Something sounds amiss... Make sure you check the Help->About Family Origins to determine which version you are in when performing functions. Sounds like you installed FO10 and left FO9.02 remaining installed. As such, there are two(2) shortcut icons in the program menus (and desktop) that access the different versions in their different directories.. IF you have not never YET chosen File->Restore from within FO 10... then all your databases should still be in FO 9.02 format (not "converted to FO10" as Heather describes) and Once you confirm that you are in FO10 and choose File->Restore, it will convert as Heather explains. But, IF you have already run File->Restore from in FO10 and backed up... the resulting backup .zip files will not restore from within FO9.02. Hope this makes sense? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather Shelton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2002 4:09 PM Subject: Re: [FO] Problem with upgrade from 9.02 to 10 > You don't need to create a GEDCOM to import your database into FO 10. > I just upgraded from v 8 to 10 and was given the warning "The database > you want to open . . . is from an earlier version of Family Origins. Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me with a very recent problem. I am using Family Origins v. 9.02 with Windows 98. In order to share a Family Group Sheet as an email attachment, I had changed my printer setup from my normal default ink jet to an installed Adobe 3.0 PDF Writer. I created the group sheet, viewed it on screen, and clicked on the PRINT button on the menu bar at the top of the screen. I followed all the prompts, created the PDF file, and emailed it as an attachment. I returned to Family Origins & did a little more work. From Lists | Source Manager, I decided to print out a paper copy of a list of individuals who all share a particular source. I created the report, viewed it on screen and clicked on the PRINT button on the menu bar at the top of the screen. When the dialogue box for the Acrobat PDFWriter appeared, I realized that I had not changed the printer set up back to my default ink jet. I canceled the PDFWriter, and the dialogue box associated with it disappeared. The screen view of the report was left on the screen. It was not an active window, nor could I make it active by clicking in the window. No part of Family Origins was responsive. Other programs open at the time were responsive and I closed them all down. After waiting awhile, I hit CTL-ALT-DELETE and ended the session with Family Origins. I re-launched Family Origins and opened my database. My default printer, not the PDFWriter, was active and I proceeded to recreate the Source Manger report. As soon as I clicked through List | Source Manger, I encountered 2 CODEBASE ERROR warning boxes. The first read: Error #: -200 Error #: 83805 File is not a data file database corruption detected C:\ . . .\FIEGENBS.DBF C:\ . . .\FIEGENBS.DBF The 2nd warning read: Error #: -935 Error #: 94001 Null Input Parameter unexpected d4 field When I clicked out of the last warning box, Family Origins shut down. I can open Family Origins, and call up my database. I can navigate through the database in both Tree and Family view. I can create a backup of this corrupted database. I can not: print a Source List report; export a GEDCOM; check File | Information; view/print a family group sheet, etc. Each such operation brings back both the Error warning boxes, with the same error numbers I have listed. I do have some recent backups of my uncorrupted database, and I believe I have not added too much information since the last backup, although what those changes might be, I can not for the life of me recall. Therefore, I would be very happy to get my present database back, uncorrupted. We have enjoyed a long and successful collaboration; I would hate for it to end this way. If anyone has some suggestions for a fix to my problem, I would be very grateful. Thanks is advance, Mark
1. The software (from Adobe, not FOW) for the PDF Printer does not work properly if you cancel a print job to the PDF Writer. Most times it will crash your system. 2. The Codebase error is telling you that your "S" database, the Sources, was corrupted when the system hung. The only real fix is a Restore from backup. Should you encounter the wrong printer selected in the future, continue with the print job, but send the file to a folder using an easy to ID name, then delete it after the fact. The ability of not being able to select the printer at report time has problem for a long time and has been on the wish list. It seems that it was something in the design of the Preview that prevented this change. Maybe with RM later this year it will be fixed. For your restore problem, if it is not current, you may loose some data. Since it is the Source database, you may be able to minimize the impact. Try restoring your backup to another folder, then copy only the "S" file over the top of your existing corrupt file. Start FOW, open the database (if not automatic), then Pack it. It it works, make an immediate Backup just in case. Keep you original Backup separate. I would like to back up my FO information on a 250 Zip drive but the only option I can see is to put the info on floppy disks, is there any way to change this? Thank You Harry Hinkle Lewiston, ID.
