techniques on another board. One of the suggestions looked like it be perfect for some of my work. Applying it to FO, I copied the e-mail information, went to TreePad, clicked on "Family Origins", then "Backup Strategies", went to the bottom of that page and pasted the information in. Now I have one page to look at for backup ideas or I can sub-divide these into finer segments later if necessary. I usually include the sender's e-mail address and name in case I need to follow up. The benefit for me is I might gleen 3 good ideas out of 200 e-mails. So, how would I find these ideas a year later in a long list of e-mails? Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra E. T. 3. It is necessary to restore the backup file to Outlook in order to read its contents. The procedure for backup and restore can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q270670 It is also possible to save the contents of an e-mail by right clicking on the body of the e-mail, use "Select All" and then copy and paste it into a file. This method will *not* keep the headers. FL Rose ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra E. T. 3. You did not say how you had been saving the e-mail messages. Are they still in your inbox in Outlook Express? Or, do you use the "File", "Save As" to save them as individual messages? I set up a "Message Rule" to move mail when the subject line contains "[FO]" to special FOW folder for email. When you search for it, you will find that it is really one file, rather than a folder with individual files for each message. FOW.DBX seems to reside in "C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{some long number code}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\" along with the inbox, drafts, outbox and any other folders you have for email. You can copy the entire "Outlook Express" folder to the CD, or only the boxes you want. I would suggest copying them to a temporary folder on the hard drive first, where you can rename them, perhaps appending the current date to the folder or filename so that they can be identified later. You can get copies of the archives sent to you as digests, no attachments this way, by sending an email to the following address, subject "archive" and only the lines "get volume02/1", where "02" is the year, and the number after the "/" is the number. number 1 would be the first one for the year and the latest one is about 221. You can order multiple digest as the example below shows, each one comes as a separate email message. The advantage to these is that you can cut and paste several messages at a time to Word or something and save them in a format that you do not need Outlook Express to read. 2. Sandra E. T. Duncan
    3. Well I am a very bad girl, I have mailboxes for [FO] And August already has 114 messages in it. Someone told me to save the whole .dbx file but I tried a test and no matter what format I choose I am unable to read a single thing,I am very envious of anyone who can just delete the whole "SENT" mail box... Instinctively I know there is a way to save this to get the extra stuff out of Outlook Express,I even highlighted 56 messages at once and forwarded them to myself with this subject [FO] Forwarded 56 messages and I can still go to that single message and see whatever one I desire.I have not set up [FO] to go to it's own folder I want to read each and every one a they come in I cannot believe it 62 years old, 32 years genealogy,. 10 years Internet and from [FO] I am still learning the most every day. So if I do a "SAVE AS" will that be a more efficient way to save all desired messages? I am in serious need of help please ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alfred Eller" <[email protected]> To: "Sandra E. T. 3. Something in the back of my mind tells me something about having "cookies enabled" for some of the Rootsweb and Ancestry sites to work. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darold "Doc" M. I think I may have replied directly to them instead of going through this help list. I still cannot access my website. I've also noticed that when I try to access anyone else's website on Rootsweb I get the same message. Went to my sisters house and got my website on here computer with no problem. I am using Windows ME, MSIE 6.0.26.00, my computer is an HP and is less than a year old, I have 256K RAM and a 40 GB HD with 30 GB free. I tried some of the suggestions that were made. Emptied my cache and then typed in the address, still couldn't access it. Tried using the Refresh button along with the shift key. Nothing. I alsowent into Control Panel and tried the add/remove MSIE and checked the Repair Internet Explorer button but nothing happened there. Also updated my family tree in FO and created a new website and uploaded it using WS FTP LE. Still cannot access it. This really has me at a loss. I hope someone can help me. TIA Darold "Doc" M. 3. I was green with envy of all the people who were writing about the advantages of using PDF files. I ordered an upgrade to version 10 last FEBRUARY from S&N and it still hasn't arrived; they claim the manufacturer/publisher hasn't sent the upgrades yet. 3. If your account has been billed I would call the bank and cancel the charge for not providing a product. If your account has not been charged then, put a stop on the check/charge, then go to http://www.formalsoft.com and order the Version 10. Or wait for Rootsmate to come out at the end of the Year. http://rootsmate.com. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!! 3. Alfred asked: "How tightly is the browser integrated with Yahoo? There may be a conflict there. Ditch Yahoo. My daughter has had nothing but trouble being tied to a Yahoo browser; she is not into genealogy so it has nothing to do with what you are doing. 1. [FO] CHANGE OF ADDRESS (Effective Today 8 August 2002)
    2. Clifford S. Fiveash
    3. TO: Relatives, Friends, Business Associates, Members of my Mailing Lists After 9 nine years, I've changed Internet Providers ( It's as bad as Moving!!!!). Worldnet's local server has degraded and they have no immediate plans to offer DSL or Cable service, so I've opted to go with Bellsouth DSL ( It is FAAAASSSSSTTTT !) :) I'm sending this to **everyone** in my Address Book ( 9 years of addresses !), hoping that I haven't missed anyone. Sooooooo........ If we have not been in contact lately, shoot me a line or two back. If we've had "difficulties" in the past, you're still in my address book, so, consider this as an "olive branch" and let me know how you're doing. If you're a member of one of my Mailing Lists, this is a necessary message, so you'll know how to contact me Cheers, Cliff Clifford S. Fiveash Pensacola, Florida [email protected]

    3. Try going to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, select "Internet Options" the "Security" tab and click on the "Default Level" button. Try accessing your pages now. If that doesn't work, go back to the Options, this time check the "Privacy" tab and move the slider to the "Medium" position, then select the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Restore Defaults" button there. How tightly is the browser integrated with Yahoo? There may be a conflict there. Alfred D.
