For those of us on Juno, PLEASE DON'T SEND ATTACHMENTS!!! If you want to send an attachment, send it to those who reply that they WANT it. I also agree with the FOWer that said the "NO NOTES" term printing on a group sheet when all you have is sources is unsightly! Too bad there is no way to select EITHER notes or sources or both when printing group sheets (hint hint!) Just my 2 cents -chRISTOpher rumcd@juno.com [home page] http://www.open.org/rumcd [surnames] http://www.open.org/rumcd/surnames.htm [World GenWeb Finland] http://www.open.org/rumcd/genweb/finn.html
..."to administer Christian baptism to..." In the context of the GEDCOM [CHR] it is the phrase given to denote infant baptism. I take no offense by it (being an infant baptized Lutheran Christian) and understand the necessary delineation. The GEDCOM standards say "the religious event (non-LDS) of baptizing and/or naming a child." On the other hand, you can go out of step with the majority of the genealogy public and enter infant baptisms under the GEDCOM [BAPM] which is predominately known as believer baptism, although the standard says " The event of baptism (non-LDS) performed in infancy or later." For my 2 cents, I use CHR because most programs have a default setting of it as a NEAR BIRTH event (great when birth records are missing.) For my Baptist ancestors, I add BAPM to denote a Baptism performed at the so-called "age of accountability" or later. Most of my ancestors that have any kind of baptism information are Lutheran and hence baptized as infants. On FOW, you can go into the edit fact and enter "was baptized" in place of "was christened", keeping the CHR tag so GEDCOM imports will work properly. Sorry for the windy reply, just thought you might want another perspective. If I was on the original GEDCOM committee in 198X, I would be siding with you and would have suggested BAPI for Infant and BAPA for adult and BAPL for LDS, but there has been too much water under the bridge IMHO to make things sufficiently backward compatible :-) Perhaps you view this as a cave-in to Mormons, and if so you'll have to make the appropriate decision for your conscience. They are the main reason we have genealogy software and the GEDCOM standard, that although isn't perfect, is better than genealogy datafile chaos! -chRISTOpher rumcd@open.org - rumcd@juno.com [home page] http://www.open.org/rumcd [surnames] http://www.open.org/rumcd/surnames.htm [World GenWeb Finland] http://www.open.org/rumcd/genweb/finn.html

I'm pushing DNA also. I made a DNA.PDF from FOrigins which has just my DNA, by showing all my known ancestors. This DNS.PDF, when sent to anyone hitting me cousin wise, will let them check all my known surnames at a glance and saves many hours of emailing back and forth. Hope this catches on. It works. Let's push this. Let's face it, the list of autosomal DNA for all of us grows at a rate faster than we can keep up with it. Dozens a month and growing. Also perhaps someone in this software operation can help everyone by making special autosomal DNA matching software. In a few years genealogy is going pure autosomal DNA. First comes numbers for surnames then the names. Get swabbed and get your genealogy all at the same time. However, for sure, many bad paper trails are slowing down this fast coming operation. A tip which works. Check to see which names you have more than once. You will find your DNA autosomal type will read closer kin, cousin wise, further back in time for this family group. Study this one. Ken On 08/04/2015 08:22 PM, dnawrocik wrote:

I wish. My wife has used Roots Magic for years and it is broken into as well. After looking more into this, I am concerned both Roots Magic and Family Origins have serious security flaws. Some study shows someone uses the update function to alter the DLLS, for sure, and perhaps other parts of both packages as well. Do note the original DLL dates and see if they have been entered into. Said another way, delete the package and reinstall it while looking at the dates on the DLLS you took out. A few of those dates seem to soon change, most don't. Someone is getting into them. Another is the inclusion of DB files, now found, but not in the original of either Roots Magic or Family Origins. In other words the extensions are changing as well. We must find a way to stop doing some one's genealogy work for them. For surely some one is using our genealogy efforts to line their pockets. Hello Jim, I have recently been receiving your emails, I presume because sometime ago I put up a question on the FO Forum. I haven't received an answer pertaining to my problem exactly, but I'm hoping you may be able to offer a solution to my problems. A quick story - about 12 months ago I suffered a major computer crash and although I had backed up my FO data on a separate hard drive, once Windows was reinstalled (V7) I was unable to access my FO data. I had been researching for many years and using Version 4 ( still have the original disc), and, I am ashamed to say, had not updated or even known that FO was no longer supported as such, but had become Rootsmagic. I was devastated after all my time, effort and money to realise that I would probably never be able to recover my data. If there is anyone who is able to offer me the slightest glimmer of hope to solve my problem they would have my eternal gratitude. With fingers crossed......cheers Coral Callaway On 8/08/2015 4:17 AM, Jim Fisher via wrote: > I assume you are talking people about taking data from your FO-generated web > site, hosted by them, rather than from the data on your computer. I assume you are talking people about taking data from your FO-generated web site, hosted by them, rather than from the data on your computer. Anyone can easily copy data from a web site like that, and some idiots seems to think that by doing so they are researching their own family history. There is no way to stop that, other than by not having the data on-line with free viewing for anyone who cares to look (which is the case with most non-commercial web sites). I wouldn't worry about it. It's discourteous, but it's their loss, because they are missing out on all the extra information you could give them if they approached you properly. For what it's worth, since others have mentioned it, I'm still using FO10 simply because it does more or less what I want. I may upgrade to RootsMagic some time, and I've been a member of that support group since it started, but I see no reason to hurry. I take the same approach with computer hardware and software as I do with cars, washing machines or anything else - just keep using it as long as it does what I want. I don't see that a new version of something being issued is a reason to upgrade, whatever it is. After FO I switched to Rootsmagic which was the one they recommended and it is very user friendly. Others cannot change my program. -----Original Message----- From: dnawrocik via <family-origins-users@rootsweb.com> To: ken <ken.biscoe@yahoo.com>; family-origins-users <family-origins-users@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tue, Aug 4, 2015 9:23 pm Subject: Re: [FO] Hi all, I never knew anyone who could do that. You can also save the file on the old computer as a GEDCOM to a floppy disk (I assume you have a way to access a floppy disk on the new computer since you mentioned that is what the FO4 backup is on). Then import that GEDCOM into RM on the new computer. - Bruce On Sun, May 25, 2014 at 5:17 PM, <chambers1378@comcast.net> wrote: > The old computer with Family Origins on it is too old to run an internet > browser and is not connected to the internet. > George > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "RootsMagic" <rootsmagic@gmail.com> > To: family-origins-users@rootsweb.com > Sent: Saturday, May 24, 2014 10:46:42 PM > Subject: Re: [FO] Letting go of Family Origins, Migrating to Mac? > > If the original FO is working on the old computer, run that copy of FO and > save your file to a GEDCOM.