Hi list, Recently I added a new source to my list of sources. Have done this lots of times in the past with no problem, but in this time, my finger must have slipped and I now find that in some cases, the new source has replaced one of my old sources. Question: Is there away I can obtain a list of all the facts which have my new source so that I can correct the error? I have v10 Thanks Ralph Jobling

Hello all, I've recently installed the upgrade I received from Family Origins and I'm having a problem. When I tried to open the database through "file" "open database" I get the following message... (a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it) This database was created by a newer version of Family Origins. You need to create a GEDCOM from the newer version to import into this version. I'm confused by the wording of this message. How can I create a GEDCOM from the newer version if I every time I click on it I get this message? What did I do wrong and how do I undo it so I can access my ancestors again? Barbara Wright Slidell, Louisiana [email protected] Support our troops. Remember our Veterans.
You can go to the "Reports" menu, select "Lists" and "Fact usage list." Then you choose the fact you are interested in, "Birth" for instance, then choose "Only those with more than one of this fact" and hit the [OK] button. You will have to do it again for the Death duplicates. Alfred D. For the one source: go to the "Lists" menu, select "Source manager," Find and highlight the source and select print. For all the sources: Go to the"Reports" menu, Select "Lists," then "Source List," click on "Create," choose to "Print Citations" and where you want the report sent to. Alfred D. I had occasion to do some extensive merging. In a lot of cases, I have more than one birth, marriage, death date. I chose not to just delete the less likely as some of the dates are from different sources with slightly different information. For instance, one might have a birth year from a census and another might have a full date from a tombstone. Or another might be from a Bible record. Until I get my sources of information straight, I don't want to do any deleting. Is there a way I can list those individuals who have more than one birth date or death date, etc.? Betty
Another genealogy program includes spouse notes and list of children for the starting person of the Ahnentafel report (ancestors by generation) but I don't use it because several direct ancestors were raised in blended households. The step-siblings and step-parents are often very important people in the family stories. Marriage certificate (second marriage, wife Margaret) for George age 77 turned out to have the names of his parents and identified a mysterious woman in the 1881 census who was not mentioned in the family history collected since 1967. FO 10 Journal can include multiple reports and charts. That is easier than editing RTF files for a database that changes frequently. My FO 10 Journal didn't get far because it started with a GEDCOM and had mixed sizes of source documents in the scrapbooks. If a book report is planned to start frequently with the same person, I like to include information about their other relatives in the individual notes. Gladys T., a distant cousin, lived with the family in (place) while taking her hairdressing course. She was introduced to her future husband by a mutual cousin and became a best friend of Flo (youngest daughter.) For all of you who tried to help me with this problem, Thank you. I hope this helps some of you with the same problem. (FYI, After complaining about not being able to get the "advanced viewer" for the 1930 census, I recently received this message from Ancestry help people.) "Dear Yvonne, Currently the Advanced Image Viewer for the 1930 Census only works correctly in Microsoft Internet Explorer. For full access to the Census Images for 1930, you will need to download this software. You can download it for free at the following web address: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp" Now they tell us! I hope this helps someone else with their frustration level ! Yvonne
I hate to be a drag but I just got this update for Legacy, and I am intrigued because that is what I am trying to do in FOW now from 8509 places to 7498 so far, but occasionally I must stop and do something else as it does get tiresome so then I go to where occupations have been entered as place and am making those right there are also tons of" had 9 or had 12" children so I go in and make those into notes NOT PLACES and remove the reference as a place one by one.!!! This has sure taught me a lesson in importing files NOT TO DO IT BLINDLY!!!! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ * Combining Multiple Locations in Legacy Did you know multiple locations can be combined at once on the Master Location List by highlighting an entire group at the same time? Often, through entering information and by importing records from other people you will end up with two or more variations of the same location, spelled a little bit differently. For example, you might end up with: Pompton Pl., Morris, NJ Pompton Plains, Morris, NJ Pompton Plains, Morris Co., NJ Pompton Plains, Morris, New Jersey Pompton Plains, Morris, New Jersey, USA All of these locations are obviously the same place and should be combined into just one, "good", location name. This is very easy to do in Legacy. What I plan to do in my ancestor books is export to .rtf file in a word processor, then make a separate "book" of two generations for the spouse and cut and paste into the original. That way it will be in the same format as the main book. Amazing what we have to do just because our minds don't work the same way Bruce's does, isn't it?
