John, this is due to a change in FH V6 to support UNICODE characters. The Gedcom file is now encoded in UTF-16 format. The bad news is that many other products do not support UTF-16. The good news is that the "Export Gedcom File" Plugin offers many options to cater for such things and minimise loss of data due the different Gedcom dialects used by different products. There is much more information on this topic in the FHUG web site.
