Jane, Connie and Mike: Thank you all of you for getting back to me. When there were no replies I assumed it was because of the holiday weekend and that I probably would not hear until Tuesday so I was quite touched to have all your kind words today. Thank you Connie for your very kind words. I have stopped panicking now and been working on this since then. You are correct about coming back to it and having forgotten things - it happens to us all. Thank you Jane - I will aim to post in the forum in future - I keep forgetting it. Finally thank you Mike for all your advice, I did actually copy my project as I saw advice somewhere to do that to protect the original in case one messed up. I have been working on the tutorials this afternoon but yesterday with the aid of the tutorial I ended up being successful inputting one of my own families marriages. Today when I did not use the tutorial instructions I was less successful so I have 2 A4 pages of summarised notes on 'how to do it' so I will try again tomorrow but will also keep on with the tutorials as that is definitely the way ahead. Regarding the date issue - when I could not correct it - I think I had done something wrong but as I am unsure what it was that I did wrong, neither you nor Jane would be able to replicate it. I am a bit short on time to do the task I am on at present and hoped to skive the tutorials - a false economy and a lesson learned. Thank you all very much. ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Beryl and Mike Tate Sent: 04 May 2014 11:38 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FHU] Very Newbie AS Query Anne, As Jane says, it is better to post in the FHUG AS Forum. But here are a few quick pointers. It is advisable to work through all the AS tutorials in the FHUG KB. The textual tutorials give more details than the animations. They let you experiment on the Sample Project without risking your own project. The AS initial settings are just to ensure the tutorials work in a consistent way, and only need setting once, but since you have just installed AS those setting would have applied anyway. For your Project you would be advised to understand all the AS options and templates to ensure they are tailored to your way of working. I am not sure what you mean by "Then I copied my 'own family project'". Starting from FH, you open your Project and run the AS Data Entry Plugin. No copying is involved, as AS works directly on your Project GEDCOM file. "3 Feb 1904" is a valid GEDCOM date - no need to change to February. The only way I can get Invalid Date is if I enter the letter O instead of zero 0 in 19O4. I am using the Knowledge base, searching the forum, using the AS help etc 1. I set up the initial settings per the animated tutorial on UTube for using the Sample project and it successfully loaded in AS with the names in the RH Column. Then I copied my 'own family project' and set it as the default. Am I correct in thinking that I don't have to repeat the whole procedure of initial settings again? 2. I started trying to put in a marriage and put in the date of marriage as "3 Feb 1904" per the knowledge base and tabbed through it then realized I should have put in "February" in full and tried deleting it out and tabbing through again and then re-entering it as '3 February 1904' to be advised 'invalid date' - I can see it is in the Vital Records section as 'Feb' and that is probably why it is being rejected. How do I get out of this? And if I don't need to get out of it - How does one correct silly errors? I can't believe I am the only one making these errors or have I not set it up properly? To be honest I feel embarrassed to be asking this. ---------------------- Best wishes, Anne ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
