Duncan, you are discussing All Relatives Diagrams. Yes, what you describe is a deficiency of those Diagrams, and has been discussed before. A workaround is to insert separate trees for those missing relationships. In the FHUG Wish List there is a request for an Entire Pool Diagram that includes everyone however related, and you can vote for it.
