    1. [FO] GEDCOM from FTM help
    2. JohnFiala
    3. A person who was supposed to be sending me a little GEDCOM from his FTM software actually sent me a 10.6 MB file named with his name, but with an extension of .FTW He says he "sent me everything he had" and that is the way he "has exported before". (Maybe it's the whole program?) Having never seen FTM I'd like some step by step direction thru the menu in order to tell him what he should do to create a GEDCOM. Thanks. John Fiala

    2. Alfred Eller
    3. Thank you Jeffrey Scism, I am glad that someone has shed a bit of light on this by putting forth a few facts so that the rest of us can rest. I had browsed the BlackSheep web page after the first accusation and I fond nothing that I thought would be offensive to any one, even those who profess stilted moral views. I could find no reason for boycotting the site itself, no matter who's name might have been connected with it at one time or another. Most of the people in the USA profess to be Christians of one denomination or another. As I understand it, one of the basics of the Christian faith is forgiveness. "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." So, in that vein, I hope that you can forgive us for being the vessel used to convey the poison pen notes of someone who, evidently does not want to forgive and forget. Guilt by association is prejudice isn't it? The BlackSheep society has a link, "The Genealogy hall of shame": http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/shame/index.html , which lists the genealogy scams that they have discovered. I am quite sure that there are others that haven't been brought to their attention yet. I think that it is worth a browse when you have a question about a genealogical offer. The main page address is: http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ Now, let us put this thread to rest! Alfred D. 1. Re: [FO] back-up on CD-RW
    2. Frank L. Rose
    3. It is *not* possible to write directly to a CD-RW without using a special procedure called packet writing. The normal method is to copy and burn the desired file(s). Use the following procedure: 1. Send the FO backup to a known location on the hard drive, such as a folder called backup. 2. Open the CD burning application and select this folder or a specific file in the folder. 3. Burn the CD. This procedure does *not* over write any previous backup on the CD. It adds the latest version of the backup to the CD. Therefore there is no advantage to using a CD-RW over using a CD-R with this method. (Unless there is desire to be able to erase the CD and start over.) CD-Rs are less expensive. It should be possible to put several hundred FO backups on one CD-R (or CD-RW). 1. [FO] note spacing and GEDCOM imports
    2. E.Rodier
    3. Some current genealogy programs break GEDCOM lines in the middle of words and some between words. It looks like FO 10 breaks between words when making a GEDCOM, but how does it handle imports of GEDCOMs? Are imported GEDCOMs all treated alike or does FO 10 (or RootsMagic) have different imports according to the genealogy program listed in the third line of the GEDCOM text file? 0 HEAD 1 SOUR FamilyOrigins 2 NAME Family Origins(R) for Windows 2 VERS 6.0 After file transfers from different genealogy programs and GEDCOM utilities, individual notes may have short lines (text not wrapped), broken words, run-together words or run-together paragraphs without the original blank lines between. Spell Checking a whole database may not be practical if there are many unusual words and locations. Source text may have a different spacing from notes or be cut short by a program that allows about one line of text compared to three lines in GEDCOM 5.5 used by most programs. One application is ade by Adaptec, called Direct CD. (it takes about 25 minutes to originally reformat a CD-RW, after that is streated as a Hard-drive (for that formatted CD-RW disc.) 3. Their indexes are not 100%. If you look at their listing, you'll see that NY, NH and IL are not listed as 100% Also, in this and other of their indexes, if you don't find your relative, it does not mean they were not included in the census. I've relatives in a number of census that are in the NARA soundex, but NOT in Ancestry.com's indexs. So use the indexes with caution. John Chapman "THESE are the times that try men's souls.."
